Laparoscopic vs open partial colectomy in elderly patients:Insights from the American College of surgeons- National surgical Quality Improvement Program database

AIM: To compare the outcomes between the laparoscopic and open approaches for partial colectomy in elderly patients aged 65 years and over using the American College of surgeons- National surgical Quality Improvement Program(ACs NsQIP) database. METHODs: The ACs NsQIP database for the years 2005-2011 was queried for all patients 65 years and above who underwent partial colectomy. 1:1 propensity score matching using the nearest- neighbor method was performed to ensure both groups had similar preoperative comorbidities. Outcomes including postoperative complications, length of stay and mortality were compared between the laparoscopic and open groups. χ2 and Fisher's exact test were used for discrete variables and student's t-test for continuous variables. P s considered significant and odds ratios with 95%CI were reported when applicable. REsULTs: The total number of patients in the ACs NsQIP database of the years 2005-2011 was 1777035. We identified 27604 elderly patients who underwent partial colectomy with complete data sets. 12009(43%) of the cases were done laparoscopically and15595(57%) were done with open. After propensity score matching, there were 11008 patients each in the laparoscopic(LC) and open colectomy(OC) cohorts. The laparoscopic approach had lower post-operative complications(LC 15.2%, OC 23.8%, P shorter length of stay(LC 6.61 d, OC 9.62 d, P sION: Even after propensity score matching, elderly patients in the ACs NsQIP database having a laparoscopic partial colectomy had better outcomes than those having open colectomies. In the absence of specific contraindications, elderly patients requiring a partial colectomy should be offered the laparoscopic approach.

Adaptive and scalable load balancing for metadata server cluster in cloud-scale file systems

Big data is an emerging term in the storage indus- try, and it is data analytics on big storage, i.e., Cloud-scale storage. In Cloud-scale （or EB-scale） file systems, load bal- ancing in request workloads across a metadata server cluster is critical for avoiding performance bottlenecks and improv- ing quality of services. Many good approaches have been pro- posed for load balancing in distributed file systems. some of them pay attention to global namespace balancing, making metadata distribution across metadata servers as uniform as possible. However, they do not work well in skew request dis- tributions, which impair load balancing but simultaneously increase the effectiveness of caching and replication, in this paper, we propose Cloud Cache （C2）, an adaptive and scal- able load balancing scheme for metadata server cluster in EB-scale file systems. It combines adaptive cache diffusion and replication scheme to cope with the request load balanc- ing problem, and it can be integrated into existing distributed metadata management approaches to efficiently improve their load balancing performance. C2 runs as follows： 1） to run adaptive cache diffusion first, if a node is overloaded, load- shedding will be used; otherwise, load-stealing will be used; and 2） to run adaptive replication scheme second, if there is a very popular metadata item （or at least two items） causing a node be overloaded, adaptive replication scheme will be used,in which the very popular item is not split into several nodes using adaptive cache diffusion because of its knapsack prop- erty. By conducting performance evaluation in trace-driven simulations, experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of C2.

In this work,we study the performance of one shot and concatenated deleting machines(DMs).We show that the output state of one shot DMs are mixed inseparable,and do not violate Bell's inequality but can be used as a teleportation channel for all values of the input state *** the other hand,we observe in the concatenation of different DMs that the output states are mixed inseparable and do not violate Bell's inequality,and cannot be used as a teleportation ***,some important attributes such as inseparability,violation of Bell's inequality,and teleportation fidelity of the DMs remain unchanged under the order of *** this context of a teleportation channel,one shot DMs are useful when compared to concatenated DMs.

Cloud computing becomes an important application development platform for processing user data with high *** providers are accustomed to providing storage centers outside the trusted location preferred by the data ***,ensuring the security and confidentiality of the data while processing in the centralized network is very *** secured key transmission between the sender and the receiver in the network is a huge challenge in managing most of the sensitive data transmission among the cloud *** are very active over the network like real authenticated user to hack the personal sensitive data,such as bank balance,health data,personal data,and confidential documents over the cloud *** this research,a secured key agreement between the sender and the receiver using Kerberos authentication protocol with fingerprint is proposed to ensure security in *** of patients are monitored using wireless sensor devices and are then transferred to the *** protocol helps in avoiding unnecessary communication of authenticated data over the cloud *** security process is a procedure with the best security in most of the authentication *** node is responsible in carrying data packets from the sender to the receiver in the cloud *** Kerberos protocol is used in trust node to ensure *** communication between the local health center and the healthcare server is ensured by using a fingerprint feature called minutiae form,which refers to the fingerprint image of both sender and *** computational and communicational cost of the proposed system is lesser when compared with other existing authentication methods.

The aim and scope of the present study were to determine the efficacy of UFFA in evaluating the workability,static and dynamic stabilization properties,retention period,and slump loss of sCC systems in their fresh state,as well as their compressive strength at various ***(sEM and XRD)of blended sCC systems were ***,the thermogravimetry behavior of blended sCC specimens were *** to the evaluated results,incorporating up to 20%UFFA into fresh concrete improved its performance due to its engineered fine particle size and spherical geometry,both of which contribute to the enhancement of *** of 25%and 30%of UFFA show effect on the water-binder ratio and chemical enhancer dosage,resulting in a loss of homogeneity in fresh sCC *** reduced particle size,increased amorphous content,and increased surface area all contribute to the pozzolanic reactivity of the early and later ages,resulting in denser packing and thus an increase in compressive *** experimental results indicate that UFFA enhances the properties of sCC in both its fresh and hardened states,which can be attributed to the particles’fineness and their relative effect on sCC.

