Back pain is a common condition with a high social impact and represents a global health *** disc disease(IVDD)is one of the major causes of back pain;no therapeutics are currently available to reverse this *** impact of bone mineral density(BMD)on IVDD has been controversial,with some studies suggesting osteoporosis as causative for IVDD and others suggesting it as protective for *** studies to evaluate the influence of genetic components of BMD in IVDD could highlight opportunities for drug development and *** taking a holistic 3D approach,we established an aging zebrafish model for spontaneous *** BMD in aging,detected by automated computational analysis,is caused by bone deformities at the ***,aged zebrafish spines showed changes in bone morphology,microstructure,mineral heterogeneity,and increased fragility that resembled *** of the discs recapitulated IVDD symptoms found in humans:the intervertebral ligament(equivalent to the annulus fibrosus)showed disorganized collagen fibers and herniation,while the disc center(nucleus pulposus equivalent)showed dehydration and cellular *** manipulated BMD in young zebrafish by mutating sp7 and cathepsin K,leading to low and high BMD,***,we detected IVDD in both groups,demonstrating that low BMD does not protect against IVDD,and we found a strong correlation between high BMD and *** learning was applied to high-resolution synchrotron\iCJ image data to analyze osteocyte 3D lacunar distribution and morphology,revealing a role of sp7 in controlling the osteocyte lacunar 3D *** findings suggest potential avenues through which bone quality can be targeted to identify beneficial therapeutics for IVDD.

Pseudopemphigoid can cause a chronic cicatricial conjunctivitis that is clinically identical to the manifestations seen in mucous membrane pemphigoid, a disorder with a common clinical phenotype and multiple autoimmune links. For the purpose of this review, we will describe pseudopemphigoid as caused by topical drugs, the most common etiology with ocular manifestations, and as caused by the pemphigus disease, a more rare etiology. Specifically, we will discuss the ophthalmological features of drug-induced cicatricial conjunctivitis, pemphigus vulgaris, and paraneoplastic pemphigus. Other etiologies of pseudopemphigoid exist that will not be described in this review including autoimmune or inflammatory conditions such as lichen planus, sarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis(Wegener's granulomatosis), erythema multiforme(minor, major, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome), bullous pemphigoid, skin-dominated linear IgA bullous dermatosis, and skin-dominated epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. Prompt diagnosis of the underlying etiology in pseudopemphigoid is paramount to the patient's outcome as certain diseases are associated with a more severe clinical course, increased ocular involvement, and differential response to treatment. A completehistory and ocular examination may find early cicatricial changes in the conjunctiva that are important to note and evaluate to avoid progression to more severe disease manifestations. When such cicatricial changes are noted, proper diagnostic techniques are needed to help elucidate a diagnosis. lastly, collaboration between ophthalmologists and subspecialists such as dermatologists, pathologists, immunologists, and others involved in the care of the patient is needed to ensure optimal management of disease.

Supplementation of different fat sources affects growth performance and carcass composition of finishing pigs

Background: There are various fat sources with different energy values and fatty acid compositions that may affect growth performance and carcass composition of grow-finishing pigs. A higher net energy was recently reported in choice white grease compared with soybean oil. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to determine whether practical responses confirm that difference between choice white grease and soybean oil, and to extend the observations to other fat ***: In Exp. 1, pigs fed fats had lower(P ly feed intake in phase II and overall period,greater(P ll period than pigs fed the control diet. Pigs fed fats tended(P = 0.057) to have thicker backfat depth at the last rib than those fed control. Pigs fed 6% fats had greater(P ll period than pigs fed 3% fats. During phase I, pigs fed choice white grease grew faster(P l. In Exp. 2, pigs fed dietary fats(soybean oil, choice white grease, animal-vegetable blend, palm oil, or tallow) had greater(P ll period, greater(P ly gain in phase I, but lower(P ly feed intake in phase II an overall than pigs fed the control diets. The choice white grease also increased(P ly gain during phase I compared with soybean oil. Pigs fed palm oil had thicker(P l, animal-vegetable blend, or ***: Inclusion of 6% dietary fat improved feed efficiency of finishing pigs, while different fats produced different practical results that may be consistent with their different energy values. Results from the early stage indicate that dietary fats with relatively more saturated fatty acids may provide greater energy than those with relatively more unsaturated fatty acids for growing pigs.

