Suicidal Behaviours in Sickle Cell Patients at the Douala Sickle Cell Care Centre in Cameroon

Introduction: Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary disease that combines physical and psychological manifestations, including suicidal tendencies. So far, to our knowledge, no study has been conducted on suicidal behaviours among people with sickle cell disease in Cameroon. This is what justifies our study on the prevalence and factors related to suicidal behaviors in our study population. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, analytical study of 171 sickle cell patients aged from 12 years upwards who came to the sickle cell disease care service of the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala, over a period of 6 months, that is, from 1 January to 31 June 2022. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with questions on suicidal behaviours based on the “MINI” (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). The data were processed using the SPSS 26.0 software. The related factors were studied in both a bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: Female sickle cell patients accounted for 60.2% of the sample. The mean age was 23.36 ± 8.42 years. Suicidal ideation was prevalent in 56% of cases and 13% attempted suicide. The factors most associated with suicidal ideation were: primary level of education (OR = 0.08 (0.09 - 0.79);p = 0.03), feeling unworthy of life (OR = 0.40 (0.08 - 1.96);p = 0.02), not often being considered by those around them (OR = 2.97 (1.26 - 6.99);p = 0.01), lack of family support (OR = 0.34 (0.15 - 0.77);p = 0.01). Meanwhile, the factors associated with suicide attempts were: the fact of being rarely exposed to suicide-related media (OR = 4.17 (1.40 - 71.80);p = 0.03), and a constant feeling of sadness when returning home (OR = 18.02 (1.59 - 20.55);p = 0.01). Conclusion: More than half of sickle cell patients had had suicidal thoughts and 1/6 had made at least one suicide attempt, women and young adults being the most concerned. It is therefore necessary to ensure optimum psychological care for patients with sickle cell disease.

The Eu(Ⅲ)nitrate complex of the meso-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethylene)-1,2-(R,S)-cyclohexanediamine ligand was synthesized and characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray *** crystal lattice of the complex is capable of absorbing and desorbing selectively acetonitrile molecules,at 293 K upon an acetonitrile vapor pressure of^0.1×10^5 *** process,which is partially reversible,can be easily followed by both powder X-ray diffraction(P-XRD)and Eu(III)luminescence *** acetonitrile molecule,located in the outer coordination sphere of the metal ion,does not affect the radiative transition probability of 5 D0 level of Eu(Ⅲ)and also it does not activate further non-radiative channels from this *** the other hand,this molecule is capable of affecting the energy position and intensities of the crystal field components of the 5 D0→7 F2 *** complex in solid form can be considered a promising material for the optical sensing of acetonitrile vapors.

Surrogate potency assays:Comparison of binding profiles complements dose response curves for unambiguous assessment of relative potencies

Surface plasmon resonance(SPR) systems are widely used for detailed characterization of antibody activities including antigen and Fc-receptor binding. During the later stages of development, where the focus is to ensure that established critical quality attributes(CQAs) are maintained during cell culture,purification and formulation processes, analysis is simplified, and relative potencies are often determined. Here, simulation of binding data revealed that relative potency values, determined via parallel line analysis(PLA) and half maximal effective concentration(EC50) analysis accurately reflect changes in active concentration only if binding kinetics remain unchanged. Changes in the association rate constant shifted dose response curves, and therefore relative potencies, in the same way as changes in analyte concentration do. However, for interactions characterized by stable binding, changes in the dissociation rate constant did not result in any shift, suggesting that this type of change may go unnoticed in the dose response curve. Thus, EC50 and PLA analyses of dose response curves obtained with an anti-TNF-α antibody were complemented with the Biacore functionality for sensorgram comparison analysis, whereby changes in antigen and Fc-receptor binding profiles could be detected. Next, analysis of temperature stressed TNF-α antibody revealed that calibration free concentration analysis(CFCA) data correlated perfectly with relative potency values. Together, these results demonstrate that combinations of SPR based dose response curves, sensorgram comparison and CFCA can be used to strengthen the confidence in relative potency assessments, and suggest that SPR can potentially be used as a surrogate potency assay in the quality control of biotherapeutic medicines.

