Positive intercropping effects on biomass production are species-specific and involve rhizosphere enzyme activities: Evidence from a field study

Less attention has been given to soil enzymes that contribute to beneficial rhizosphere interactions in intercropping ***,we performed a field experiment by growing faba bean,lupine,and maize in mono and mixed cultures in a moderately fertile *** measured shoot biomass and the kinetic parameters(maximal velocity(V max)and michaelis-constant(K m))of three key enzymes in the rhizosphere:Leucine-aminopeptidase(LAP),β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase(NAG),and phosphomonoesterase(PHO).Faba bean benefitted in mixed cultures by greater shoot biomass production with both maize and lupine compared to its expected biomass in ***,LAP and NAG kinetic parameters were less responsive to mono and mixed cultures across the crop *** contrast,both the V max and K m values of PHO increased in the faba bean rhizosphere when grown in mixed cultures with maize and lupine.A positive relative interaction index for shoot P and N uptake for faba bean showed its net facilitative interactions in the mixed ***,these results suggest that over-productivity in intercropping is crop-specific and the positive intercropping effects could be modulated by P *** argue that the enzyme activities involved in nutrient cycling should be incorporated in further research.

Outdoor fresh air ventilation plays a significant role in reducing airborne transmission of diseases in indoor *** classrooms are considerably challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the increasing need for in-person education,untimely and incompleted vaccinations,high occupancy density,and uncertain ventilation *** schools started to use CO_(2)meters to indicate air quality,but how to interpret the data remains *** uncertainties are also involved,including manual readings,student numbers and schedules,uncertain CO_(2)generation rates,and variable indoor and ambient *** study proposed a Bayesian inference approach with sensitivity analysis to understand CO_(2)readings in four primary schools by identifying uncertainties and calibrating key *** outdoor ventilation rate,CO_(2)generation rate,and occupancy level were identified as the top sensitive parameters for indoor CO_(2)*** occupancy schedule becomes critical when the CO_(2)data are limited,whereas a 15-min measurement interval could capture dynamic CO_(2)profiles well even without the occupancy *** CO_(2)recording should be avoided because it failed to capture peak values and overestimated the ventilation *** the four primary school rooms,the calibrated ventilation rate with a 95%confidence level for fall condition is 1.96±0.31 ACH for Room#1(165 m^(3)and 20 occupancies)with mechanical ventilation,and for the rest of the naturally ventilated rooms,it is 0.40±0.08 ACH for Room#2(236 m^(3)and 21 occupancies),0.30±0.04 or 0.79±0.06 ACH depending on occupancy schedules for Room#3(236 m^(3)and 19 occupancies),0.40±0.32,0.48±0.37,0.72±0.39 ACH for Room#4(231 m^(3)and 8–9 occupancies)for three consecutive days.

The present work explores the application of La_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.95)Nb_(0.05)O_(3-δ)(LSCNO)perovskite as electrode material for the symmetric solid oxide fuel *** solid oxide fuel cells of thin-film LSCNO electrodes were prepared to study the oxygen reduction reaction at intermediate *** Rietveld refinement of syn-thesized material shows a hexagonal structure with the R-3c space group of the prepared perovskite *** parameter and fractional coordinates were utilized to calculate the oxygen ion diffusion coefficient for molecular dynamic *** 973 K,the oxygen ion diffusion of LSCNO was 1.407×10^(-8)cm^(2)s^(-1) higher by order of one magnitude than that of the La_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.95)Nb_(0.05)O_(3-δ)(7.751×10^(-9)cm^(2)^(-1)).The results suggest that the Nb doping provide the structural stability which improves oxygen anion *** enhanced structural stability was analysed by the thermal expansion coefficient calculated experimentally and from molecular dynamics ***,the density functional theory calculation revealed the role of Nb dopant for oxygen vacancy formation energy at Sr-0 and La-O planes is lower than the undoped *** understand the rate-limiting process for sluggish oxygen diffusion kinetics,80 nm and 40 nm thin films were fabricated using radio frequency magnetron sputtering on gadolinium doped ceria electrolyte *** impedance was observed to increase with an increasing thickness,suggesting the bulk diffusion as a rate-limiting step for oxygen ion *** electrochemical performance was analysed for the thin-flm symmetric solid oxide fuel cell,which achieved a peak power density of 390 mW cm^(-2) at 1.02 V in the presence of H_(2) fuel on the anode side and air on the cathode side.

