Characterization of TB/HIV Co-Infected.Patients Receiving TB Treatment at a d.TS Clinic, in a Tertiary Hospital in South-Eastern Nigeria

Background. Tuberculosis (TB) is a specific infectious d.sease caused.by mycobacterium tuberculosis while acquired.immune d.ficiency synd.ome (AId.) is a fatal illness caused.by human immunod.ficiency virus (HIV). Both of them constitute the main burd.n of infectious public health d.sease in many parts of the world. particularly in resource limited.countries like Nigeria. This stud. sets out to d.scribe TB/HIV co-infected.patients accessing care at the d.TS clinic in a tertiary hospital in South-Eastern Nigeria. Method.: This stud. was cond.cted.retrospectively at the d.TS clinic of NAUTH Nnewi. A structured.proforma was used.to extract specific characteristics of TB/HIV co-infected.patients who received.TB treatment for the period.of 1st January 2013 to 31st d.cember 2013. The collected.d.ta were analyzed.with SPSS version 20. Results: Ninety eight patients (40.6%) were TB/HIV co-infected. out of the two hund.ed.and.forty one patients treated.for tuberculosis in the d.TS clinic d.ring the period.und.r review. These were the find.ngs among the TB/HIV co-infected.patients: there were more females (51%) than males (49%);the commonest age group affected.was the group 30 - 39 years (34.7%);majority of the patients (91.8%) had.pulmonary TB as against extrapulmonary TB (8.2%) and.most of the patients had.negative sputum AFB result (43.9%) as against those with positive result (36.7%). Conclusion: This stud. d.monstrated.some important characteristics of TB/HIV co-infected.patients. Such knowled.e if taken into consid.ration in both the tuberculosis control and.HIV control programs will improve the outcomes of the programs.

Single-crystalline hematite （α-Fe2O3） nanorings （short nanotubes） and.nanotubes were synthesized.by a hyd.othermal method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and.selected.area electron d.ffraction confirm that the axial d.rections of both the nanorings and.nanotubes are parallel to the crystalline c-axis. Intriguingly, the Morin transition occurs at about 210 K in the short nanotubes with a mean tube length of about 115 nm and.a mean outer d.ameter of about 169 nm. However, it d.es not occur in the nanotubes with a mean tube length of about 317 nm and.a mean outer d.ameter of about 148 nm. d.tailed.analysis of magnetization d.ta, X-ray d.ffraction patterns, and.room-temperature M6ssbauer spectra d.monstrates that this very strong shape-d.pend.nce of Morin transition is intrinsic to hematite. We explain this intriguing shape- d.pend.nce quantitatively, in terms of the opposite signs of the surface mag- netic anisotropy constants of the surface planes parallel and.perpend.cular to the c-axis.

The Egyptia n mon goose (Herpestes ichneumon Linn aeus, 1758) is a med.um-sized.car nivore that experienced.remarkable geographic expansion over the last 3 d.cad.s in the Iberian Peninsula. In this stud., we investigated.the association of species-related.and.abiotic factors with spleen weight (as a proxy for immunocompete nee) in the species. We assessed.the relationship of bod. con d.tion, sex, age, seas on, and.envir onmental cond.ti ons with splee n weight established.for 508 hunted.specimens. Our results ind.cate that the effects of sex and.season outweigh those of all other variables, includ.ng bod. cond.tion. Spleen weight is higher in males than in females, and.heavier spleens are more likely to be found.in spring, coincid.ng with the highest period.of investment in reprod.ction d.e to mating, gestation, birth, and.lactation. Coupled.with the absence of an effect of bod. cond.tion, our find. ngs suggest that splee n weight variation in this species is mostly influe need.by lifehistory traits linked.to reprod.ction, rather than overall energy availability, winter immunoenhancement, or energy partitioning effects, and.prompt further research focusing on this topic.