Interactions between Axillary Branches of Arabidopsis

Studies of apical dominance have benefited greatly from two-branch assays in pea and bean, in which the shoot system is trimmed back to leave only two active cotyledonary axillary branches. In these two-branch shoots, a large body of evidence shows that one actively growing branch is able to inhibit the growth of the other, prompting studies on the nature of the inhibitory signals, which are still poorly understood. Here, we describe the establishment of two-branch assays in Arabidopsis, using consecutive branches on the bolting stem. As with the classical studies in pea and bean, these consecutive branches are able to inhibit one another＇s growth. Not only can the upper branch inhibit the lower branch, but also the lower branch can inhibit the upper branch, illustrating the bi-directional action of the inhibitory signals. Using mutants, we show that the inhibition is partially dependent on the MAX pathway and that while the inhibition is clearly transmitted across the stem from the active to the inhibited branch, the vascular connectivity of the two branches is weak, and the MAX pathway is capable of acting unilaterally in the stem.

Bridging large gaps in the injured spinal cord: mechanical and biochemical tissue adaptation

Incidence and consequences of spinal cord injuries： World- wide, every year 250,000-500,000 people suffer from spinal cord injury （SCI; ***, 2013）. Traumatic lesions of the spinal cord lead to primary and secondary injury mechanisms, which result in axon damage, loss of signal conduction, demyelination of axons and long-lasting deficits in motor and sensory func- tion. The extent of the damage and the subsequent functional loss depend on the spinal level and the severity of the primary injury. Furthermore, pathophysiological and pathomorpholog- ical responses in acute and chronic SCI share similar but also different requirements for treatment.

Micromechanical adaptation as a treatment for spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury: Thus far injury of the spinal cord is incurable and, in the majority of cases, a devastating and life-changing event. The worldwide incidence rate of spinal cord injury (SCI) ranges from 250,000 to 900,000 (***, 2013;Kumar et al., 2018) new cases per year. SCI outcome includes the damage of axons, demyelination of axons, loss of signal transduction, and consequential long-lasting motor and sensory deficits. Additionally, the non-use of muscles can lead to atrophy and joint contractures, thereby further reducing the possibility of recovery. Depending on the spinal level and the severity of the injury, the extent of the damage can vary and spontaneous recovery is possible to varying degrees.

Lithostructural controls in Douala-Buea Region landscape (SW Cameroon margin):Insights from morphometric analysis

The Douala-Buea Region(DBR;4°-5°N,9°-10°30’E),a portion of the southern Cameroon passive margin,developed on the Proterozoic granito-gneissic basement and the Cretaceous to Recent volcanosedimentary cover,was explored in order to evaluate the lithology and tectonics controls on its landscape usingthequalitativeandquantitative geomorphological analyses based on 30 m resolution Digital Elevation Models(DEM)and field *** area displays an uneven and complex landscape differentiated into four morphological units:Douala,Nkondjock,Kumba and Buea *** Douala Unit corresponds to the Coastal Plain and is extended on the Douala-Kribi/*** Nkondjock Unit represents a middle plateau developed on a Proterozoic granito-gneissic *** Kumba Unit matches with the southernmost volcanic Western Cameroon High *** Buea Unit corresponds to the Mount Cameroon *** relief analysis through mountain-front sinuosity(Smf,1.19–1.43)and relative relief ratio(Rr,0.10–2.31)vary from one unit to *** drainage network analysis including drainage patterns,stepped longitudinalriverprofiles,theassociated morphometric indexes,notably the concavity index(IC,0.56–0.88),deviation(D,267–2912 m),basin asymmetry factor(A_(F),6.37–42.12),hypsometric integral(HI,0.10–0.29),valley floor width to valley height ratio(V_(f),0.36–2.75),elongation ratio(R_(e),0.30–0.50),watershed slope(S,6.88–88.88)and stream length gradient index(SL,0–3332)vary from one basin to another *** results also show the heterogeneous and uneven DBR landscape controlled by its lithology and active *** drainage system reveals concave to concavo-convex longitudinal river profile shapes with knick points,asymmetric basins,and fault reactivations,and highlights the tectonics activity that used to occur through the time and their control on the ***,they document the lithostructural controls on the DBR landscape evolution,extendable in the whole

