BACKGROuND Whole-tumor apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)histogram analysis is relevant to predicting the neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy(nCRT)response in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer(LARC).AIM To evaluate the performance of ADC histogram-derived parameters for predicting the outcomes of patients with *** This is a single-center,retrospective study,which included 48 patients with *** patients underwent a pre-treatment magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)scan for primary tumor staging and a second restaging MRI for response *** sample was distributed as follows:18 responder patients(R)and 30 non-responders(non-R).Eight parameters derived from the whole-lesion histogram analysis(ADCmean,skewness,kurtosis,and ADC10^(th),25^(th),50^(th),75^(th),90^(th) percentiles),as well as the ADCmean from the hot spot region of interest(ROI),were calculated for each patient before and after *** all data were compared between R and non-R using the Mann-Whitney u *** measures of diagnostic accuracy were applied:the receiver operating characteristic curve and the diagnostic odds ratio(DOR).We also reported intra-and interobserver variability by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC).RESuLTS Post-nCRT kurtosis,as well as post-nCRT skewness,were significantly lower in R than in non-R(both Pund that,after treatment,R had a larger loss of both kurtosis and skewness than non-R(Δ%kurtosis and Δ skewness,Pups were post-nCRT ADC10^(th),Δ%ADC10^(th),Δ%ADCmean,and ROIΔ%***,the best diagnostic performance was achieved byΔ%kurtosis at a threshold of 11.85%(Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve[AuC]=0.991,DOR=376),followed by post-nCRT kurtosis=0.78×10^(-3)mm^(2)/s(AuC=0.985,DOR=375.3),Δskewness=0.16(AuC=0.885,DOR=192.2)and post-nCRT skewness=1.59×10^(-3)mm^(2)/s(AuC=0.815,DOR=168.6).Finally,intraclass corr

Azithromycin(AZM),the most commonly prescribed antibiotic in the united States,is thought to have no activity against multidrugresistant Gram-negative pathogens such as Achromobacter xylosoxidans(AX)per standard minimum inhibitory concentration testing in cation-adjusted Mueller Hinton *** we provide the first report of AZM bactericidal activity against carbapenemresistant isolates of AX,with a multifold decrease in minimum inhibitory concentration across 12 clinical isolates when examined under physiologic testing conditions that better recapitulate the in vivo human *** pharmaceutical activity,evident in eukaryotic tissue culture media,is associated with enhanced AZM intracellular penetration and synergistic killing with human whole blood,serum,and ***,AZM monotherapy inhibited preformed AX biofilm growth in a dose-dependent manner together with a reduction in viable *** an illustrative case,AZM in combination with piperacillin-tazobactam exerted clear therapeutic effects in a patient with carbapenem-resistant AX mediastinitis,sternal osteomyelitis,and aortic graft *** study reinforces how current antimicrobial testing practices fail to recapitulate the host environment or host-pathogen interactions and may misleadingly declare complete resistance to useful agents,adversely affecting patient *** conclude that AZM merits further exploration in the treatment of drug-resistant AX *** approaches to antimicrobial susceptibility testing that better recapitulate the host environment should be considered,especially as infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial pathogens are expanding globally with high morbidity and mortality.

Background:The characterization of surface and canopy fuel loadings in fire-prone pine ecosystems is critical for understanding fire behavior and anticipating the most harmful ecological effects of ***,the joint consideration of both overstory and understory strata in burn severity assessments is often *** aim of this work was to assess the role of total,overstory and understory pre-fire aboveground biomass(AGB),estimated by means of airborne Light Detection and Ranging(LiDAR)and Landsat data,as drivers of burn severity in a megafire occurred in a pine ecosystem dominated by Pinus pinaster *** the western Mediterranean ***:Total and overstory AGB were more accurately estimated(R^(2) equal to 0.72 and 0.68,respectively)from LiDAR and spectral data than understory AGB(R^(2)=0.26).Density and height percentile LiDAR metrics for several strata were found to be important predictors of *** severity responded markedly and non-linearly to total(R^(2)=0.60)and overstory(R ^(2)=0.53)AGB,whereas the relationship with understory AGB was weaker(R ^(2)=0.21).Nevertheless,the overstory plus understory AGB contribution led to the highest ability to predict burn severity(RMSE=122.46 in dNBR scale),instead of the joint consideration as total AGB(RMSE=158.41).Conclusions:This study novelty evaluated the potential of pre-fire AGB,as a vegetation biophysical property derived from LiDAR,spectral and field plot inventory data,for predicting burn severity,separating the contri-bution of the fuel loads in the understory and overstory strata in Pinus pinaster *** evidenced relationships between burn severity and pre-fire AGB distribution in Pinus pinaster stands would allow the implementation of threshold criteria to support decision making in fuel treatments designed to minimize crown fire hazard.