Improved reversed phase liquid chromatographic method with pulsed electrochemical detection for tobramycin in bulk and pharmaceutical formulation

Tobramycin is one of the aminoglycoside antibiotics that lack a UV absorbing chromophore. However, the application of pulsed electrochemical detection （PED） has been used successfully for the analysis of this and similar antibiotics. This work describes an improved liquid chromatographic （LC） method combined with PED, which is able to separate much more impurities than before. Using a Discovery C-18 RP column （250 mm × 4.6 mm i.d., 5 μm）, isocratic elution was carried out with a mobile phase, containing sodium sulfate （35 g/L）, sodium octanesulphonic acid （1 g/L）, tetrahydrofuran （14mL/L） and 0.2 m phosphate buffer pH 3.0 （50 mL/L）. Using these experimental conditions, the limit of quantification （LOQ, S/N= 10） was 5 ng. The linearity was examined in the range LOQ-60 μg/mL and the coefficient of determination was 0.998. The method also proved to be repeatable and the recovery was close to 100%. The influence of the different chromatographic parameters on the separation was investigated by means of an experimental design. The proposed method is useful in quality control of tobramycin drug substances and drug products.

Dear Editor, Host chaperone proteinsarecritical factors in plant virus infec- tion. One ofthe most commonly identified host factors involved in plant virus infection is Hsp70, which functions in ATP hydroly- sis, protein folding, assembly of protein complexes, and translo- cation between cellular compartments. A comparative study of plant virus infection, including Potato virus X （PVX）, reported that Hsp70 is up-regulated by virus infection and possibly con- tributes to pathogenesis in both Arabidopsis and N. benthami- ana plants （Aparicio et al., 2005）. Cytosolic Hsp70 interacts with the tombusvirus and tymovirus replication complexes （Wang et al., 2009）, the potyvirus coat protein （Hafren et al., 2010）, and closteroviruses encode an HSP70 homolog that functions to enable virus intercellular transport （Agranovsky et al., 1998）.

Role of bacterial and genetic factors in gastric cancer in Costa Rica

AIm: To evaluate several risk factors for gastric cancer (GC) in Costa Rican regions with contrasting GC incidence rate (GCIR). mETHODS: According to GCIR, 191 Helicobacter pylori (H pylori)-positive patients were classified into groups A (high GCIR, n = 101) and B (low GCIR, n = 90). Human DNA obtained from biopsy specimens was used in the determination of polymorphisms of the genes coding for interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-10 by PCR-RFLP, and IL-1RN by PCR. H pylori DNA extractions obtained from clinical isolates of 83 patients were used for PCR-based genotyping of H pylori cagA, vacA and babA2. Human DNA from gastric biopsies of 52 GC patients was utilized for comparative purposes. RESULTS: Cytokine polymorphisms showed no association with GCIR variability. However, gastric atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and strains with different vacA genotypes in the same stomach (mixed strain infection) were more frequently found in group A than in group B, and cagA and vacA s1b were signif icantly associated with high GCIR (P = 0.026 and 0.041, respectively). IL- 1β+3954_T/C (OR 2.1, 1.0-4.3), IL-1RN*2/L (OR 3.5, 1.7-7.3) and IL-10-592_C/A (OR 3.2, 1.5-6.8) were individually associated with GC, and a combination of these cytokine polymorphisms with H pylori vacA s1b and m1 further increased the risk (OR 7.2, 1.4-36.4). CONCLUSION: Although a proinflammatory cytokine genetic profile showed an increased risk for developing GC, the characteristics of H pylori infection, in particular the status of cagA and vacA genotype distribution seemed to play a major role in GCIR variability in Costa Rica.

Early pregnancy maternal cardiovascular profiling in the prediction of hypertensive disease in pregnancy

Prediction of hypertensive disease in pregnancy remains challenging. Risk factor based screening utilizing history, physical characteristics, uterine artery Doppler and serum markers have been used with varying success. As hypertension in pregnancy appears to be associated with changes in the maternal vasculature, we have investigated the utility of maternal arterial elasticity measurement, prior to 20 weeks gestation, in the prediction of hypertensive disease in pregnancy. A HDI/Pulsewave CR2000 Research Cardiovascular Profiling System was used to obtain radial artery pulse pressure waveforms from 623 Caucasian women at the time of their first antenatal visit. Outcome data were available in 610 cases and these comprised the study group. The results showed that women who subsequently developed gestational hypertension (n = 20) had higher baseline systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure values (though within the normal range) but similar arterial elasticity to those patients who did not develop hypertension. Women who later developed pre-eclampsia (n = 23) had, in addition, reduced large artery elasticity and increased systemic vascular resistance compared with women who did not develop hypertension. The measurement of maternal radial artery elasticity in early pregnancy may provide an additional refinement in screening for hypertensive disease, particularly pre-eclampsia, in pregnancy.
