Landscape genetics reveals inbreeding and genetic bottlenecks in the extremely rare short-globose cacti Mammillaria pectinifera (Cactaceae) as a result of habitat fragmentation

Mammillaria pectinifera is an endemic, short-globose cactus species, included in the IUCN list as a threatened species with only 18 remaining populations in the Tehuacfin-Cuicatlan Valley in central Mexico. We evaluated the population genetic diversity and structure, connectivity, recent bottlenecks and population size, using nuclear microsatellites. M. pectinifera showed high genetic diversity but some evidence of heterozygote deficiency （F15）, recent bottlenecks in some populations and reductions in population size. Also, we found low population genetic differentiation and high values of connectivity for M. pectinifera, as the result of historical events of gene flow through pollen and seed dispersal. M. pectinifera occurs in sites with some degree of disturbance leading to the isolation of its populations and decreasing the levels of gene flow among them. Excessive deforestation also changes the original vegetation damaging the natural habitats. This species will become extinct if it is not properly preserved. Furthermore, this species has some ecological features that make them more vulnerable to disturbance such as a very low growth rates and long life cycles. We suggest in situ conservation to prevent the decrease of population sizes and loss of genetic diversity in the natural protected areas such as the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Biosphere Reserve. In addition, a long-term ex situ conservation program is need to construct seed banks, and optimize seed germination and plant establishment protocols that restore disturbed habitats. Furthermore, creating a supply of living plants for trade is critical to avoid further extraction of plants from nature.

Throughout its lifetime,high-voltage circuit breaker(HVCB)contacts suffer from inevitable degradation processes,especially during the formation of electric *** degraded contacts can reduce the current interruption capacity and increase the chances of operational faults,which might lead to considerable financial ***,the use of efficient evaluating techniques is a key factor to achieve systems *** dynamic resistance measurement(DRM)is a technique that can be used to evaluate the degradation level of HVCB'*** stands out from the usual technique,static resistance measurement,by allowing the assessment of both the main contacts and the arcing contacts(ACs).Usually,the mean resistance or the area under the DRM curve is used to estimate the AC ***,DRM is a non-standardised technique and there are no specified parameters to evaluate the real wear ***,an analysis of alternative parameters extractible from the DRM technique is presented in this study,such as amplitude and variance of the DRM *** results attest the possible use of more than one parameter for the continuous evaluation of HVCB ACs,characterising the DRM as a more complete and precise diagnosis tool.

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

Information Theory and Data-Mining Techniques for Network Traffic Profiling for Intrusion Detection

In this paper, information theory and data mining techniques to extract knowledge of network traffic behavior for packet-level and flow-level are proposed, which can be applied for traffic profiling in intrusion detection systems. The empirical analysis of our profiles through the rate of remaining features at the packet-level, as well as the three-dimensional spaces of entropy at the flow-level, provide a fast detection of intrusions caused by port scanning and worm attacks.

Growth, Yield and Fruit Quality of Tahiti Lime on Eight Standard Rootstocks Affected by Soil Depth

Two Tahiti lime （Citrus latifolia Tan.） experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of eight standard rootstocks on two different soil locations at Tecoman Colima, Mexico. Rootstocks were selected by their tolerance to Citrus tristeza virus （CTV） and acceptable adaptation to semi-add hot tropics environment. The first trial was planted in ＂Cerrito de Aguilar＂（CA） location which had sandy-loam soil with a fluctuant water table at 100 cm depth. The second experiment was planted in ＂Crucero Tecoman＂（CT） on a sandy deep soil with no water table restriction. At CT location the best Tahiti lime growth, yield and fruit quality were observed on Alemow rootstock. The same combination at CA showed a poor performance and was affected by diseases due to high moisture conditions by the superficial water table. Taiwanica, Swingle citrumelo and Rangpur lime rootstocks were less productive than Alemow, but showed a good adaptation and acceptable yield on both soil conditions. Among them, Swingle citrumelo was a promising rootstock because it showed standard tree growth, good yield and excellent fruit quality. Swingle citrumelo also showed an acceptable performance on soil with high presence ofPhytophthora sp. and moderate levels of calcium carbonate （near to 3,500 ppm）. Taiwanica and Rangpur lime performed well during the six years of the experiment, but trees began to be affected by root diseases. Better performance of most Tahiti lime/rootstocks were found on sandy depth soil than on superficial wet soils.

Tertiary peritonitis: A disease that should not be ignored

Intra-abdominal infections can be classified into uncomplicated or complicated(peritonitis). Peritonitis is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary. Tertiaryperitonitis is the less common but the most severe among peritonitisstratifications, being defined as a recurrent intra-abdominal infection that occurs48 h after a well-succeeded control of a secondary peritonitis. This disease has acomplex pathogenesis that is closely related to the capacity of the peritonealcavity to activate immunological processes. Patients who progress to persistentperitonitis are at an increased risk of developing several infectious complicationssuch as sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome. Moreover, tertiary peritonitisremains an important cause of hospital death mainly among patients withassociated risk factors. The microbiological profile of organisms causing tertiaryperitonitis is often different from that observed in other types of peritonitis. Inaddition, there is a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens causing thiscondition, and an appropriate and successful clinical management depends on anearly diagnosis, which can be made easier with the use of clinical scorespresenting a good prediction value during the intensive care unit ***, immediate therapy should be performed to control theinfectious focus and to prevent new recurrences. In this sense, the treatment isbased on initial antimicrobial therapy and well-performed peritoneal drainage.

AIM: To determine the presence of Helicobacter species DNA in the liver of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with and without cirrhosis as compared to controls, and to identify the bacterial species involved. METHODS: Seventy-nine consecutive patients (HBV and HIV negative) with a liver sample obtained after liver biopsy or hepatic resection were studied: 41 with CHC without cirrhosis, 12 with CHC and cirrhosis, and 26 controls (HCV negative). Polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) targeting Helicobacter 16S rDNA and species- specific were performed on DNA extracted from the liver. A gastric infection with H pylori was determined by serology and confirmed by 13C-urea breath test. RESULTS: Overall, Helicobacter 16S rDNA was found in 16 patients (20.2%). Although positive cases tended to be higher in CHC patients with cirrhosis (41.6%) than in those without cirrhosis (17.0%) or in controls (15.4%), the difference was not statistically significant (P =0.08). H pylori-like DNA was identified in 12 cases and H. pullorum DNA in 2, while 2 cases remained unidenti- fied. Gastric infection with H pylori was found in only 2 of these patients. CONCLUSION: Our results do not confirm the associ- ation of Helicobacter species DNA in the liver of CHC patients with advanced liver disease. The lack of correlation between positive H pylori serology and the presence of H pylori-like DNA in the liver may indicate the presence of a variant of this species.