Controlling cooperativity of a metastable open system coupled weakly to a noisy environment

The notion of cooperativity comprises a specific characteristic of a multipartite system concerning its ability to demonstrate a sigmoidal-type response of varying sensitivities to input stimuli in transitions between states under controlled *** a statistical physics viewpoint,in this work we attempt to describe the cooperativity by the stability of a metastable open system with respect to *** treat the evolution of a system weakly coupled to the environment in a kinetic framework,we consider two fluctuating energy levels of different dimensionalities,initial population of one level,reversible transitions of population between the levels,and irreversible depopulation of another *** average is made over level fluctuations and environment vibrations so that an inter-level transition rate can be obtained accounting for the influences of external control on level position and *** is found that the cooperativity of the two-level system is bounded approximately between 0.736 and unity,with the lower bound indicating worsening system stability.

Can the growing of transgenic maize threaten protected lepidoptera in Europe?

We evaluated whether protected European butterflies can potentially be at risk if transgenic maize is extensively grown in Central *** explored potential consequences of both insect resistant(IR)and herbicide resistant(HR)transgenic *** maize can produce pollen that is toxic to lepidopteran larvae,and this puts butterfly species at possible risk if the presence of young larvae coincides with maize flowering,during which large quantities of maize pollen can be deposited on *** considering the timing of maize flowering in Europe and the phenology of the protected lepidoptera species,we found that 31 species had at least one generation where 50%of the larval stage overlapped with maize flowering,and 69 species for which first instar larvae were present during maize pollen *** maize allows high concentration herbicide treatments on fields without seasonal limitation,which can drastically reduce weed *** cases where such weed species are host plants for protected butterflies,reduced host plant/food availability can result,causing population *** using published information,we first identified the important weed species in major maize-growing European ***,we checked whether the host plants of protected lepidoptera included species that are common maize *** identified 140 protected species having food plants that are common weeds in one or more of the major European maize-growing *** HR maize is grown in Europe,there is a potential hazard that their food plants will seriously decline,causing a subsequent decline of these protected species.

Active video games in fully immersive virtual reality elicit moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and improve cognitive performance in sedentary college students

Background:Active video games are a new method for increasing physical activity(PA).Fully immersive virtual reality(VR)is a hardware device on which an active video game can ***(video games in)VR(AVR),might increase immersion,game engagement,and moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA),thereby yielding greater exercise-related benefits,e.g.,cognitive ***:We examined the induction of MVPA via an AVR and a sedentary VR(SVR)as well as the effects of VR play on cognitive performance,which was monitored using 2 different *** of 29 sedentary college students attended three 20-min laboratory sessions(AVR,SVR,or control)in a randomized order;during the control session,they sat quietly doing nothing.A fully immersive headset was used for the 2 video game *** monitored and computed participants’PA using hip-wom accelerometers(wGT3 x-bt;ActiGraph,Pensacola,Fl,USA)and a heart rate band(Polar H7;Polar,Kempele,Finland).After each session,the participants completed a mnemonic similarity test(MST)to measure recognition *** also filled out a motion sickness questionnaire and an abbreviated game experience ***:The AVR session induced a significantly greater heart rate and more time spent in MVPA than did either of the other 2 sessions regardless of the PA monitoring *** elicited greater game experience questionnaire-assessed sensory and imaginative immersion,challenge,and positive affect than did *** mnemonic similarity test recognition score was marginally higher post-AVR session than it was post-SVR ***:AVR elicited MVPA without a significant increase in motion sickness and induced a better game experience and better borderline cognitive performance than did SVR.

Vortex model of plane turbulent air flows in channels

We present a theoretical model of plane turbulent flows based on the previously proposed equations, which take into account both the longitudinal motion and the vortex tube rotation. Using the simple model of eddy viscosity, we obtain the analytical expressions for the mean velocity profiles of stationary turbulent flows. In particular,we consider the near-wall flow over a flat plate in a wind tunnel as well as Couette and Poiseuille flows in rectangular channels. In all these cases, the calculated velocity profiles are in good agreement with experimental data and results of direct numerical simulations.
