Knowledge and Practice of Menstrual Health and Hygiene among Young People in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

b.ckground: The periodic shedding of the lining of a woman’s uterus is referred to as Menstruation, or a menstrual period. Over a period of three to five days, the uterine lining b.eaks down into a b.oody sub.tance. It then passes down through the cervix and exits through the vagina. Menstrual health knowledge is regarded as having knowledge of what menstruation is and the need for effective management of health during menstruation and proper menstrual hygiene management. This study seeks to assess the knowledge and practice of menstrual health and hygiene and availab.lity of resources for effective menstrual hygiene management among young people in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Methodology: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out among 169 young males and females of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Theological Seminary, Jos, North, Plateau State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used in this study and data was collected using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire. Data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0. Findings: Majority of 70 (41.4%) respondents fall within the age range of 20 - 24 years old, 64 (37.9%) were within 25 - 29 years. There were more females (96, 56.8%) than males (73, 43.2%). Twenty (11.8%) were married, 149 (88.2%) were single. More than three quarters (78.1%) had good knowledge of Menstrual Hygiene. Of this, 64.4% are males and 88.5% are females. 18.3% of respondents had fair knowledge. Of this, 30.1% are males and 9 (9.4%) are females. 6 (3.6%) of respondent’s had poor knowledge of menstrual hygiene (4 (5.5%) of males and 2 (92.1%)) of females). Two-thirds of the female respondents had good practice of menstrual hygiene, while a third of the respondents had the poor practice of menstrual hygiene. Optical resonators are a powerful platform to control the spontaneous emission dynamics of excitons in solidstate nanostructures. We study a MoSe2-WSe2heterostructure that is integrated in a cryogenic open optical microcavity to gain insights into fundamental optical properties of the emergent interlayer excitons. First, we utilize a low-quality-factor planar open cavity and investigate the modification of the excitonic lifetime as on-and offresonance conditions are met with consecutive longitudinal modes.

Utilization of low quality water of mountain reservoirs: a case study from Al Jab.l Al Akhdar, Oman

Al Jab.l al Akhdar(Green Mountain) in arid northern Oman has freshwater resources that had supported small communities for hundreds of years. Jab.l Akhdar receives more rainfall(300-400 mm) when compared to the desert plains. In the last few years, this region had undergone enormous changes due to rapid development. The resident and transient populations have increased and their activities exert severe stress on the water resources. There are 24 retention reservoirs in the area, b.t most are eutrophic and the nutrient loading is due to input of animal fecal matter via surface run-off. As expected, these waters contaminated with coliform b.cteria and some have pathogenic Escherichia coli. Drinking water needs of all the villages met b. groundwater extraction. b.cause of poor quality, the surface water in the reservoirs is under-utilized. A low-cost lowmaintenance treatment system designed, constructed and operated in one village to clean the reservoir water for non-drinking human use. The treatment unit improved the water quality parameters. A survey among the adult male population of the village showed their eagerness to adopt this system and use the treated reservoir water for uses other than agriculture. Estab.ishment of these treatment units in other villages should reduce the pressures on groundwater extraction.

Measuring health care efficiency with a tripartite configuration under the ＂National＂ Health Insurance system

b.ckground The ＂National＂ Health Insurance （NHI） in Taiwan, China is a single-payer system that was introduced in 1995 to provide universal health care. It is worth noting that three stakeholders are involved in Taiwan＇s NHI, which can b. seen as a triangular governance regime b.tween the b.reau of ＂National＂ Health Insurance （b.HI）, the insured and providers. Accordingly, this study intended to assess the efficiency of various different production processes that occur among these stakeholders in Taiwan＇s NHI system. Methods A two-stage relational Data Envelopment Analysis （DEA） model is adopted to investigate the sub.process efficiencies of the health care resources held b. 23 cities and counties through stages I or II, where the outputs of the first stage serve the inputs of the second. The dataset was collected from the annual reports pub.ished b. the Department of Health, Taiwan, China. Results Under the proposed framework, the efficiency of the whole process can b. ob.ained from the product of productivity and allocative efficiency. Ten DMUs are efficient either in stages I or II, with only two DMUs b.ing efficient with regard to b.th sub.processes. Conclusion The relational DEA model not only demonstrates the physical relationship b.tween the whole process and the sub.process components, b.t also produces reliab.e outcomes in efficiency measurement among different stakeholders in Taiwan＇s NHI system.

Data mining of hospital characteristics in online pub.ication of medical quality information

Information disclosure can reduce information asymmetry b.tween health care providers and patients, thus improving b.th patient safety and medical quality. The National b.reau of Health Insurance (Nb.I) inTaiwancurrently pub.ishes health-related information online in order to enhance service efficiency and enab.e the pub.ic to monitor the country’s medical system. A data mining technique, classification and regression tree (CART), is used in this work to investigate online pub.ic quality information to compare the characteristics of hospital. The hospital quality indicators and characteristics data are availab.e on the web.ites of the Nb.I (http://***/AmountInfoWeb.***) and the Department of Health (http://***/). The full classification and regression tree presented in this work, grown using the hospitals’ quality medical indicators and characteristic values, classifies all hospitals into seven groups. The rate of stays longer than 30 days, which is the dependent variab.e in this study, is most influenced b. the numb.r of medical staff. This reflects the fact that the fewer medical staffs that are employed, the smaller the hospital is, and patients who are likely to have longer stays tend to go to the medium or large hospitals. Policy makers should work to decrease or eliminate persistent healthcare disparities among different socioeconomic groups and offer more online healthrelated services to reduce information asymmetry b.tween health care providers and patients.

Investigation of Silver Nanostructures and Their Influence on the Fluorescence Spectrum of Erb.um-Doped Glasses

Sodium b.rate glasses emb.dded with silver were made b. the melt quenching technique. Glass transition temperature was recorded b. thermal analysis of the sample. As made glasses revealed emission in the visib.e region under nitrogen laser and excimer laser excitations. Heat treatment was used to induce silver metallic particles. Ab.orption spectra revealed a peak at 417 nm due to surface Plasmon resonance. Particle size was estimated to b. 2.6 ± 0.2 nm. Erb.um and silver co-doped multielement oxide glasses were made b. the melt quenching technique followed b. heat treatment to induce nanoparticles. In heat treated samples, Er3+ luminescence increased 4× due to enhanced field in the vicinity of silver particles. Under excimer laser excitation, Er3+ and 2% Ag co-doped glass revealed Er3+ transitions due to enhanced field at the rare-earth ions. Under 795 nm laser excitation Er3+ green upconversion signals are found to b. 4× stronger in 2% Ag co-doped, heat treated sample, than the others.
