Repeatability of in-vitro optical quality measurements of intraocular lenses with a deflectometry technique effect of the toricity

AIM： To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device for measuring the Zernike coefficients of toric intraocular lenses（IOLs） and assess whether its toricity has any impact in its repeatability. METHODS： An experienced technician used the NIMO TR1504 to measure the Zernike coefficients 30 times for an aperture of 4.50 mm for all lenses included. The IOLs included were divided into two group： toric and nontoric ones. The cylindrical powers of the toric lenses included in the present study were 1.00, 1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.75 D. Finally, the repeatability of the NIMO TR1504 was described in terms of within subj.ct standard deviation（Sw） and repeatability limit. RESULTS： The Sw was smaller than 0.011 μm for both lens groups and all Zernike coefficients, and the difference between both groups was smaller than 0.004 μm for all Zernike coefficients. Regarding the repeatability limit, this value was smaller than 0.025 μm for the toric lens group, and smaller than 0.031 μm for the non-toric lens one for all Zernike coefficients. Furthermore, the maximum difference between both lens groups was 0.010 μm. CONCLUSION： The repeatability of the NIMO TR1504 to measure the optical quality is high and independent of the lens toricity. These results reflect that this system is robust and could be used to measure the in-vitro optical quality of either toric or non-toric IOLs.

Innovative circular path harvester for mechanical harvesting of irregular and large-canopy olive trees

The harvesting process of the olive tree is mainly performed by manual means,because traditional olive orchards(the main planting typology)are formed of irregular,large-canopy trees that are very difficult to harvest *** that reason,the cost of harvesting is very high,and it threatens the future of these plantations whose conversion to other more modern layouts is not always possible due to several *** introduction of a harvester may represent the technological change that is the key factor for improved *** main purpose of this work was to develop a harvester based on canopy shaker technology for work on irregular,large trees in a circular *** design of the harvester was based on a determination of tree geometry,together with tree *** tests were used to determine machine-tree interaction,and to evaluate the removal,catch frame and driven *** proposed innovation allowed the fully mechanical harvest of previously planted trees with a removal efficiency of over 84%,achieving an effective field capacity of 0.21 hm^(2)/*** the results so far have been promising,further improvements are advisable in machine and tree adaptation.

Comparison between type-2 and type-1 myocardial infarction：clinical features, treatment strategies and outcomes

Obj.ctive To assess the differences in incidence, clinical features, current treatment strategies and outcome in patients with type-2vs. type-1 acute myocardial infarction （AMI）.Methods We included 824 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of type-1 or type-2 AMI. Dur-ing index hospitalization, clinical features and treatment strategies were collected in detail. At 1-year follow-up, mortality, stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction and maj.r bleeding were ***-1 AMI was present in 707 （86%） of the cases while 117 （14%） were classified as type-2. Patients with type-2 AMI were more frequently female and had higher co-morbidities such as diabetes, previous non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndromes, impaired renal function, anaemia, atrial fibrillation and malignancy. However, preserved left ventricular ej.ction fraction and normal coronary arteries were more frequently seen, an invasive treatment was less common, and anti-platelet medications, statins and beta-blockers were less prescribed in patients with type-2 AMI. At 1-year follow-up, type-2 AMI was associated with a higher crude mortality risk （HR： 1.75, 95% CI： 1.14-2.68;P = 0.001）, but this association did not remain significant after multivariable adj.stment （P = 0.785）. Furthermore, we did not find type-2 AMI to be associated with other clinical *** In this real-life population, compared with type-1, type-2 AMI were predominantly women and had more co-morbidities. Invasive treatment strategies and cardioprotective medications were less used in type-2, while the 1-year clinical outcomes were similar.

AIM: To explore the role of the adaptor molecule in liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (PH). METHODS: We used transgenic mice expressing an N-terminal truncated form of MORT1/FADD under the control of the albumin promoter. As previously shown, this transgenic protein abrogated CD95- and CD120a-mediated apoptosis in the liver. Cyclin A expression was detected using Western blotting. ELISA and RT-PCR were used to detect IL-6 and IL-6 mRNA, respectively. DNA synthesis in liver tissue was measured by BrdU staining. RESULTS: Resection of 70% of the liver was followed by a reduced early regenerative response in the transgenic group at 36 h. Accordingly, 36 h after hepatectomy, cyclin A expression was only detectable in wild-type animals. Consequently, the onset of liver mass restoration was retarded as measured by MRI volumetry and mortality was significantly higher in the transgenic group. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate for the first time an involvement of the death receptor molecule MORT1/ FADD in liver regeneration, beyond its well described role as part of the intracellular death signaling pathway.

Exciton Dynamics in Stacked InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Rings Under Resonant Excitation

We report systematic temperature-dependent measurements of photoluminescence spectra in self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs quantum rings (QRs) under resonant excitation condition. We have studied the rise in temperature of the ground-state intensity. The carrier transfer between the ground state of the small ring family towards the big-ring family of the bimodal size distribution is identified by analyzing the photoluminescence spectra. This effect is observed in very thin spacer and under resonant excitation. This situation makes important the lateral tunneling of excitons between rings under low temperatures (10 K). Tunneling time about 1ns was estimated at low temperature and compared to similar carrier transfer in quantum dots (QDs) found in the literature.

Benign retrorectal tumours: Contribution of laparoscopic approach

Introduction: Presacral tumours are extremely rare entities as the asymptomatic retrorectal mass, although its clinical presentation includes infectious complications and signs of malignant degeneration. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most efficient imaging study for its diagnosis. The treatment of choice is complete surgical excision and traditional approaches are mainly through abdominal, posterior and perineal approach, depending on anatomical characteristics of the lesion. Laparoscopic excision of these retrorectal lesions has been reported in a few cases. Patients and methods: We report two cases of 38 and 24-year-old women who complained of anorectal symptoms and were diagnosed as retrorectal tumour by imaging studies. One of them was infected. Both cases were resected by means of laparoscopic techniques. There was no surgical complication and they were discharged on the 3rd and 4th postoperative day, respectively. Histopathologic findings revealed benign cystic teratoma in both cases. A follow-up after 36 months showed no recurrence. Our surgical endoscopic technique and a brief review of perioperative cares are presented and discussed. Discussion: Laparoscopic excision could be indicated in selected retrorectal tumours and a great surgeon’s resolve is always required. A meticulous dissection must be performed in order to identify and preserve vital structures. It’s only absolute contraindications seemed to be the suspicion of malignancy and operative inexperience. Conclusions: The complete laparoscopic removal of presacral lesions is a responsible surgical procedure which offers advantages from the sanitary and aesthetic point of view. This new endoscopic indication could be considered probably as a better technique than open approach in selected patients.
