Larvicidal efficacy of plant extracts and isolated compounds from Annonaceae and piperaceae against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus

The Aedes(Ae.)aegypti and Ae.albopictus mosquitoes are vectors of epidemiologically relevant arboviruses in the public health context,such as the dengue,Zika and chikungunya viruses.Among the alternatives to synthetic insecticides for the control of these vectors,the use of natural plant products deserves attention.This review summarizes findings on the larvicidal potential of plant extracts on Ae.aegypti and Ae.albopictus,as well as the potential of isolated compounds from plants of the Annonaceae and piperaceae families against these vectors.Descriptors related to larvicidal activity of plant extracts and isolated compounds in Aedes spp.in the Web of Science database were used,for plant extracts considering publications between 2000 and 2019.A total of 859 articles were analyzed for plant extracts and estimates of lethal concentration values(LC50 and LC90).In the end,95 articles that presented the larvicidal potential of 150 plant species from 52 families were analyzed.The two families most studied for this activity were Fabaceae and Asterace Aedes.The plant families with the best LC50 values against mosquitoes were piperaceae and Annonaceae.Larvicidal activity of 50 acetogenins has already been identified on Ae.aegypti,and 29 of them presented LC50 below 10μg/mL,as well as the larvicidal activity of 8 compounds isolated from piperaceae.Therefore,plants of these two families are promising for the development of commercial botanical larvicides in the form of extracts and isolated substances,as well as the production via organic synthesis of the most active compounds.

ENSO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niña.However,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is limited.Therefore,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern Amazonia.Evaluations occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)years.Twelve permanent plots were used to sample litter.ENSO effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niño.However,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were found.There was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind speed.Although the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and altered.The conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia biodiversity.The need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

A Rare presentation of Erdheim-Chester Disease Overlaped with Langerhans Histiocytosis

Erdheim-Chester Disease (ECD) is a rare condition and has various differential diagnoses with other forms of histiocytosis, classified as one of non-Langerhans histiocytosis. The diagnosis of this condition remains challenging because its presentation includes non-specific systemic manifestations that can affect different organs caused by deposition of lipids and fibrosis. Most common include bone pain followed by progressive weakness and different lung manifestations. This case is about a rare presentation of ECD with Langerhans Histiocytosis as overlap syndrome, with findings of both diseases in a middle aged woman that presented dyspnea as the first symptom. The patient was treated initially as heart failure and remained without any improvement, being admitted to investigate. After a stricted follow-up, bone and lung involvement were noticed and a skin biopsy unveiled xanthomatized macrophages accompanied by Touton giant cells. This condition remains an important clinical entity and should provide new insights for clinicians dealing with respiratory diseases.

Effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines against rotavirus infection and hospitalization in Latin America: systematic review and metaanalysis

Background:Rotavirus was the leading cause of childhood diarrhoea-related hospitalisations and death before the introduction of rotavirus vaccines.Methods:We describe the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines to prevent rotavirus infections and hospitalizations and the main rotavirus strains circulating before and after vaccine introduction through a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between 1990 and 2014.203 studies were included to estimate the proportion of infections due to rotavirus and 10 to assess the impact of the vaccines.41 of 46 studies in the post-vaccination period were used for meta-analysis of genotypes,20 to calculate VE against infection,eight for VE against hospitalisation and seven for VE against severe rotavirus-diarrhoea.Results:24.3%(95%CI 22.1–26.5)and 16.1%(95%CI 13.2–19.3)of cases of diarrhoea were due to rotavirus before and after vaccine introduction,respectively.The most prevalent G types after vaccine introduction were G2(51.6%,95%CI 38–65),G9(14.5%,95%CI 7–23)and G1(14.2%,95%CI 7–23);while the most prevalent p types were p[4](54.1%,95%CI 41–67)and p[8](33%,95%CI 22–46).G2p[4]was the most frequent genotype combination after vaccine introduction.Effectiveness was 53%(95%CI 46–60)against infection,73%(95%CI,66–78)against hospitalisation and 74%(95%CI,68.0–78.0)against severe diarrhoea.Reductions in hospitalisations and mortality due to diarrhoea were observed in countries that adopted universal rotavirus vaccination.Conclusions:Rotavirus vaccines are effective in preventing rotavirus-diarrhoea in children in Latin America.The vaccines were associated with changes in genotype distribution.