Magnesium and its alloys are one of the most used materials for bone implants and tissue *** are characterized by numerous advantages such as biodegradability,high biocompatibility and mechanical properties with values close to the human ***,the implant surface must be adequately tuned,or Mg-based alloys must be alloyed with other chemical elements due to their increased corrosion effect in physiological *** article reviews the clinical challenges related to bone repair and regeneration,classifying bone defects and presenting some of the most used and modern therapies for bone injuries,such as Ilizarov or Masquelet techniques or stem cell *** implant interface challenges are related to new bone formation and fracture healing,implant degradation and hydrogen release.A detailed analysis of mechanical properties during implant degradation is extensively described based on different literature studies that included in vitro and in vivo tests correlated with material properties’***-based trauma implants such as plates and screws,intramedullary nails,Herbert screws,spine cages,rings for joint treatment and regenerative scaffolds are presented,taking into consideration their manufacturing technology,the implant geometrical dimensions and shape,the type of in vivo or in vitro studies and fracture *** technologies that modify or adapt the Mg-based implant interfaces are described by presenting the main surface microstructural modifications,physical deposition and chemical conversion *** last part of the article provides some recommendations from a translational perspective,identifies the challenges associated with Mg-based implants and presents some future *** review outlines the available literature on trauma and regenerative bone implants and describes the main techniques used to control the alloy corrosion rate and the cellular environment of the implant.

Challenges and perspectives on high and intermediate-temperature sodium batteries

Energy storage systems are selected depending on factors such as storage capacity, available power, discharge time, self-discharge, efficiency, or durability. Additional parameters to be considered are safety, cost, feasibility, and environmental aspects. Sodium-based batteries （Na-S, NaNiC12） typically require operation temperatures of 300-350 ~C. The high operating temperatures substantially increase the operating costs and raise safety issues. This updated review describes the state-of-the-art materials for high-temperature sodium batteries and the trends towards the development and optimization of intermediate and low-temperature devices. Recent advances in inorganic solid electrolytes, glass-ceramic electrolytes, and polymer solid electrolytes are of immense importance in all-solid-state sodium batteries. Systems such as Na~ super ionic conductor （NASICON, Nal^xZr2PB-~SixOl2 （0 -〈 x _〈 3））, glass-ceramic 94Na3PS4＂6Na4SiS4, and polyethylene oxide （PEO）-sodium triflate （NaCF3SO3） are also discussed. Room temperature ionic liquids （RTILs） are also included as novel electrolyte solvents. This update discusses the progress of on-going strategies to enhance the conductivity, optimize the electrolyte/electrode interface, and improve the cell design of emerging technologies. This work aims to cover the recent advances in electrode and electrolyte materials for sodium- sulfur and sodium-metal-halide （zeolite battery research Africa project （ZEBRA）） batteries for use at high and intermediate temperatures.

Dogs engage in play behavior at every age and the play bow is their most iconic playful ***,the function of this posture is still under ***,we selected the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog(CWD)as a model breed to clarify the function of the play *** analyzed frame-by-frame 118 sessions of 24 subjects and recorded 76 play bow *** found that all the play bows were performed in the visual field of the playmate suggesting that the sender takes into account the attentional state of the receiver when releasing the *** drawing survival curves and using log-rank test we found that play bow was mainly performed during a short pause in an ongoing session and that its performance triggered the playmate’s reaction *** findings show that play bow functions in restoring the partner motivation to ***,by using a sequential analysis and a generalized mixed model,we found no evidence supporting the metacommunicative function of the play *** signal did not necessarily precede a contact offensive behavior(e.g.,play biting and play pushing)and it was not affected by the level of asymmetry of the play *** conclusion,in CWDs play bow can be considered a visual signal useful to maintain the motivation to play in the ***,we suggest that the mismatched number of play bows emitted by the 2 players in a given session can be predictive of their different motivations to play.
