An application of a genetic algorithm in co-optimization of geological CO2 storage based on artificial neural networks

Global warming, driven by human-induced disruptions to the natural carbon dioxide (CO2) cycle, is a pressing concern. To mitigate this, carbon capture and storage has emerged as a key strategy that enables the continued use of fossil fuels while transitioning to cleaner energy sources. Deep saline aquifers are of particular interest due to their substantial CO2 storage potential, often located near fossil fuel reservoirs. In this study, a deep saline aquifer model with a saline water production well was constructed to develop the optimization workflow. Due to the time-consuming nature of each realization of the numerical simulation, we introduce a surrogate aquifer model derived from extracted data. The novelty of our work lies in the pioneering of simultaneous optimization using machine learning within an integrated framework. Unlike previous studies, which typically focused on single-parameter optimization, our research addresses this gap by performing multi-objective optimization for CO2 storage and breakthrough time in deep saline aquifers using a data-driven model. Our methodology encompasses preprocessing and feature selection, identifying eight pivotal parameters. Evaluation metrics include root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and R-2. In predicting CO2 storage values, RMSE, MAPE and R-2 in test data were 2.07%, 1.52% and 0.99, respectively, while in blind data, they were 2.5%, 2.05% and 0.99. For the CO2 breakthrough time, RMSE, MAPE and R-2 in the test data were 2.1%, 1.77% and 0.93, while in the blind data they were 2.8%, 2.23% and 0.92, respectively. In addressing the substantial computational demands and time-consuming nature of coupling a numerical simulator with an optimization algorithm, we have adopted a strategy in which the trained artificial neural network is seamlessly integrated with a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Low pressure mercury–argon electrodeless fluorescent lamp simulation using the finite volume method

A finite volume model of a low pressure Ar-Hg electrodeless lamp with external coils is established. The physical configuration is similar to the OSRAM/ENDURA 70 W lamp. A Maxwellian energy distribution is assumed. Two dimensional behaviors of the most important plasma parameters such as the electron density, the electron temperature and the most important mercury states are discussed. Results are in good agreement with former studies and the general understanding in this area. Also, the influence of the argon pressure is studied. Based on the simulation, the population of the main resonance state, Hg （63p1） depends on the argon pressure and the optimized value is about 300 mTorr.

A conventional technique for microfluidic droplet generation is Co-axial Flow Focusing(CFF)in which a contraction zone is placed downstream of the dispersed phase *** this contraction zone,the dispersed-phase(dphase)fluid is pinched off by continuous-phase(c-phase)fluid to generate *** the influence of multiple parameters such as the fluids velocities and viscosities,the interfacial tension,and nozzle and orifice diameters on the droplet size is of great importance for the design and application of CFF ***,development of more complete numerical models is *** this paper,we show our model is compatible with experimental data and then numerically investigate the effects of aforementioned parameters on the droplet generation in a CFF microfluidic *** results showed that the c-phase flow rate,viscosity and the interfacial tension had great impacts on the droplet *** effect of the nozzle diameter on the generated droplet size was small compared to that of the orifice in a CFF *** the simulation results,a correlation was also developed and suggested which predicts the droplet size with less than 15%error in a wide range of the introduced dimensionless parameters.

Effect of polarization force on the Jeans instability in collisional dusty plasmas

The Jeans instability in collisional dusty plasmas has been analytically investigated by considering the polarization force effect. Instabilities due to dust-neutral and ion-neutral drags can occur in electrostatic waves of collisional dusty plasmas with self-gravitating particles. In this study, the effect of gravitational force on heavy dust particles is considered in tandem with both the polarization and electrostatic forces. The theoretical framework has been developed and the dispersion relation and instability growth rate have been derived, assuming the plane wave approximation. The derived instability growth rate shows that, in collisional dusty plasmas, the Jeans instability strongly depends on the magnitude of the polarization force.

Analysis of reputation-based mining paradigm under dishonest mining attacks

Since the introduction of Bitcoin,numerous studies on Bitcoin mining attacks have been conducted,and as a result,many countermeasures to these attacks have been *** reputation-based mining paradigm is a comprehensive countermeasure solution to this problem with the goal of regulating the mining process and preventing mining *** is accomplished by incentivizing miners to avoid dishonest mining strategies using reward and punishment *** model was validated solely based on game theoretical analyses,and the real-world implications of this model are not known due to the lack of empirical *** shed light on this issue,we designed a simulated mining platform to examine the effectiveness of the reputation-based mining paradigm through data *** implemented block withholding attacks in our simulation and ran the following three scenarios:Reputation mode,non-reputation mode,and no attack *** comparing the results from these three scenarios,interestingly,we found that the reputation-based mining paradigm decreases the number of block withholding attacks,and as a result,the actual revenue of individual miners becomes closer to their theoretical expected *** addition,we observed that the confidence interval test can effectively detect block withholding attacks;however,the test also results in a small number of false positive *** the effectiveness of the reputation-based model relies on attack detection,further research is needed to investigate the effect of this model on other dishonest mining strategies.

