Objective:To determine and compare the fecundity of Clarias gariepinus(***)fed with Unical aqua feed and Coppens feeds in concrete tanks,including the nature of relationship that exist between fecundity and morphometric indices of fish such as total length and total ***:An experiment was conducted for 6 months in the fish farm of University of Calabar with two triplicate groups of 50 *** *** experimental fish weighing(0.50±0.02)kg were stocked in concrete tanks(circular)of 16.63 m^(2)*** tanks were labelled A_(1),A_(2),A_(3),B(1),B(2)and B(3).Fish in tank A_(1),A_(2)and A_(3)were fed with Coppens feed and fish in tanks B(1),B(2)and B(3)were fed with Unical aqua *** was done twice daily(9:00 and 16:00)at 3%of their body ***:Mean fecundity of *** fed with Unical aqua feed(68366.67±15966.29)eggs varied significantly(P0.05)than *** fed with Unical aqua feed(50.37%±1.29%).Water quality parameters including ammonia(mg/L),pH,water temperature(°C)and dissolved oxygen(mg/L)fell within the recommended range for the culture of fresh water ***:Fecundity of *** reared in concrete tank was significantly influenced by the experimental ***,on the bases of affordability and availability to farmers,Unical aqua feed is more economical and is recommended as a cost-effective cultivation of female *** broodstock.

A twelve week experiment was conducted to compare the effects of diets with plant-based and animal-based ingredients on growth and gonad development of Clarias gariepinus. One hundred and 12 sub-adult C. gariepinus with an average weight of 205 ×5.09 g, were stocked in six concrete tanks （9 × 4 × 2 m3） containing 20 fish each. Experiment had 3 replicates and animals fed daily at 5% body weights. There was no significant difference （P 〈 0.05） in proximate compositions of the two experimental feeds and controls. Fecundity, gonad weight and gonasomatic index were higher in fish fed diet 13 than A and C. Similarly, growth indices were higher in fish fed diet B than in A and C. Histology of gonads showed a faster development of oocytes of eggs in fish fed animal-based ingredients than plant-based and combined plant and animal diets. Although there were slight differences in growth parameters and gonad development in favor of feed with animal-based ingredients, plant-based feed compared favorably in the growth and gonad development of C. gariepinus. Plant-based ingredients are recommended on the basis of affordability and availability as substitute for animal-based ingredients in C. gariepinus feed.

Objective:To assess the pollution status of Calabar River in relation to the levels of heavy metal in the tissue of the African catfish[Clarias gariepinus(***)].Methods:A total of 45 samples of *** were purchased from fishermen on landing at Nsidung beach along Calabar River within three months(15 samples monthly)from June to August,*** samples were then put into a cold box containing ice blocks immediately after buying from the *** fish samples were transported immediately to the Chemistry Laboratory,University of Calabar for digestion and heavy metal *** of the muscle,gills and liver were removed from the fresh samples and oven dried at temperature of 120°C to constant weight and digested using standard *** digested tissue portions were analyzed for lead,iron,manganese,cobalt,chromium and cadmium concentrations using atomic absorption ***:Mercury was not detected at all in the muscle,liver and gills of *** mean±SD of metals in liver of *** were:(0.080±0.014),(0.110±0.014),(6.480±1.279)and(0.295±0.021)mg/kg for Cd,Cr,Fe and Mn,*** the gills,heavy metals values were:(0.065±0.021),(0.115±0.035),(5.843±0.558),and(0.345±0.007)mg/kg for Cd,Cr,Fe and Mn,*** the muscles,heavy metals values were(0.045±0.021),(0.115±0.353),(5.150±1.075),and(0.187±0.045)mg/kg for Cd,Cr,Fe and Mn,*** general trend of metals accumulation in tissues of *** showed a decreasing trend of Fe>Mn>Cr>***,the metal accumulation in the three tissues showed a decreasing trend of liver>gills>***:The metal concentrations in the muscle,gills and liver of *** were all below the World Health Organization acceptable range,and as such fishery resources from Calabar River are safe for consumption.

