Agronomic Performance of Cultivars of Upland Rice in the Southern of the Region of Rondonia,Brazil

The upland rice is grown in most Brazilian states. However, in many of them the yield obtained is low. The choice of cultivar more suited to a particular environment can contribute to increased productivity of this crop. This research aimed to evaluate the performance of a hybrid cultivar of upland rice (Ecco) and five conventional cultivars (BRS Monarca, BRS Primavera, AN Cambará, BRS Sertaneja and BRS MG Curinga) in two environments (Vilhena and Cerejeiras). The tests were conducted in the agricultural year 2010/2011. We evaluated the following characteristics: tillering, panicle number per unit area, number of filled grains per panicle sterile, mass of grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight, grain yield (kg·ha-1) and whole grain yield. There was no cultivar x environment interaction for all traits. Greater tillering, higher panicle number per area, higher productivity and yield of whole grains in the municipality of Cerejeiras were observed, while the highest number of sterile grains per panicle was obtained in Vilhena. The hybrid Ecco highlighted in relation to all other cultivars is in relation to tillering, panicle number per area and grain yield. The municipality of Cerejeiras is the most suitable for the cultivation of upland rice.

An Online mtDNA Tool for Identification of Neotropical Psittacid Species and Taxonomic Issues:A Study Case of the Amazona ochrocephala Complex

Parrots are among the most popular pets in the world and they are also some of the most illegally traded, particularly in Brazil. Some computational tools were recently developed by researchers based on molecular databases for taxonomy support, forensic identification and conservation purposes. In this study, the DNA Surveillance platform was used to build an online database tool for molecular identification of Brazilian Psittacids using DNA sequences of six mitochondrial genes. To illustrate possible taxonomic issues of the online tool due to interspecific hybridization or unresolved taxonomy, we focused on Amazona aestiva that is considered as one of the most common parrots in Brazil, commonly bred as pets, and considered to be part of a species complex with Amazona ochrocephala from South America. We provide three curated sequence databases, which allow the species identification of individuals or tissue samples of birds of the Psittacidae family using mitochondrial DNA markers, and a comprehensive description of a taxonomic issue involving the A. ochrocephala complex. The results obtained corroborate previous studies suggesting that these species are not reciprocally monophyletic, due to either an ancient hybridization in central Brazil, or, they maybe just are morpho-varieties of the same species. Alternatively, if A. aestiva and A. ochrocephala were considered as sister species, the data could be interpreted either as a result of secondary contact or incipient speciation. Beyond the use of mtDNA for species identification, the high mtDNA haplotype diversity observed in A. aestiva indicates its potential use in discrimination of lineages that could be an important auxiliary tool to certify the captive origin of legally commercialized parrots.

Performance of Cosmetic Ingredients Evaluated by Their Membrane Protection Efficiency

Plant extracts (PEs) are frequently used as ingredients in skin and hair care products to improve protection against the excess of sun exposure. PEs are usually selected based on their antioxidant capacity for reducing the damage in lipids and proteins, which are key molecules in the maintenance of skin homeostasis and hair integrity. Interestingly, biomolecules that do not have any antioxidant capacity can have a protective effect by physically adsorbing and inhibiting leakage of membranes. Our aims are: 1) to develop an experimental protocol that quantifies the level of membrane damage/protection;2) to recommend an approach to compare the membrane protection efficiency of different PEs;3) to briefly describe the mechanisms of membrane protection. Evaluation of membrane damage/protection is based on a phospholipid liposome system that signals the membrane rupture caused by photo-induced lipid oxidation. Carboxyfluorescein (CF) emission is monitored as a function of time (120 min) in a controlled experimental setup, in which a certain level of membrane damage is induced by Dimethyl-Methylene Blue (DMMB) photosensitized oxidation during red-light irradiation. Percentage levels of membrane damage/protection are calculated by comparing the CF fluorescence level of DMMB-liposomes in the presence of varying concentrations of membrane-protective ingredients with that of surfactant-dissolved DMMB-liposomes. Membrane protectants reduce the level of CF fluorescence during irradiation of DMMB-liposomes. Gallic acid (GA) and trehalose (Tre) were used as standard compounds to compute the levels of protection by the antioxidant and physical adsorption mechanisms, respectively. The percentage of membrane protection was shown to be linearly proportional to the concentration of the standard protectants. The upland rice productivity in the state of Rond?nia is still low, in view of the potential of culture. The use of cultivars adapted to different regions and more responsive to fertilizer employed is an essential practice which can change that. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics and productivity of two upland rice cultivars with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N-P-K) doses in two municipalities in the southern state of Rondonia region. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications in a factorial 2 × 2 × 5, with the first factor composed of two cultivars (hybrid Ecco and conventional farming AN Cambará), the second factor, the environment of the two municipalities, Cerejeiras and Vilhena and the third factor of five doses of N-P-K (0-0-0, 30-40-30, 60-60-60, 90-90-90 and 120-100-120 kg·ha-1). The characteristics evaluated were: tillering, number of integers and sterile grains per panicle, weight of 1000 grains, grain yield (kg·ha-1) and whole grain yield. There was no triple interaction between the three factors for any of the traits. The hybrid Ecco has higher tillering ability than AN Cambara and presents fewer sterile grains per panicle, heavier 1000 grains and hence greater productivity. For both cultivars, the highest yields are obtained with a dose of 120-100-120 kg·ha-1 N-P-K. For the Ecco, the productivity is achieved with this dose and the dose of 90-90-90 kg·ha-1 is statistically similar. There is no difference in productivity between the municipalities when the dose of N-P-K is less than 60-60-60 kg·ha-1. The highest yield of whole grains in function of N-P-K fertilization is obtained in Cerejeiras.