Role of the aperture in Z-scan experiments: A parametric study

In close-aperture Z-scan experiments, a small aperture is conventionally located in the far-field thereby enabling the detection of slight changes in the laser beam profile due to the Kerr-lensing effect. In this work, by numerically solving the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integrals, the amount of transmitted power through apertures has been evaluated and a parametric study on the role of the various parameters that can influence this transmitted power has been done. In order to perform a comprehensive analysis, we have used a nonlinear phase shift optimized for nonlocal nonlinear media in our calculations. Our results show that apertures will result in the formation of symmetrical fluctuations on the wings of Z-scan transmittance curves. It is further shown that the appearance of these fluctuations can be ascribed to the natural diffraction of the Gaussian beam as it propagates up to the aperture plane. Our calculations reveal that the nonlocal parameter variations can shift the position of fluctuations along the optical axis, whereas their magnitude depends on the largeness of the induced nonlinear phase shift. It is concluded that since the mentioned fluctuations are produced by the natural diffraction of the Gaussian beam itself, one must take care not to mistakenly interpret them as noise and should not expect to eliminate them from experimental Z-scan transmittance curves by using apertures with different sizes.

Shallow carbonate deposits(Tarbur Formation)were formed in the Zagros foreland basin with dynamic tectonics during the Maastrichtian *** the viewpoint of reconstruction of depositional conditions in these deposits,studies of biostratigraphy,microfacies,microtaphofacies,and sequence stratigraphy were performed in a single area at Tang-e Shabi Khoon,northwest of *** on the identification of two assemblage zones consisting of benthic foraminifera in these strata,the formation was deposited during the middle to late *** number of cycles in test size and type of coiling in Loftusia decreased from the study area toward the northwest of the Neotethys *** input of clastic sediments affected the distribution of Loftusia and rudists in the study *** microfacies,six microtaphofacies,and one terrigenous facies(shale)were identified based on the sedimentary *** deposits of the middle-late Maastrichtian were deposited on a homoclinal carbonate *** platform can be divided into restricted and semi-restricted lagoon,shoal,and open marine *** the study area,the deposits of the Tarbur Formation were deposited during four third-order depositional *** fault activities affected the formation of depositional sequences in the study area.

The Maastrichtian-Danian in the SW Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt(S. Iran):An Integration of Planktonic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy and Gamma-Ray Spectrometry

In this study, the Maastrichtian-Danian boundary was measured and sampled in two stratigraphic sections, the north and south flanks of the Dehnow anticline in Coastal Fars, Southern Iran. This boundary was also investigated in the drilled exploratory well-1 in the same region. The lithology of the Maastrichtian-Danian deposits consists of glauconitic, phosphatic argillaceous limestones and marlstones. 30 genera and 77 species of planktonic foraminifera have been determined. The recognized biozones are the Gansserina gansseri Interval Zone, and the Contusotruncana contusa Interval Zone, which indicates latest Campanian to middle Maastrichtian age for the upper part of the Gurpi Formation. In addition, the Eoglobigerina edita(P1) Partial Range Zone, Praemurica uncinata(P2) Lowest Occurrence Zone, Morozovella angulata(P3) Lowest Occurrence Zone and Globanomalina psudomenardii(P4) Taxon Range Zone represent a Danian to Thanetian age for the lower part of the Pabdeh Formation. From the absence of the Abathomphalus mayaroensis Interval Zone, Pseudoguembelina hariaensis Interval Zone, Pseudotextularia elegans Interval Zone, Plummerita hantkeninoides Interval Zone, Guembelitria cretacea(P0) Partial Range Zone and Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina(Pα) Total Range Zone, it can be deduced that there is a paraconformity across the Maastrichtian–Danian boundary in the studied area, this hiatus encompassing the late Maastrichtian and the earliest Danian. Danian deposits from the study area contain reworked glauconitized macrofossils, planktonic and benthic foraminifera of the Cretaceous. The obtained surface gamma-ray spectrometry logs resemble the exploratory well-1 gamma-ray wireline log.

Effects of the porous medium and water-silver biological nanofluid on the performance of a newly designed heat sink by using first and second laws of thermodynamics

The aim of this numerical investigation is to evaluate the laminar forced convection of biologically synthesized water-silver nanofluid through a heat sink(HS)filled with porous foam(PHS)using first and second laws of *** impacts of inlet velocity(V=0.5–3 m·s^-1)and volume fraction of nanofluid(φ=0–1%)on the performance metrics of HS are assessed and the outcomes are compared with those of the non-porous HS(NHS).The outcomes revealed that for both the PHS and NHS,the increase of V causes an intensification in convection coefficient,pumping power,and entropy generation due to fluid friction,while the maximum CPU temperature,thermal resistance,and entropy generation due to the heat transfer reduces by boosting ***,it was found that the augmentation of V results in intensification in convection coefficient,pumping power,overall hydrothermal performance,and frictional entropy generation,while the opposite is true for maximum CPU temperature,thermal resistance,and thermal entropy ***,it was reported that,except forφ=0.5%,the overall hydrothermal performance of NHS is better than that of PHS,while PHS has better second-law performance than NHS in all the studied ***,it can be concluded that the best hydrothermal performance for PHS belongs toφ=1%and V=0.5 m·s^-1,while for NHS,these values are 1%and 2 m·s^-1.