Screening Outcomes of Hepatitis B and E among HIV Patients on HAART in Osogbo, South Western Nigeria

Background: The lives of patients living with HIV/AIDs have improved in terms of longer life expectancy and quality. This has seen the emergence of complications of the disease and the drugs such as metabolic syndrome and re-emergence of tuberculosis. Co-infection with other viruses especially the hepatic viruses has also become a major source of concern. The aim of this research is to determine the incidence of hepatitis B and E among this group of patients. Methods and Findings: Blood samples were collected from 156 consecutive HIV positive patients on HAART, informed consent having been obtained previously. The patients were screened both for hepatitis B and E using standard procedures. A questionnaire was administered to all participants. The results are illustrated with tables following analysis with SPSS version 10. It was found that 24.5% were positive for hepatitis E while 7.8% were positive for hepatitis B. It was also found that educational status was the only statistical significant variable for HEV co-infection. Taking the value of alanine transaminase to be 12 u/L as upper limit of normal, the mean value for HEV positive patients obtained was 13.8u/L while for those HBV positive was 10u/L. Conclusion: From the findings, more emphasis should be placed on improving education of the populace. More research should be carried out to determine what subtypes of the viruses are present and their effects on the hepatic system using preferably non-invasive techniques. Also the variability of hepatic enzymatic activity needs more analysis.

The central region of the Neoarchaean Belomorian Mobile Belt (BMB) is, except for the Solovetsky Archipelago, largely covered by the White Sea. A newly discovered granitic gneiss outcrop on Solovetsky Island, Russia, enables a first age determination of the archipelago and evaluation of the hitherto poorly constrained central BMB. Zircons separated from the orthogneiss were analysed with SIMS-SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS techniques. Both techniques yield a concordant u-Pb age of ca. 2.430 Ga, coinciding with ages of granitic intrusions in the BMB ca. 50 km west of the Solovetsky Islands.

First molecular identification of multiple tick‑borne pathogens in livestock within Kassena‑Nankana,Ghana

The risk of pathogen transmission continues to increase significantly in the presence of tick vectors due to the trade of livestock across *** Ghana,there is a lack of data on the incidence of tick-borne pathogens that are of zoonotic and veterinary *** study,therefore,aimed to determine the prevalence of such pathogens in livestock using molecular approaches.A total of 276 dry blood spots were collected from cattle(100),sheep(95)and goats(81)in the Kassena-Nankana *** samples were analyzed using Polymerase Chain Reaction(qPCR)and conventional assays and Sanger sequencing that targeted pathogens including Rickettsia,Coxiella,Babesia,Theileria,Ehrlichia and *** overall prevalence of 36.96%was recorded from the livestock DBS,with mixed infections seen in 7.97%***,the prevalence of infections in livestock was recorded to be 19.21%in sheep,14.13%in cattle,and 3.62%in *** pathogens identified were Rickettsia spp.(3.26%),Babesia ***(8.70%),Theileria orientalis(2.17%),Theileria parva(0.36%),Anaplasma capra(18.48%),Anaplasma phagocytophilum(1.81%),Anaplasma marginale(3.26%)and Anaplasma ovis(7.25%).This study reports the first molecular identification of the above-mentioned pathogens in livestock in Ghana and highlights the use of dry blood spots in resource-limited *** addition,this research provides an update on tick-borne pathogens in Ghana,suggesting risks to livestock production and human *** studies will be essential to establish the distribution and epidemiology of these pathogens in Ghana.

