Evapotranspiration and water-use efficiency of irrigated colored cotton cultivar in semiarid regions

Irrigation studies provide a framework for evaluating agricultural production and the water resource management in locations where water is scarce. Field experiments were conducted at Barbalha- CE (northwestern Brazil) during 2004 and 2005 cropping seasons to investigate the effects of different irrigation water depths on the water-use efficiency and yield of the BrS 200-brown cotton cultivar (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Three irrigation treatments were applied: T1 = 80%;T2 = 100% and T3 = 120% of the potential evapotranspiration (ETp). The Bowen ratio-energy balance was used to obtain crop evapotrnaspiration (ETc) while daily reference evapo-transpiration (ETo) was obtained by the penman-Monteith approach. Irrigation water was applied by a sprinkler system during both cropping seasons. The daily evapotranspiration ranged from 2.59 mm·day-1 at the emergence to 5.89 mm·day-1 at first square growth stage with an accumulated value of 528.7 mm as a mean of the two cropping seasons. The average crop coefficient across both years (2004-2005) was 0.90, with minimum and maximum values of 0.46 and 1.17 at emergency and first flower growth stages, respectively. The results also showed that the increase in irrigation from 80% to 120% of ETp resulted in a significant increase in the seed-cotton yield (from 2476.0 to 3289.5 kg·ha-1), while lint percentage and water-use efficiency (WUE) were slightly reduced from 35.7% to 35.6% and from 0.60 to 0.53 kg·m-3, respectively. These results suggests that the cotton crop (cultivar BrS-200 brown) reaches higher water-use efficiency when irrigated with 80% of the crop evapotrnaspiration obtained as a function of the reference evapotranspiration and the crop coefficient proposed by FAO. However, the maximum seed-cotton yield is obtained when irrigated with 120% of that crop evapotranspiration.

Small-scale self-driving cars:A systematic literature review

The autonomous vehicle(AV)technology has the potential to significantly improve safety and efficiency of the transportation and logistics ***-scale AV testing is limited by time,space,and cost,while simulation-based testing often lacks the necessary accuracy of AV and environmental *** recent years,several initiatives have emerged to test autonomous software and hardware on scaled *** systematic literature review provides an overview of the literature surrounding small-scale self-driving cars,summarizing the current autonomous platforms deployed and focusing on the software and hardware developments in this *** studies published in English-language journals or conference papers that present small-scale testing of self-driving cars were *** of Science,Scopus,Springer Link,Wiley,ACM Digital Library,and TrID databases were used for the literature *** systematic literature search found 38 eligible *** gaps in the reviewed papers were identified to provide guidance for future *** key takeaway emerging from this manuscript are:(i)there is a need to improve the models and neural network architectures used in autonomous driving systems,as most papers present only preliminary results;(ii)increasing datasets and sharing databases can help in developing more reliable control policies and reducing bias and variance in the training process;(iii)small-scaled vehicles to ensure safety is a major benefit,and incorporating data about unsafe driving behaviors and infrastructure problems can improve the accuracy of predictive models.

Molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuroprotection by oligopeptides from snake venoms

Venom snake-derived peptides have multiple biochemical,pharmacological,and toxicological proﬁles,allowing for the discovery of new medicinal products and therapeutic *** review speciﬁcally examines the fundamental elements of neuroprotection offered by different oligopeptides derived from snake *** also includes a brief evaluation of short peptides that are being considered as potential therapeutic ***-rich peptides and tryptophyllin family peptides isolated from the crude venom of Vip.r.dae family snakes,speciﬁcally Bothrops atrox,Bothrops jararaca,and Bothrops moojeni,have been shown to have pro-survival properties,the ability to reduce oxidative stress,and the ability to promote cell viability and mitochondrial *** signiﬁcant mechanisms are related to the neuroprotection mediated by snake venom oligopeptides:(1)Activation of the L-arginine metabolite pathway,such as polyamines from ornithine metabolism,which reduces N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMda)-type glutamate receptor activity;(2)Enhancement of cell viability by activating the nerve growth factor-signaling pathway;and(3)Activation of the Muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype M1(mAChr-M1).These small peptides show promise as neuroprotective agents against a variety of neurodegenerative disorders.