Objective:To investigate some important aspects of the biology of Callinectes amnicola(***)such as fecundity,carapace length-weight relationship,condition factor and carapace length frequency distribution from the Cross River estuary,***:A total of one hundred and twenty ovigerous females of ***,freshly caught with basket traps,lift net trap,and gill net were collected from the catches of the artisanal fisheries in the study area between June 2012 and May ***,carapace length-weight relationship,condition factor and carapace length frequency distribution were determined and analyzed following standard ***:Fecundity(F)ranged between 73090 eggs for crab of carapace length 8.1 cm and total weight 34 g and 809450 eggs for crab of carapace length 16.1 cm and total weight 395 g with a mean of 311808.93±17693.94 *** was a positive significant relationship between fecundity and carapace length,total weight and condition factor as follows:F=6839.7CL^(1.4403)(r^(2)=0.2145,P<0.05),F=15302TW^(0.5798)(r^(2)=0.4079,P<0.05),F=147255K^(0.2788)(r=0.2717,r^(2)=0.0738,P<0.05).A significant linear relationship between carapace length and weight of *** is given by the equation:Log W=2.0447LogL–0.1389(r^(2)=0.3357,P<0.05).The crab exhibited a negative allometric growth pattern(b=2.0447).Condition factor ranged between 21.48 to 104.95 with a mean value of 47.21±*** carapace length frequency distribution showed a unimodal class size ***:Findings of this study is crucial in assessing the population dynamics and development of management strategies of the the Blue crab,*** from the estuary such as mesh size regulation,fishing season and fishing ground regulation in the Cross River ***,findings of this study will be useful in evaluation of the aquaculture potential of the Blue crab ***,which is a valuable shell fish for the inhabitants estuary.

Objective:To determine the prevalence,mean intensity,and abundance of monogenean parasites in Clarias gariepinus(***)from two selected fish farms in Calabar,Cross River State,***:Eighty specimens of *** from the two farms(40 each)were necropsied for parasitological ***,gill and fin biopsies were prepared from each specimen following standard methods for microscopic *** indices including dominance(D),prevalence,mean intensity and abundance were calculated according to standard *** were analyzed using the Fisher's exact ***:*** from the two farms were infested with a total of ninety individuals of monogenean parasites belonging to three species including Macrogyrodactylus clarii(***),Gyrodactylus *** Dactylogyrus sp.D index showed that the three monogenean species were eudominant(D-value>10%).Gyrodactylus *** more abundant(46)followed by Dactylogyrus sp.(23)while *** was the lowest(21).Prevalence,meaning intensity and abundance of monogenean parasites in the two farms,varied insignificantly higher(P>0.05).Prevalence in both farms were higher in female *** than that in *** parasites exhibited organ specificity as *** and Dactylogyrus *** recovered from the gills while Gyrodactylus *** the skin and ***:High abundance of these parasites may lead to poor growth performance and high mortality in ***,leading to huge monetary loss and low profit margin by increasing production cost due to the cost of treatments.

Cysticercosis is a frequent parasitic infection of the nervous system that occurs when humans become intermediate hosts of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium (T. solium), after ingesting its eggs. The disease is usually transmitted person-to-person, from Taenia carriers to healthy individuals, through non-hygienic handling of food or by direct contact with human feces. Ingestion of undercooked pork contaminated with cysticerci as the cause of human cysticercosis is a common misconception, since the role of pigs is to maintain the infection cycle by causing human taeniasis.

The balance between cell proliferation and cell growth characterizes tissue homeostasis on one side and cell death on the other side. Fas receptor-mediated apoptosis is a control mechanism for tissue homeostasis, and avoiding this death pathway predisposes to many human diseases, including cancer. Current therapies for this disease are invasive and do not have the desired effect in the control of the disease. In this context, the search for new drugs that contribute to a better treatment is gaining more relevance. 4-tert-butyl-bis-(2,6-thiomorpholin-4-ylmethyl)-1-phenol (LQM319) [1,2] is a drug currently in preclinical stage, and we have shown that it has a hypertensive effect, similar to captopril, in a hypertensive rat model. Different studies have shown that some chemicals that are used as antihypertensive agents have an antineoplastic effect against certain types of cancer, as is the case of hydralazine [3], and captopril [4], among others [5]. On the other hand, it has been reported that morpholine derivatives may activate Fas (CD95)-mediated apoptosis. The aim of the present study was to show the interaction between CD95 (receptor) and thiomorpholine derivatives (ligand) using molecular modeling and docking studies, and to elucidate the possible action mechanism of 4-tert-butyl-bis-(2,6-thiomorpholin-4-ylmethyl)-1-phenol.
