Physiological plasticity in eucalyptus clones in the vegetative stage contributes to drought tolerance

With the expansion of eucalyptus crops to areas with severe water limitations,physiological studies involving eucalyptus clones to identify those that are tolerant to water stress become *** objective of this study was to assess morphological and physiological responses by eucalyptus clones subjected to drought stress and *** experiment consisted of three eucalyptus clones:VC865,I224 and I144 and two water regimes:control and water stress followed by rehydration,with six *** water potential,gas exchange,maximum quantum efficiency of photo systemⅡand plant height and stem diameter were evaluated under drought stress and ***6 d of rehydration,the number of leaves,leaf area and dry mass of root,leaf,stem and their total were *** clones showed intense reduction of gas exchange during the drought stress period,and only VC865 and 1144 showed rapid recovery with 3 d of *** 1224 showed greater reduction in height,stem diameter,number of leaves,water potential at midday(Ψ_(w)_(Midday)),and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystemⅡ(F_(v)/F_(m)).Clones VC865and T144 showed lower reductions inΨ_(wMidday)and F_(v)/F_(m) under ***865 had lower reductions in leaf number,leaf area and higher leaf dry mass,while clone I144 had higher height and lower reduction in root dry mass *** these clones showed higher water use efficiency with 3d of *** different phenotypic plasticities gave the clones VC865 and 1144 efficient mechanisms of acclimatization to stress and more drought tolerance,enhancing their greater capacity for recovery after stress,which allowed lower dry mass *** 1224,however,was more susceptible to drought stress,undergoing greater physiological damage with only partial recovery during rehydration.

Performance of masonry enclosure walls:lessons learned from recent earthquakes

This paper discusses the issue of performance requirements and construction criteria for masonry enclosure and infill walls. Vertical building enclosures in European countries are very often constituted by non-load-bearing masonry walls, using horizontally perforated clay bricks. These walls are generally supported and confined by a reinforced concrete frame structure of columns and beams/slabs. Since these walls are commonly considered to be nonstructural elements and their influence on the structural response is ignored, their consideration in the design of structures as well as their connection to the adjacent structural elements is frequently negligent or insufficiently detailed. As a consequence, nonstructural elements, as for wall enclosures, are relatively sensitive to drift and acceleration demands when buildings are subjected to seismic actions. Many international standards and technical documents stress the need for design acceptability criteria for nonstructural elements, however they do not specifically indicate how to prevent collapse and severe cracking, and how to enhance the overall stability in the case of moderate to high seismic loading. Furthermore, a review of appropriate measures to improve enclosure wall performance and both in-plane and out-of-plane integrity under seismic actions is addressed.

The aims of this study were:i)to compare no-till areas in two municipalities located in different regions of Brazil,along with the influence on CO_(2)Flux and GPP,and ii)to verify the difference between environmental factors followed by the trends of these variables regarding future scenarios(ARIMA time-series model number).The study was carried out in two areas with different latitudes in the municipalities of Sinop-MT and Passo Fundo-RS,both in Brazil.A time series of 19 years was performed with data acquired by remote sensing from the following satellites:i)Landsat-8(OLI and TIRS),and ii)TERRA/AQUA(MODIS).The results propound that the spectro-temporal variables are directly influenced by soil management and agricultural practices over the observation time,with a satisfactory correlation in future predictions of the variables for the next ten years,in which presented that the variation of GPP and albedo values for the two study sites would gradually increase until 2028 and the temperature remained constant between the range of its seasonality,and CO_(2)Flux tends to decrease in its seasonality,indicating a higher CO_(2) absorption.

Differences in viral kinetics between genotypes 1 and 3 of hepatitis C virus and between cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients during antiviral therapy

AIM： TO evaluate the impact of hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection with genotype 1 or 3 and the presence or absence of liver cirrhosis （LC） in the early viral kinetics response to treatment. METHODS： Naive patients （n = 46） treated with interferon-α （IFN-α） and ribavirin and followed up with frequent early HCV-RNA determinations were analysed. Patients were infected with genotype 1 （n = 28, 7 with LC） or 3 （n = 18, 5 with LC）. RESULTS： The first phase decline was larger in genotype 3 patients than in genotype 1 patients （1.72 vs 0.95 log IU/mL, P 〈 0.001）. The second phase slope decline was also larger in genotype 3 patients than in genotype 1 patients （0.87 vs 0.15 log/wk, P 〈 0.001）. Differences were found in both cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients. Genotype 1 cirrhotic patients had a slower 2^nd phase slope than non-cirrhotic patients （0.06 vs 0.18 log/wk, P 〈 0,02）. None of genotype 1 cirrhotic patients had a 1^st phase decline larger than 1 log （non-cirrhotic patients： 55%, P 〈 0.02）. A similar trend toward a slower 2nd phase slope was observed in genotype 3 cirrhotic patients but the 1^st phase slope decline was not different. Sustained viral response was higher in genotype 3 patients than in genotype 1 patients ,（72% vs 14%, P 〈 0.001） and in genotype 1 non-cirrhotic patients than in genotype 1 cirrhotic patients （19% vs 0%）. A second phase decline slower than 0.3 log per week was predictive of non-response in all groups. CONCLUSION： Genotype 3 has faster early viral decline than genotype 1. Cirrhosis correlates with a slower 2nd phase decline and possibly with a lower 1^st phase slope decline in genotype 1 patients.

