Impact of global climate change on the health,welfare and productivity of intensively housed livestock

Major scientific studies have shown that global warming(i.***.increasing average temperature of the Earth)is now a reality.The aims of this paper are to broadly review the underlining causes of global warming,the general effects of global warming on social and environmental systems and the specific effects of resulting from global warming phenomena severe fluctuations in weather patterns,particularly heat waves on livestock health,welfare and productivity.Finally this article aims to summarise some common sense climate control methods and more importantly to highlight the required future research and development(R&D)work that is necessary to achieve a new level of building environment control capability,and thus ensure that the intensive livestock industries will be able to cope with the changed external climate.With the increasing temperatures on a global scale,the most direct effect of the high temperature on the animals is heat stress,which has been proven to have a variety of negative effects on animal health,welfare and productivity.Different potential measures could be taken in future to alleviate the increased heat stress.Some of these measures are mere adaptations or improvements of current engineering solutions.However,facing the complex challenges of global warming and particularly resulting from it the rapid increase of the number of consecutive days with significantly higher than average temperatures will probably require novel solutions,including new designs based on solid engineering judgment,development of new engineering standards and codes to guide designs,the exploration of new and superior building materials,the need for better energy management,and the development of substantially more“intelligent”control systems that will balance changing exterior disturbances,interior building loads and demands to the biological needs of the occupants of the structures.

Health Behavior Changes among Maternity Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Maternity nurses are frontline health professionals in the COVID-19 pandemic who may confront life-altering challenges. Studies that evaluated the impact of COVID-19 on maternity nurses’ daily lifestyles are limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the changes in health-enhancing behaviors, such as eating habits and lifestyle behaviors, during the COVID-19 pandemic among nurses working in a maternity hospital. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that surveyed maternity nurses working in a major government maternity hospital in Kuwait. Data were collected between January and February 2021. Results: A total of 336 participants completed the questionnaire. Normal weight was perceived by 88 (26.2%) of the participants, while 56 (16.7%) had a Body Mass Index indicating obesity. Weight gain during the pandemic was reported by 128 (38.1%) participants and 91 (27.1%) of the sample gained one to three kilograms. The findings showed low adherence to the Mediterranean diet 5.3 ± 2.5 points. Sleep hours decreased significantly during the crisis, with 113 (33.6%) of participants sleeping 7 to 9 hours during the COVID-19 situation compared to 136 (40.5%) before the pandemic (p Conclusion: Maternity nurses revealed low adherence with the healthy diet, with almost a third of participants having self-reported weight gain. Further, the sleeping patterns and the practicing of physical activities were negatively affected by COVID-19 pandemic.

AIM： To assess if the included vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） polymorphisms rs3025035, rs3025021 and rs2010963 are associated to proliferative retinopathy in a Mexican population with type 2 diabetes mellitus （T2DM）. METHODS： A case-control study was conducted in adult individuals with T2DM associated to proliferative retinopathy or non-proliferative retinopathy from Oct. 2014 to Jun. 2015 from the Retina Department of the Asociation to Prevent Blindness in Mexico. The selected patients were adults with a diagnosis of T2DM ≥5y. All subjects had a comprehensive ocular examination and the classification of the retinopathy severity was made considering the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study （ETDRS） standardization protocols. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole fresh blood. All samples were genotyped by qPCR for selected VEGF polymorphisms. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was calculated by comparing Chi-square values between the expected and the observed values for genotype counts.RESULTS： In total 142 individuals were enrolled, 71 individuals with T2DM and associated proliferative retinopathy and 71 individuals with non-proliferative retinopathy. One-sided Fisher’s exact test was performed for rs3025021 [OR （95% CI）=0.44（0.08-2.2）; P=0.25] and rs2010963 [OR （95% CI）=0.63（0.25-1.6）; P=0.23]. The minor allelic frequencies obtained were 26% for rs3025021, 10% for rs3025035 and 61% for rs2010963. The pairwise linkage disequilibrium between the three SNP was assessed, and was as follows： rs3025021 vs rs3025035： D’=1.0, r2=0.1043, P≤0.0001; rs3025021 vs rs2010963： D’=0.442, r2=0.0446, P=0.149; rs3025035 vs rs2010963： D’=0.505, r2=0.0214, P=0.142.CONCLUSION： This is the first analysis involving VEGF polymorphisms and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in a Mexican population. A major finding of the present study is that none of the polymorphisms studied was significantly associated with proliferative retinopathy.