Carotid body tumour （CBT） is a rare neoplasm arising from para^an^lion cells of the carotid body.1 Sureical resection of the CBT is considered the primary treatment option, and the only one which can allow a definitive cure.^1-3 The resection is particularly difficult because the tumour is adherent to the carotid adventitia, is highly vascularized, often involves the cranial nerves, and is in a limited field for exposure, consequently, the intervention is associated with high morbidity due to risk of nervous injuries, stroke, was well as hemorrhage shock.^1-3

Interleukin-1 and TNF-α polymorphisms and Helicobacter pylori in a Brazilian Amazon population

AIM:To study the association between Interleukin-1(IL-1)and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αpolymorphisms,infection by Helicobacter pylori(H pylori)and the development of gastrointestinal diseases.METHODS:Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of 177 patients with various gastrointestinal diseases and from 100 healthy volunteers.The polymorphisms in IL-1βand TNF-αgenes were analyzed using the polymerase chain reactionrestriction fragment length polymorphism method(pCRRFLp)and those from IL-1RN with pCR.The presence of infection due to H pylori and the presence of the CagA toxin were detected by serology.The histopathological parameters in the gastric biopsies of the patients were according to the Sydney classification.RESULTS:A comparison of the frequencies of the different polymorphisms studied among the patients and the control group demonstrated that the allele IL1RN*2 was more frequent among patients with gastric ulcers and adenocarcinoma.Carriers of the allele ILRN*2 and those with reactive serology for anti-CagA IgG had a greater risk of developing peptic ulcer and gastric adenocarcinoma,as well as a higher degree of inflammation and neutrophilic activity in the gastric mucosa.CONCLUSION:Our results indicate a positive association between IL-1RN gene polymorphism and infection by positive H pylori CagA strains and the development of gastric ulcers and adenocarcinoma.

Columnar joints in the patino Formation sandstones, Eastern paraguay： a dynamic interaction between dyke intrusion, quartz dissolution and cooling-induced fractures

The patiño Formation sandstones, which crop out in Areguá neighborhood in Eastern paraguay and show columnar joints near the contact zone with a nephelinite dyke, have as their main characteristics the high proportion of syntaxial quartz overgrowth and a porosity originated from different processes, initially by dissolution and later by partial filling and fracturing. Features like the presence of floating grains in the syntaxial cement, the transitional interpenetrative contact between the silica-rich cement and grains as well as the intense fracture porosity are strong indications that the cement has been formed by dissolution and reprecipitation of quartz from the framework under the effect of thermal expansion followed by rapid contraction. The increase of the silica-rich cement towards the dyke in association with the orthogonal disposition of the columns relative to dyke walls are indicative that the igneous body may represent the main heat source for the interstitial aqueous solutions previously existing in the sediments. At macroscopic scale, the increasing of internal tensions in the sandstones is responsible for the nucleation of polygons, leading to the individualization of prisms, which are interconnected by a system of joints, formed firstly on isotherm surfaces of low temperature and later on successive adjacent planes towards the dyke heat source.

The accumulation of anthocyanins is a well-known response to abiotic stresses in many plant species.However,the effects of anthocyanin accumulation on light absorbance and photosynthesis are unknown.Here,we addressed this question using a promoter replacement line of tomato constitutively expressing a MYB transcription factor(ANTHOCYANIN1,ANT1)that leads to anthocyanin accumulation.ANT1-overexpressing plants displayed traits associated with shade avoidance response:thinner leaves,lower seed germination rate,suppressed side branching,increased chlorophyll concentration,and lower photosynthesis rates than the wild type.Anthocyanin-rich leaves exhibited higher absorbance of light in the blue and red ends of the spectrum,while higher anthocyanin content in leaves provided photoprotection to high irradiance.Analyses of gene expression and primary metabolites content showed that anthocyanin accumulation produces a reconfiguration of transcriptional and metabolic networks that is consistent with,but not identical to those described for the shade avoidance response.Our results provide novel insights about howanthocyanins accumulation affects the trade-off between photoprotection and growth.

Water Quality of Aroeira River for Use in Irrigation of Vegetable Crops in the Northern Region of the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical, chemical and microbiological quality of the water of the Aroeira River in the city of S?o Mateus, northern region of Espírito Santo State, Brazil, from April 2012 to March 2013, for use in irrigation of vegetable crops. Five points were selected along the river for analysis of pH, chloride (mg/L Cl-), total hardness (mg/L CaCO3), dissolved oxygen (mg/L O2), ammoniacal nitrogen (mg/L N-NH3), total iron (mg/L Fe), phosphate/orthophosphate (mg/L pO4 3-), turbidity (NTU), acidity (mg/L CO2), temperature (°C), electrical conductivity (dS/m), as well as microbiological and parasitological analyses. Only point 1, located upstream of the points of domestic sewage discharges, is the closest to be considered suitable for use in irrigation of vegetable crop, demonstrating the possible risks to the health of populations who use water with sewage discharges in urban communities for irrigation of vegetable crops.
