Genetic differentiation in functional traits among wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) half-sib lines

Understanding intra-specific variation in leaf functional traits is one of the key requirements for the evaluation of species adaptive capacity to ongoing climate change, as well as for designing long-term breeding and conservation strategies. Hence, data of 19 functional traits describing plant physiology, antioxidant properties, anatomy and morphology were determined on 1-year-old seedlings of wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) half-sib lines. The variability within and among half-sib lines, as well as the estimation of multi-trait association, were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference test and multivariate analyses: principal component analysis (PCA), canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) and stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA). Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to evaluate linear correlation between the study parameters. The results of the ANOVA showed the presence of statistically significant differences (P < 0.01) among half-sib lines for all study traits. The differences within half-sib lines, observed through the contribution of the examined sources of variation to the total variance (%), had higher impact on total variation in the majority of the examined traits. Pearson’s correlation analysis and PCA showed strong relationships between gas exchange in plants and leaf size and stomatal density, as well as between leaf biomass accumulation, intercellular CO_(2) concentration and parameters related to antioxidant capacity of plants. Likewise, the results of SDA indicate that transpiration and stomatal conductance contributed to the largest extent, to the discrimination of the wild cherry half-sib lines. In addition, PCA and CDA showed separation of the wild cherry half-sib lines along the first principal component and first canonical variable with regards to humidity of their original sites. The Salicylic Acid Receptor NPR3 Is a Negative Regulator of the Transcriptional Defense Response during Early Flower Development in Arabidopsis

Arabidopsis NON-EXPRESSOR OF PR1 （NPR1） is a transcription co-activator that plays a central role in regulating the transcriptional response to plant pathogens. The NPR family consists of NPR1 and five NPRl-like genes. The NPR1 paralog NPR3 has recently been shown to function as a receptor of the plant hormone salicylic acid and to mediate proteosomal degradation of NPR1. The function of NPR3 protein during early flower development was revealed through a detailed molecular-genetic analysis including promoter transcriptional fusion analysis, phenotype characterization of npr3-3 mutants/overexpressors, and whole-plant fitness analysis. The physical interaction between NPR3 and NPR1/ TGA2 was explored using bimolecular fluorescence complementation analysis in onion epidermal cells, Here, we show that NPR3 expression was strongest in the petals and sepals of developing flowers and declined after flower opening. Consistently with this observation, an npr3 knockout mutant displayed enhanced resistance to Pseudomonas syringae infection of immature flowers, but not leaves. Developing npr3 flowers exhibited increased levels of basal and induced PR1 transcript accumulation. However, the npr3 mutant showed lower fitness compared to Col-0 in the absence of pathogen. Moreover, NPR3 was shown to interact with NPR1 and TGA2 in vivo. Our data suggest that NPR3 is a negative regulator of defense responses during early flower development and it may function through the association with both NPR1 and TGA2.

Application of pre-emergence herbicides in poplar nursery production

In addition to pests and diseases, weeds are a major problem in poplar nursery production. The possibilities of herbicide application in juvenile poplar growth were researched, taking into account that weeds are one of the main limiting factors. The following pre-emergence herbicides were tested： acetochlor, S-metolachlor, metribuzin,oxifluorfen, and dimethenamid during two vegetation seasons at two locations, which differed by the soil physicochemical characteristics. The study results show that the number of weeds on sample plots was significantly reduced by the tested herbicides when compared to control plots. The highest reduction in the number of weeds was achieved using the herbicides acetochlor and metribuzin. However, metribuzin showed a phytotoxic effect on sandy soil. Metribuzin application is recommended only on the soils with higher contents of organic matter, where the phytotoxic effect was absent. Acetochlor, S-metolachlor, oxifluorfen, and dimethenamid were not phytotoxic to poplars and can be used for weed suppression in the production of poplar plants.

Organic Cultivation of Lemon Ballm （Melissa officinalis） in Macedonia

The possibility for perspective growing of medicinal, aromatic and spice plants, can be expected only if their cultivation is based on the principles of organic farming. The cultivation of this group of plants is usually associated with satisfactory yield level and raw materials with uniform quality. This paper contains the most important features of lemon balm （Melissa officinalis）, and methods of cultivation. Data of two annual activities are presented and they are related with organic system of cultivation in the central part of Macedonia. The objective of this study is to analyze, determine and demonstrate the economic viability of lemon balm organic production with irrigation. In the first year, there were only two moving, yielding 500 kg/ha of above-ground plant dry mass. In the second year, there were three moving, yielding 6,775 kg/ha of above-ground plant dry mass. Economic analysis is proved that profitability in organically produced lemon balm is obtained in the second year of growing when the profit reached $6,150/ha.

背景：本文介绍了西医与中医学角度诊断,鉴别和治疗抑郁症的进展。抑郁症是最常见的并且难以治疗的疾病之一。它表现为空虚感,深深的悲哀或痛苦,失落感甚则产生自杀的想法。中西医结合治疗的进展也包含在本文的分析中。目的：第一是回顾了对抑郁症的不同种类的治疗方法。首先,我们将介绍不同的西医治疗方法与中医疗法。然后,我们将介绍使用它们作为单一疗法或中西医结合疗法的差异,重点介绍了针灸疗法。为此我们查阅并综述了诸多文献。第二是要表明针灸可以作为治疗抑郁症的一种良好而有效的疗法,并展示了临床病例报告。方法：综述了29篇文献集中论述抑郁症的不同治疗方法差异,18篇文献论述中医角度分析抑郁症及抑郁症的中医针灸治疗。我们检索了有关的国内外主流数据库中关于使用针灸治疗抑郁症的疗效差异文章：Medline, The Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycINFO,日本大型数据库,韩国核心针灸杂志和通过中国知网查阅检索的中国期刊文献。我们的主要焦点是针灸作为抑郁症的治疗。因此,我们还介绍了导师刘清国教授针灸治疗抑郁症的理念方法与经验,描述了刘清国教授在北京中医药大学国医堂治疗抑郁症的临床病例观察。结果：许多研究表明无论针灸作为单一疗法还是辅助西药治疗或其他结合疗法均减少、减轻了抑郁症的症状。几乎所有的研究报告表明,使用针灸与西药相比,疗效没有特别显著的差异。在大多数研究中,西药(抗抑郁药物)是西医治疗中的主要疗法。我们发现一些情况下针灸疗法被更倾向于使用,因为它没有任何显著的副作用。例如孕妇,西药治疗会影响新生婴儿的情况。我们描述的临床病例观察都是使用中医针灸疗法治疗成功的例子。他们是导师刘清国教授在北京中医药大学国医堂门诊中使用开郁调神针法治疗的。结论：我们的结论是中医针灸疗法可用于治疗重度抑郁症。它与标准西医治疗一样有效,并且由于它近乎没有副作用,在一些情况下,实际上是优选的治疗方法。