Alterations in epigenetic control of gene expression play an important role in many diseases, including gastric cancer. Many studies have identified a large number of upregulated oncogenic mi RNAs and downregulated tumour-suppressor mi RNAs in this type of cancer. In this review, we provide an overview of the role of mi RNAs, pointing to their potential to be useful as diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarkers in gastric cancer. Moreover, we discuss the influence of polymorphisms and epigenetic modifications on mi RNA activity.

The ingestion of probiotic lactic acid bacteria has been evaluated and noted that it has an effect on the balance of desirable microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract. Lactobacillus gasseri demonstrates good survival in the gastrointestinal tract, and it has been associated with a variety of probiotic activities and roles, including the reduction of fecal mutagenic enzymes, the production of bacteriocins and the stimulation of macrophages immunomodulation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of a pool of L. gasseri strains isolated from the feces of breastfed infants added in the human milk of healthy women. The milk was both pasteurized and unpasteurized, to verify the cell cytotoxicity of macrophages and to quantify the production of immunologic mediators such as IL-4, IL-6, IFN-γ, TNF-α, NO and oxygen intermediary compounds （H2O2）. The administration of raw human milk and pasteurized human milk to infants is a regular, encouraged practice in units of intensive therapy （UITs） and our present investigation verified the beneficial effect of addition of a pool of L. gasseri to pasteurized human milk （PHML）. Our results show that probiotic supplementation helped to maintain cell viability, reduced IL-6 and IFN-γ production and stimulated TNF-α, NO, H2O2, IL-4 production. Nevertheless, the results indicate that the addition of lactobacillus to human milk was not a determinant in the production of TNF-α. L. gasseri added to breast milk did not present a cytotoxic risk, and the addition ofL. gasseri to pasteurized milk of human milk bank would benefit newborns that depend on milk banks for the colonization of more desirable microbiota.

FTIR Characterization of Gelatin from Chicken Feet

The objective of this study was characterizing the gelatin from the chicken feet by FTIR （Fourier transform infrared） spectroscopy. Two gelatin samples were prepared for the experiment which were extracted of 200 g of chicken feet by a thermal bath of 4% acetyl acid solution at 60 ℃. A commercial gelatin was used to compare the results. FTIR spectra of gelatin samples were recorded using a Nicolet iS5 FTIR spectrometer equipped with an ATR/iD3 with argon horizontal cell in which the spectra were varied in the range of 400-4,000 cm1 at 16 ~C. The results showed that FTIR spectra of the chicken feet gelatin had the most with the vibration peak at wave numbers of 1,652.01 cm~ to the amide I, of 1,539.87 cm1 to the amide II, of 1,241.29 cm~ to the amide III, of 2,923.72 cm-~ to the amide B and of 3,399.56 cm~ to the amide A. The collagen composition of the chicken feet gelatins was twotimes larger than the commercial gelatin and the vibration bands to beef gelatin have been different from chicken feet gelatins. This demonstrates that chicken feet gelatins are very good nutritional quality when compared to the commercial gelatin.

CYP1A1,CYP2E1 and EPHX1 polymorphisms in sporadic colorectal neoplasms

AIM To investigate the contribution of polymorphisms in the CYP1A1, CYP2E1 and EPHX1 genes on sporadic colorectal cancer(SCRC) risk. METHODS Six hundred forty-one individuals(227 patients with SCRC and 400 controls) were enrolled in the study. The variables analyzed were age, gender, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and clinical and histopathological tumor parameters. The CYP1A1 *2A, CYP1A1 *2C CYP2E1 *5B and CYP2E1 *6 polymorphisms were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP). The EPHX1 Tyr113 His, EPHX1 His139 Arg and CYP1A1 *2C polymorphisms were detected by real-time PCR. Chisquared test and binary logistic regression were used in the statistical analysis. The present study reports bioactive constituents from biquinho pepper,such as carotenoids,capsaicinoids,and capsinoids,identified by *** pepper extract showed an antioxidant potential by DPPH(33.17±0.08%),ORAC(32.35±0.02μM TE/g),β-carotene/linoleic acid(55.80±1.30%),and FRAP(315.88±4.23μmol TE/g)***,in vivo antioxidant analyses demonstrated that the pepper extract(170μg/mL)decreased the damage promoted by H_(2)O_(2) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae *** balls were prepared using different concentrations of pepper(0.0%,0.5%,0.75%,1.0%)to investigate its antioxidant effect during frozen *** pepper effectively reduced the formation of cholesterol oxides and preserved essential fatty acids,mainly in samples containing 1.0%of ***,this treatment was more efficient than sodium erythorbate(pdation was also determined,showing that both cholesterol degradation and cholesterol oxides formation fit a first-order kinetic model(R^(2)>0.8).
