Pre-emergence herbicides affect seedling emergence of tropical forest tree species

Testing techniques to reduce weed infestation is a crucial step in developing direct tree seeding systems. The use of pre-emergence herbicides may be an alternative to manual weeding techniques, but so far, information on how they affect the seeds of native tree species is scarce. We established a greenhouse experiment to evaluate the effects of four pre-emergence herbicides (atrazine, diuron, isoxaflutole and oxyfluorfen) on weed suppression and seedling emergence and early growth of seven tropical forest tree species (Annona coriacea Mart., Citharexylum myrianthum Cham., Cordia ecalyculata Vell., Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Psidium guajava l., Pterogyne nitens Tul. and Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi). The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with five treatments and five replicates. The treatments consisted of a single dose of each pre-emergence herbicide and a control. Throughout the 60 days after sowing we evaluated weed cover and seedling emergence and early growth of tree species. Overall, our results suggest that all tested herbicides reduced weed cover; however, they also negatively affected tree species seedling emergence. Of the four herbicides tested, atrazine and diuron showed the greatest effects on tree seedling emergence, oxyfluorfen was least aggressive towards native species and isoxaflutole was most effective in weed control. Native tree species varied in their responses to herbicides, indicating that future experiments should increase the number of species tested as well as investigate how seed traits can affect the species responses to different herbicides.

This study proposes a methodology for assessing the availability of voltage source converter high-voltage direct current(HVDC)grids based on the enumeration methodology of contingency analysis with N−2 criteria and makes contributions in the computation of remedial actions and the definition and computation of reliability indices applied for HVDC ***,this study proposes the computation of remedial actions based on an optimal power flow,looking to maintain power exchanges between HVDC and high-voltage alternating current grids,when a contingency occurs on the HVDC grid and converter stations or HVDC lines are out of their operating *** the other hand,an HVDC grid has the function of injecting and extracting power from AC interconnected zones,and then traditionally used nodal reliability indices must be modified to indices that reflect the performance of the HVDC network to fulfil its function of interconnection of *** study defines two sets of availability indices applicable to HVDC grids:(i)loss of power and energy extracted from the DC grid to the AC zones and(ii)loss of power and energy injected to AC zones from the DC *** proposed methodology is applied to perform the availability assessment of the CIGRE B4 DC grid test system and the results are presented.

Tioconazole(TCZ), a broad-spectrum antifungal agent, has significant activity against Candida albicans and other Candida species, and therefore, it is indicated for the topical treatment of superficial *** main goal of this work is to report an exhaustive identification and characterization procedure to improve and facilitate the online quality control and continuous process monitoring of TCZ in bulk material and loaded in two different dosage forms: ovules and nail lacquer. The methodologies were based on thermal(differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), melting point, and thermogravimetry(TG)),spectroscopic(ultraviolet(UV), Raman, near infrared(NIR), infrared spectroscopy coupled to attenuated total reflectance(FTIR-ATR), and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)), microscopic and x-ray diffraction(xRD). The TCZ bulk powder showed a high crystallinity, as observed by xRD, with a particles size distribution(3–95 mm) resolved by microscopic measurements. TCZ melting point(82.8 °C) and a degradation peak centered at 297.8 °C were obtained by DSC and DTG, respectively. An unambiguous structure elucidation of TCZ was obtained by mono-and two-dimensional1 H and13 C NMR spectral data analysis. The FTIR-ATR, Raman and NIR spectra of both the raw material and the commercial products were analyzed and their characteristic bands were tabulated. The best methods for TCZ identification in ovules were DSC, TG, xRD, NIR and Raman, while NIR and FTIR-ATR were the most appropriate techniques to analyze it in the nail lacquer. DSC, TG, DRx, Raman, FTIR-ATR and NIR spectroscopy are effective techniques to be used in online process analysis, because they do not require sample preparation, and they are considerably sensitive to analyze compl.x samples.

lipid droplets （lDs） were once viewed as simple, inert lipid micelles. However, they are now known to be organelles with a rich proteome involved in a myriad of cellular processes. lDs are heterogeneous in nature with different sizes and compositions of phospholipids, neutral lipids and proteins. This review takes a focused look at the roles of proteins involved in the regulation of lD formation, expansion, and morphology. The related proteins are summarized such as the fat-specific protein （Fsp27）, fat storage-inducing trans- membrane （FIT） proteins, seipin and ADP-ribosylation factor 1-coat protein compl.x I （Arf-COPI）. Finally, we present important challenges in lD biology for a deeper understanding of this dynamic organelle to be achieved.

The Kambala and Barchin brackish lakes （Baraba steppe, southern West Siberia） contain an organic-rich sapropel layer that was formed in oxygen-depleted waters. We measured the bulk sediment elemental composition, the water chemistry and determined the mineralogical composition and predominant biota species （Diatoms and Cyanobacteria in phytoplankton community respectively） in the lakes. The result indicates that the first lake has a siliceous type of sapropel and the second a carbonaceous one. A computer thermodynamic model was developed for chemical interaction in water-bottom sediment systems of the Kambala and Barchin lakes. The surface sodium bicarbonate waters are supersaturated with respect to calcite, magnesite （or low Mg-calcite）, quartz and chlorite with minor strontianite, apatite and goethite （pH 8.9-9.3, Eh 0.3 V）. Nevertheless, it is shown that during sapropel deposition, deep silt waters should be anoxic （Eh〈0 V）. The virtual component CH20 has been used to create an anoxic environment suitable for pyrite formation due to the biotic community impact and abiotic reduction. Thermodynamic calculation has shown that silt water is not necessarily euxinic （anoxic and sulfidic）. Depending on Eh, sulfate sulfur can dominate in solution, causing the formation of gypsum together with pyrite. An attempt was made to find a reason for solution supersaturation with respect to Ca and Mg ions due to their compl.xation with humic acids.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and the learning effect of an isokinetic trunk fl.xion-extension protocol designed to simultaneously assess trunk muscle strength and *** addition,the effect of the participants’sex on the reliability data was ***:Fifty-seven healthy and physically active young men(n=28)and women(n=29)performed the isokinetic protocol 5 times,separated by a week between each of the first 4 sessions and by a month between the last 2 *** protocol consisted of performing 4 trials of 15 maximum fl.xion-extension concentric exertions at 120°/s(range of trunk motion=50°).The absolute and relative peak torque and total work were calculated to assess trunk fl.xion and extension *** addition,endurance ratio,modified endurance ratio,fatigue final ratio,recovery ratio,and modified recovery ratio variables were used for the assessment of trunk muscle endurance in both ***:Regarding the absolute reliability,no relevant changes were found between paired-comparison sessions for most strength and endurance variables,except for total work and relative total work variables in the fl.xion movement in both *** addition,the typical error of the isokinetic variables was lower than 10%in both males and females,and minimum detectable changes ranged from 7%to 20%,with a tendency to be higher in females and in endurance *** strength variables showed high-to-excellent intraclass correlation coefficients(ICCs;>0.74);however,for the endurance variables only the endurance ratio and the modified endurance ratio obtained moderate-to-high ICC values(0.57lysis of the variance reported no significant differences between consecutive pairs of sessions for most variables in both ***:Overall,these findings provide clinicians,trainers,and researchers with a 10-min single-session protocol to perform a reliable muscle strength and endurance evaluatio