Free Convective Nonaligned Non-Newtonian Flow with Non-linear Thermal Radiation

The present study explores the free convective oblique Casson fluid over a stretching surface with non-linear thermal radiation effects. The governing physical problem is modelled and transformed into a set of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations by suitable similarity transformation, which are solved numerically with the help of shooting method keeping the convergence control of 10^(-5) in computations. Influence of pertinent physical parameters on normal, tangential velocity profiles and temperature are expressed through graphs. Physical quantities of interest such as skin friction coefficients and local heat flux are investigated numerically.

A modified neural learning algorithm for online resistance estimation in vector controlled induction drives rotor motor

Online estimation of rotor resistance is essen- tial for high performance vector controlled drives. In this paper, a novel modified neural algorithm has been identified for the online estimation of rotor resistance. Neural based estimators are now receiving active con- sideration as they have a number of advantages over conventional techniques. The training algorithm of the neural network determines its learning speed, stability, weight convergence, accuracy of estimation, speed of tracking and ease of implementation. In this paper, the neural estimator has been studied with conventional and proposed learning algorithms. The sensitivity of the rotor resistance change has been tested for a wide range of variation from -50% to ＋50% on the stability of the drive system with and without estimator. It is quiet appealing to settle with optimal estimation time and error for the viable realization. The study is conducted extensively for estimation and tracking. The proposed learning algorithm is found to exhibit good estimation and tracking capabilities. Besides, it reduces computational complexity and, hence, more feasible for practical digital implementa- tion.

synthesis, Characterization, Thermal stability and Antibacterial Activity of Coumarin Based Methacrylate Copolymers

Monomer of 7-methacryloyloxy-4-methylcoumarin （MAOMC） was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Copolymers of MAOMC with butoxyethylmethacrylate （BOEMA） at different feed compositions were prepared by free radical solution polymerization at （70 ± 1） ℃ in ethylmethylketonc （EMK） using benzyl peroxide （BPO） as an initiator. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR and IH-NMR spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis （TGA） and differential scanning calorimetry （DsC） of the copolymers showed moderate thermal stability and higher Tg values. Gel permeation chromatography （GPC） was used to find out the molecular weights of the different copolymers. Antibacterial activities of the copolymers were also investigated against the selected pathogenic bacteria＇s. The antibacterial activity of the copolymer increases as the MAOMC content increases in the copolymer. This shows that coumarin moiety plays a very important role in the antibacterial activity.

FEA-based Geometrical Modification of switched Reluctance Motor for Radial Force Reduction

switched reluctance motors(sRMs)are becoming increasingly popular in the automotive sector owing to their robust ***,sRMs are preferred particularly for EV applications owing to their fault tolerance,magnet-free structure,and high power/torque *** main concerns of sRM compared to other machines include torque ripple and *** primary cause of vibration is the radial force created by the sRM.A geometry-based modification of the sRM to reduce the radial force without significantly changing the average torque produced is *** primary goal is to design a 4-phase,8/6 sRM with a lower radial *** possible geometrical alterations are proposed:one with square windows and the other with circular holes on the rotor *** windows are sized and positioned to avoid flux *** criteria are developed for the optimal window size and *** element analysis(FEA)modelling of the sRM is used to validate its *** FEA results are compared with the performance parameters obtained using the analytical *** the multiphysics design tool ANsYs to obtain the natural frequencies and associated deformations through modal *** to the conventional geometry,the radial force is significantly reduced by providing windows.

Evaluating the effectiveness of marine actinobacterial extract and its mediated titanium dioxide nanoparticles in the degradation of azo dyes

Aim of the present study was to synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles （YiO2 NPs） from marine actinobacteria and to develop an eco-friendly azo-dye degradation method. A total of five actinobacterial isolates were isolated from Chennai marine sediments, Tamilnadu, India and analyzed for the synthesis of TiO2 NPs using titanium hydroxide. Among these, the isolate PsV 3 showed positive results for the synthesis of TiO2 NPs, which was confirmed by UV analysis. Further characterization of the synthesized TiO2 NPs was done using XRD, AFM and FI＇-IR analysis. Actinobacterial crude extract and synthesized TiO2 NPs was found efficient in degrading azo dye such as Acid Red 79 （AR-79） and Acid Red 80 （AR-80）. Degradation percentage was found to be 81% for AR-79, 83% for AR-80 using actinobacterial crude extract and 84% for AR-79, 85% for AR-80 using TiO2 NPs. Immobilized actinobacterial ceils showed 88% for AR-79 and 81% for AR- 80, dye degrading capacity. Degraded components were characterized by FT-IR and GC-Ms analysis. The phytotoxicity test with 500 μg/mL of untreated dye showed remarkable phenotypic as well as cellular damage to Tagetes erecta plant. Comparatively no such damage was observed on plants by degraded dye components. In biotoxicity assay, treated dyes showed less toxic effect as compared to the untreated dyes.