Simulated rainfall in Brazil:An alternative for assesment of soil surface processes and an opportunity for technological development

rainfall simulators(rS)have been used,above all,to evaluate hydrological processes related to soil water infiltration,surface runoff and soil *** allow repeatability of rain application with different precipitation intensities in field and/or laboratory conditions and should produce events with physical characteristics similar to natural *** this manuscript,we carried out a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of studies with simulated rainfall in Brazil to assess the temporal evolution of publications,the main topics addressed and the degree of technological development of the *** searched for the terms“rainfall simulator”Or“simulated rainfall”AND“Brazil”in the Scopus,Web of Science,SciELO and Google Scholar *** found 143 articles published in the last 37 years(1985-2022).Our findings indicate that the main research areas covered in papers are soil erosion(57.34%),soil water infiltration(24.47%),nutrient losses(9.8%)and rS development and calibration/assessment(8.39%).In recent years,the number of published papers in international high-impact factor journals has *** of the papers(49.65%)refer to studies carried out by institutions located in the south and southeast regions of ***,there is a large gap of studies on simulated rainfall in other regions of Brazil,where important biomes such as the Cerrado,Amazon,Caatinga,and their transitions are *** study informs research priorities on soil erosion under simulated rainfall and provides a bibliographic database that can assist in more detailed future analyses.

This paper aims to create visible light driven ternary photocatalysts using zinc oxide(ZnO),cerium(IV)oxide(CeO_(2)),and carbon xerogel(CX) as constituent *** use of CeO_(2) is based on the creation of direct-Z-scheme heterojunctions with the ZnO and the consequent diminishing of charge recombination,whereas the carbon xerogel inclusion is predicted to minimize bandgap energy,decrease electro n-hole reco mbination,and boost specific surface *** re,the choice of the black-wattle tannin as a carbonaceous precursor was targeted at the development of an environmentally friendly and affordable *** existence of the hexagonal phase of zinc oxide and cubic structure of the cerium(IV) oxide in the ternary material was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,with the latter also suggesting chemical bonding between the ZnO and the CX due to the creation of zinc oxycarbide *** inclusion of the carbon xerogel provokes a significant modification in the morphology of the ternary material,resulting in an increased surface area and smaller particle *** CX/ZnO-CeO_(2) ternary composite obtains the highest photocatalytic efficiency among all the materials studied,degrading 100% of 4-chlorophenol under simulated sunlight and 68% under visible radiation,after 5 *** increased photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between the semiconductors,higher visible light response,and higher specific surface area,as evidenced by the results obtained by active radical scavenging,chronoamperometry,diffuse reflectance spectroscopy,and N_(2) adsorption-desorption isotherms.

ENSO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

purpose:This meta-analytical study aimed to explore the effects of resistance training(rT) volume on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation in postmenopausal and older ***:A systematic search was performed for randomized controlled trials in pubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,and *** controlled trials with postmenopausal and older females that compared rT effects on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation with a control group(CG) were *** reviewers selected the studies,extracted the data,and performed the risk of bias and certainty of the evidence(Grading of recommendations,Assessment,development,and Evaluation(GrAde)) *** body and abdominal adiposity,blood lipids,glucose,and C-reactive protein were included for meta-analysis.A random-effects model,standardized mean difference(Hedges’ g),and 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were used for ***:Twenty randomized controlled trials(overall risk of bias:some concerns;GrAde:low to very low) with overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females were *** groups were divided into low-volume rT(LVrT,~44 sets/week) and high-volume rT(HVrT,~77 sets/week).Both rT groups presented improved body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation when compared to ***,HVrT demonstrated higher effect sizes than LVrT for glucose(HVrT=-1.19;95%CI:-1.63 to-0.74;LVrT=-0.78;95%CI:-1.15 to-0.41) and C-reactive protein(HVrT=-1.00;95%CI:-1.32 to-0.67;LVrT=-0.34;95%CI,-0.63 to-0.04)) when compared to ***:Compared to CG,HVrT protocols elicit greater improvements in metabolic risk and inflammation outcomes than LVrT in overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females.