藓类植物作为缺乏维管组织的非等水植物,其光合作用和耗水量主要受到光照、温度和水分供应状况的影响;这些环境条件随昼夜交替改变,是否使得藓类植物形成了类似维管植物的内在昼夜节律调节机制,目前还所知甚少;理解其节律响应特点对于藓类植物的保育与利用具有重要意义。该研究对脆枝青藓(Brachythecium thraustum)、大灰藓(Hypnum plumaeforme)和长叶提灯藓(Mnium lycopodioides)进行12 h/12 h的昼夜光周期驯化后进行24 h/0 h的持续光照处理,分别测定3种藓类在12 h/12 h和24 h/0 h光周期条件下的净光合速率(Pn)和蒸腾速率(Tr),结果表明:排除光照和叶-气水汽压差(VPD)等环境影响之后,3种藓类的这两个指标均观察到明显的节律变化,节律调节作用能够解释其Pn和Tr日变化的23.4%和30.2%;且维管植物中少见的Tr节律作用出现在所有受试的藓类植物上;Pn和Tr的节律响应存在明显的种间差异,该研究中节律性最强的物种为脆枝青藓。以脆枝青藓为例进一步分析其全光照下非结构性碳水化合物(NSC)的节律响应时序转录组,结果表明:35.1%的淀粉、糖类合成代谢相关基因的表达具有节律性,且与NSC含量的昼夜节律变化相关;脱落酸信号和气孔调节相关基因的表达变化与Tr的节律调节相关;光合电子传递和暗反应相关蛋白的转录水平变化与光合作用节律保持一致。藓类植物虽然丢失了生物钟核心反馈环CCA1/LHY基因,但是核心生物钟功能集中于PRRs家族,通过级联调节使得光合作用生物学过程和保卫细胞水分/离子运输过程等相关基因表达呈现显著的节律性,最终导致固碳耗水的节律响应高度保守。

Association between IGF-2 gene and fat-free mass in response to resistance training

BACKGROuND: It is well established that the human aging process is associated with a significant decline in neuromuscular function and performance. Twin studies demonstrate that genetic factors partially explain the inter-individual variation of fat-free mass (FFM) and muscle strength. PuRPOSE: To examine the association between the polymorphism of the gene IGF-2 with phenotypes strength and muscle mass of elderly women pre and post resistance training. METHODS: 76 elderly women participated in this analysis. These volunteers, who should be sedentary for at least 6 months before the study, were assigned four groups in relation to allele GAGG, AA, GAAA and GG. The first analysis compared 60 elderly women with GG and GA allele (GAGG) versus 16 elderly women with AA allele. The second analysis compared 54 elderly women with GA and AA (GAAA) versus 22 elderly women GG allele. The Body mass index, fat free mass, fat mass and Isokinetic Muscle Peak Torque were measured. All volunteers were participating in the Resistance Training program. The DNA was extracted from peripheral venous blood leukocytes using a salting out protocol. The primer for IGF-II gene exon 9 was 5’-GTCCCTGAACCAGCAAAGAG-3’ 0.5 μM (0.625 μl) Primer R-5’-TGATGGAAAAGGGAGTGAGG-3’ 0.5 μM (0.625 μl), Taq DNA Polimerase enzime 0.5 u (0.1 μl), água milli-Q (3.8 μl) 5 hg de DNA (3 μl). PCR amplification was performed in a programmable thermal cycler GeneAmp? PCR System 9700. RESuLTS: The results of the first analysis GAGG × AA versus the group AA showed the relative increase in knee extensor peak torque relative and also in the fat-free mass and showed a decrease in the fat mass percentage in the GAGG group. The second analysis considered the group GAAA versus group GG showed decreases in the fat-free mass percentage in the GAAA group, also showed the relative increase in the fat-free mass in the GG group and decrease in the fat mass percentage in the GG group.
