Background: Dementia incidence increases dramatically from age 65 to age 85, with many studies reporting a doubling every 5 years. The incidence beyond age 85 is not established. Obj.ctive: To estimate the incidence of dementia as a function of age, with a particular focus on persons aged 85 and over. Methods: The Bronx Aging Study began in 1980 with 488 healthy, nondemented community-dwelling individuals, age 75 to 85. Persons in the study received clinical examinations and cognitive testing approximately every 12 months until death or loss to follow-up. The diagnosis of dementia was made using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-R at diagnostic case conferences. Dementia incidence rates were calculated for 5-year age bands using person-time of follow-up as the denominator. Results: The relative incidence rate ratios of dementia for age 80 to 84 vs 75 to 79 was 2.32 (95%CI 1.23 to 4.37), the relative rate for age 85 to 89 vs 80 to 84 was 1.89 (95%CI 1.26 to 2.83), the relative rate for age 90 to 94 vs 85 to 89 was 1.49 (95%CI 0.86 to 2.58), while the relative rate for age 95 to 99 vs 90 to 94 was 1.31 (95%CI 0.38 to 4.46). Similar results were seen for men and women considered separately. Had the rate of increase from age 75 to 89 continued into the 90s, the study would have had 73%power to detect a significant difference between the rates for age 90 to 94 and 85 to 89 given the amount of observed follow-up time. Conclusions: Whereas dementia incidence continues to increase beyond age 85, the rate of increase appears to slow relative to that of 65-to 85-year-olds. These results suggest that dementia in the oldest old might be related not to the aging process itself but with age-associated risk factors.

Processing Effects on Phytochemical Content and Antioxidative Potential of Ginger <i>Zingiber officale</i>

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Ginger has been used as a condiment and for the treatment of ailments for many years. However, there are limited studies on the antioxidant and scavenging power of processed ginger. The obj.ctives of this study were to determine the effects that processing has on the total phenolic and flavanoid content of ginger and its antioxidant potential using 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Radical-Scavenging Activity and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP). Fresh ginger (FG) was used as a control with oven drying (OD) sun drying (SD) and freeze drying (FD) as processing methods. Freeze-dried ginger (77.87%) showed a significantly higher (p < 0.05) free radical scavenging ability as compared to other treatment groups (18.40% - 72.90%). However, sundried ginger had the highest ferric-reducing antioxidant power at 35.28 ± 0.69 mmol Fe (II)/mg ginger. Total phenolic content content (mg GAE/100g) for fresh, oven died, sun-dried, and freeze-dried were 514.02 ± 3.92, 796.46 ± 8.16, 878.76 ± 13.17, and 1021.15 ± 12.95, respectively. Flavanoid content of processed ginger was highest in freeze-dried samples (458.82 CE/100g ginger).

Chemopreventive Potential of Canola Leafy Greens and Other Cruciferous Vegetables on Azoxymethane (AOM)-Induced Colon Cancer in Fisher-344 Male Rats

Cruciferous vegetables have great health benefits, and their components may be significant in the inhibition of colon tumors. The obj.ctive of this study was to investigate and compare the chemopreventive potential of cabbage, turnip greens, collard greens and canola greens on azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colon cancer. Following a one-week acclimatization period, forty-two Fisher-344 male rats were randomly assigned to five groups (treatment groups: n = 8;control: n = 10). Four groups were fed treatment diets consisting of the selected cruciferous vegetables at 5%, while the C group was fed AIN-93 growth diet. Colon tumors were induced by administration of AOM at 7 and 8 weeks of age and rats were killed by CO2 asphyxiation at 45 weeks of age. Results show a 42.85% tumors incidence in rats fed canola greens compared to 100% in the rats fed cabbage and the control. Rats fed control had higher tumors/ tumor bearing rat (TBR) ratio (4.5) compared to those seen in treatment groups (1 - 1.71). Significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) were noted in weight gain, cecal wall weight and total cecal weight in the control compared to treatment groups. Hepatic catalase (CAT) and Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST) activities (43.05 and 2.02 μmol/mg, respectively) in rats fed canola were significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) compared to the control (10.22 and 0.58 μmol/mg) and other treatment groups. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (μmol/mg) in rats fed canola (0.29), cabbage (0.26) and turnip greens (0.25) were similar, however, significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) compared to the control (0.09). Activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) increased in the order: collard greens > canola greens > turnip greens > cabbage > control. Selected cruciferous vegetables, including canola leafy greens, were effective in reducing incidence of AOM-induced colon tumors in Fisher-344 male rats and may be useful as dietary chemopreventive agents.

Role of topical heparin in the management of burns:experience in a district government hospital of Karnataka in South India

Aim:Heparin is a multifaceted compound with uses not only as an anticoagulant,but also as an anti-inflammatory,anti-allergenic,anti-histaminic,anti-serotonin,anti-proteolytic and neoangiogenic agent.The aim of the study was to study the effect of topical heparin in the management of second-degree burns.Methods:Between December 2005 and j.nuary 2007,60 consecutive patients,aged 10-60 years,with first-and second-degree thermal inj.ries ranging from 10%to 60%,were randomly enrolled in the study divided into a control group(C)and a heparin group(H)of 30 patients each.Results:Patients treated with topical heparin experienced statistically significant improved pain relief,faster healing,fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.The maj.rity of the patients admitted were in an economically productive age group and were predominantly female.The distribution between the two groups according to age,type of burns and extent of burns was not statistically different.Conclusion:The current study demonstrates the efficacy of topical heparin in the treatment of first-and second-degree burns.
