Dear Editor,The emergence of Omicron subvariants has required additional boosters to induce a highly neutralizing antibody response.1 However,the new Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and XBB,evade the humoral response induced by multiple mRNA vaccinations and infections.2,3 CansinoBio(Ad5-nCoV)is a single-dose adenovirus vector-based vaccine with high protection against severe disease4 but lower efficacy and antibody response than mRNA ***,hybrid immunity induced by infection plus vaccine or heterologous vaccines has produced a robust neutralizing antibody response.

In this study, a commercial cube-shaped open-celled cellulose sponge adsorbent was modified by in-situ co-precipitation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles(SPION) and used to remove As(V) from aqueous solutions. Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS) and TEM identified maghemite as the main iron phase of the SPION nanoparticles with an average size 13 nm. Batch adsorption experiments at 800 mg/L showed a 63% increase of adsorption capacity when loading 2.6 wt.% mass fraction of SPION in the *** determination of the adsorption thermodynamic parameters indicated that the As(V) adsorption on the composite material is a spontaneous and exothermic *** K-edge XAS results confirmed that the adsorption enhancement on the composite can be attributed to the nanoparticles loaded. In addition, adsorbed As(V) did not get reduced to more toxic As(Ⅲ) and formed a binuclear corner-sharing complex with SPION. The advantageous cube-shape of the sponge-loaded SPION composite together with its high affinity and good adsorption capacity for As(V), good regeneration capability and the enhanceddiffusion attributed to its open-celled structure make this adsorbent a good candidate for industrial applications.

The information about ecological topics of mosquitoes at the southernmost tip of South America is fragmentary and scarce. The present study evaluates lentic freshwater habitat located in the surroundings of main roads of the Argentine sector of Tierra del Fuego as larval habitat of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus, also analyzes the relationships between their presence and several environmental variables: water turbidity, percentage of gramineans, percentage of macrophytes, presence of crustaceous cyanobacteria, and filamentous chlorophyceans. Mosquito inmatures were collected with dip nets. A generalized linear model (GLM) with negative binomial error distribution was used to determine the effects of different variables of the water bodies on abundance of Oc. albifasciatus in the larval habitats. Collections were made in 45 lentic freshwater bodies. Preimaginal stages were found in 17.70% of the studied habitats. Oc. albifasciatus was the only culicid registered. The GLM explained 93.17% of the variability, and showed a negative relationship between the abundances of Oc. albifasciatus and water turbidity, and a positive relationship with percent-age of gramineans. The gramineans would improve food supply, because the plants are providing suitable substrate for different types of microbiota, a layer of leaves would protect eggs from extreme temperatures, and could help the larvae to hide from potential predators. The negative association between abundance of this species with water turbidity could be related to the presence of vegetation that favors retaining the substrate, reducing water turbidity.

Risk Factors for Fall in Elderly Patients:Follow-Up Study after Hospital Discharge

Introduction: Increased occurrences of falls after discharge are reported, especially in elderly people. Falls are a major cause of disability and identification of risk factors associated with falls is required to plan preventive actions. This study aims to determine the occurrence of falls in the three months after discharge and risk factors in elderly patients. Materials and Methods: 100 patients over 65 admitted to an Internal Medicine ward participated. Questionnaires were given during hospitalization and three months after discharge. Follow-up information was unavailable for 31 patients (25 deceased, 6 unreachable). Results: Of those analyzed 52% were males with 80 ± 8.1 years (mean ± SD). Polymedication (p = 0.002), use of psychoactive drugs (p = 0.007), analgesics (p = 0.034) and walking devices (p = 0.006) were associated with a higher incidence of falls 6 months before hospitalization. Post-discharge follow-up was obtained for 69 patients: 18 reported falling during the follow-up. There was a higher risk of fall in patients with a history of falls in the 6 months before admission (p = 0.015 RR = 2.76). Patients who had one or more falls after discharge had a significantly shorter length of hospital stay compared to those who didn’t fall (p = 0.012). In multivariate logistic regression, we found that patients who were hospitalized more than 7 days had a lower risk of falling in the post-discharge period (OR = 0.195, p = 0.017) independently of the history of falls 6 months prior to admission. Conclusions: Further studies are required to validate the risk factors identified after discharge and to evaluate preventive measures. Elderly patients discharged from an Internal Medicine ward should be screened to determine the risk of falls, specifically previous history of falls and medication. These patients should integrate a fall prevention program.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish the differences in the oral health status of adult population between women and men by the clinical status of the permanent first molar. Methods: The data were obtained in a non-random sample of 132,174 patients from a large cohort who were under dental treatment nationwide in Chile during 2011. Results: The results show a greater frequency of “filled and not decayed” (45.6%), “decayed” (18.8%) and followed by “missing by decay” (15.4%). Moreover, an association is established between the “filled and decayed” condition to the female gender and the condition “decayed” and “missing by decay” to the male gender (Significance level α ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: This study concluded that there was a dependent association between gender and the oral health status of permanent first molars in adult patients.

The Liu wei Di Huang wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties,such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging *** influence of an extract of Liu wei Di Huang wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was *** blood(wistar rats) was incubated with the extract,stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium *** were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood *** percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was *** analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(Pwhere the 99mTc would be bound on the blood *** a consequence,precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LwDHw,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models.