Agronomic Performance of Peach Trees Grown in Subtropical Region

Peach trees are temperate climate fruit trees most planted in subtropical and tropical regions. This advance of the peach crop is mainly due to the introduction of less cold-demanding new cultivar varieties and which require using less specific techniques, such as plant growth regulators and pruning. Within this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate phenological aspects and the yield potential of the cultivars Granada, Aurora-1, Dourado-2, Douradao, Big-Aurora, Marli and Chiripá, grafted onto the “Okinawa” rootstock, planted in the region of Sao Manuel-SP, during two cultivation cycles. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design with 7 treatments and 5 replicates, with the experimental unit represented by two plants.”Granada” had early harvest in mid-September, and “Chiripá” in late November and early December, in which the former was the early-ripening cultivar and the latter was the late-ripening one. “Aurora-1” and “Dourado-2”, had the highest yield values, 18.95 and 16.57 t·ha-1 respectively, followed by “Big-Aurora” with yield values of 12.13 t·ha-1. For subtropical regions, such as São Manuel-SP, less cold-demanding cultivars are recommended, such as Aurora-1, Dourado-2 and Big-Aurora. The planting of early- and late-ripening varieties, such as Granada and Chiripá, respectively, is an interesting alternative for producers wanting to scale their production.

Feasibility and safety of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell transplantation in patients with advanced chronic liver disease

AIM： To evaluate the safety and feasibility of bone marrow cell （BMC） transplantation in patients with chronic liver disease on the waiting list for liver transplantation. METHODS： Ten patients （eight males） with chronic liver disease were enrolled to receive infusion of autologous bone marrow-derived cells. Seven patients were classified as Child-Pugh B and three as Child-Pugh C. Baseline assessment included complete clinical and laboratory evaluation and abdominal MRI. Approximately 50 mL of bone marrow aspirate was prepared by centrifugation in a ficoll-hypaque gradient. At least of 100 millions of mononuclear-enriched BMCs were infused into the hepatic artery using the routine technique for arterial chemoembolization for liver tumors. Patients were followed up for adverse events up to 4 mo. RESULTS： The median age of the patients was 52 years （range 24-70 years）. All patients were discharged 48 h after BMC infusion. Two patients complained ofmild pain at the bone marrow needle puncture site. No other complications or specific side effects related to the procedure were observed. Bilirubin levels were lower at 1 （2.19 ± 0.9） and 4 mo （2.10 ± 1.0） after cell transplantation that baseline levels （238 ± 1.2）. Albumin levels 4 mo after BMC infusion （3.73 ± 0.5） were higher than baseline levels （3.47 ± 0.5）. International normalized ratio （INR） decreased from 1.48 （SD = 0.23） to 1.43 （SD = 0.23） one month after cell transplantation. CONCLUSION： BMC infusion into hepatic artery of patients with advanced chronic liver disease is safe and feasible. In addition, a decrease in mean serum bilirubin and INR levels and an increase in albumin levels are observed. Our data warrant further studies in order to evaluate the effect of BMC transplantation in patients with advanced chronic liver disease.

Studies on habitat use have often helped explain observed variation in morphology,behavior and reproductive characteristics among populations within a single *** we analyze morphological and ecological characteristics of individuals from the Sceloporus grammicus species complex from 7 different localities(CER,El Cerezo;PAC,Pachuca;HUI,Huichapan;EZA,Emiliano Zapata;SMR,San Miguel Regla;LMJ,La Mojonera;and LMZ,La Manzana)in the state of Hidalgo,and one locality(Cahuacán)in the State of Mexico.A canonical correspondence analysis(CCA)showed that females from PAC,EZA,LMZ,HUI,SMR and CAH populations use similar microhabitats characterized mostly by bare soil,in females from LMJ and CER use microhabitats characterized primarily by vegetation and *** were observed using 12 different types of *** regard to perch height use,the CCA showed that females from PAC,LMJ,LMZ,SMR,CER and CAH populations were correlated with height to nearest perch(HNP),in the rest of the females were not related to any perch use *** contrast,the CCA showed that males from PAC,LMJ and CAH were characterized by microhabitats with higher vegetal coverage,while males from LMZ and CER used microhabitats composed of bare soil,but males from HUI and SMR populations used microhabitats composed chiefly of bare soil and *** respect to perch height use,the CCA showed that males from PAC,LMJ,EZA and LMZ were correlated with distance to the nearest perch,but the rest of the males were not correlated with any perch use *** were observed in 9 different perch *** males were larger than the females in all morphological variables ***,in both sexes the snout-vent length is positively correlated with all morphological variables,and although both the slope and ordinate of the origin of all morphological variables were larger in males than females,the analysis of covariance indicated that there is no increase in the morphological variables with inc

Background： Leptin has a strong relation to important traits in animal production, such as carcass composition,feed intake, and reproduction. It is mainly produced by adipose cells and acts predominantly in the *** this study, circulating leptin and its gene expression in muscle were evaluated in two groups of young Nellore bulls with divergent feed efficiency. Individual dry matter intake（DMI） and average daily gain（ADG） of 98 Nellore bulls were evaluated in feedlot for 70 d to determinate the residual feed intake（RFI） and select 20 animals for the high feed efficient（LRFI） and 20 for the low feed efficient（HRFI） groups. Blood samples were collected on d 56 and at slaughter（80 d） to determine circulating plasma leptin. Samples of Longissimus dorsi were taken at slaughter for leptin gene expression ***： DMI and RFI were different between groups and LRFI animals showed less back fat and rump fat thickness,as well as less pelvic and kidney fat weight. Circulating leptin increased over time in all animals. Plasma leptin was greater in LRFI on 56 d and at slaughter（P = 0.0049）. Gene expression of leptin were greater in LRFI animals（P = 0.0022） in accordance with the plasma levels. The animals of the LRFI group were leaner, ate less, and had more circulating leptin and its gene ***： These findings demonstrated that leptin plays its physiological role in young Nellore bulls, probably controlling food intake because feed efficient animals have more leptin and lower residual feed intake.
