Optimum conditions for in vitro production of interleukin 2 (IL 2) like activity from the Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of an Indian major carp, Labeo rohita were studied. Culture supernatants were g.nerated by culturing.the PBL in RPMI-1640 media supplemented with g.utamine and 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and stimulating.with two different mitog.ns: concanavalin A (Con A) and Phytohaemag.lutinin (PHA) at different concentrations separately. Sig.ificantly (P ≤ 0.01) hig.er proliferation response was obtained from the culture supernatant stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) at a concentration of 10 μg.mL-1. The effect of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) was also studied by co-stimulating.PBL with Con A and PHA separately and it was found to synerg.stically enhancing.the stimulation index with Con A whereas the stimulation index remain unchang.d with PHA. The Con A (10 μg.mL-1) stimulated PBL were also cultured at different cell density, incubation period and incubation temperature in order to optimize the in vitro L. rohita IL2 production. The IL2 like activity was studied by lymphocyte proliferation assay on 72 h Con A blasts using.WST based assay technique. Sig.ificantly (P ≤ 0.01) hig.er stimulation indices were obtained when the PBL were cultured at a cell density of 1 × 106 cells mL-1 for 30-36 h at an incubation temperature of 30 ?C. The IL2 like activity was purified by DEAE-Sepharose anion exchang. chromatog.aphy and recorded between 70-130 mM NaCl with peak activity at 110 Mm NaCl. The molecular weig.t of the factor responsible for IL2 like activity was found to be 15-17 KD.

Use of a Standing.Desk Increases Energ. Expenditure in Obese but Not Normal Weig.t Subjects

Backg.ound: The use of standing.desks has been associated with g.eater metabolic cost as compared to traditional seated desks. However, it is unclear as to the metabolic impact of standing.desks in normal weig.t versus obese men and women. Methods: We compared the metabolic cost of using.a standing.and seated desk in 14 obese and 19 normal weig.t men and women. Subjects reported to the lab on a sing.e occasion and participated in two, 30-minute sessions of standing.and seated desk work (i.e., typing., in random order. Expired g.ses were collected during.the 2-hour period and calorie expenditure was estimated using.indirect calorimetry. Results: We noted a sig.ificant (p = 0.013) increase in energ. expenditure of 7.4 kcal•30 minutes−1 (+14.7%) during.standing.as compared to seated for the obese g.oup. No sig.ificant difference in energ. expenditure was noted for the normal weig.t g.oup (p = 0.674). A condition effect was noted for heart rate and diastolic blood pressure, with standing.being.sig.ificantly hig.er than seated for both variables (p 0.05). Conclusion: The use of a standing.desk modestly increases energ. expenditure in obese subjects but does not have the same effect in those of normal weig.t. It is unknown whether the increased energ. expenditure would be maintained over time in the obese subjects/individuals, as they may adapt to the standing.position. Moreover, if normal weig.t individuals choose a standing.desk, they should do so for reasons unrelated to increased energ. expenditure (e.g., improved spine health, g.eater feeling.of productivity).

Cystic ovarian disease (COD) is one of the main causes of infertility in dairy cattle and has a hig. economic impact on farmers. COD is caused by an endocrine imbalance within the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis preventing.the mature g.aafian follicle from ovulating. The cause at the molecular level is not well understood. However, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and plasminog.n activator/plasmin families of extracellular (ECM) matrix-deg.ading.proteinases are involved in g.aafian follicle breakdown and oocyte release in the ovulation process. Our research investig.ted the possibility of using.plasma concentrations of MMP-2 and -9 and their natural tissue inhibitors (TIMP) -1 and -2 as prog.ostic indicators of COD. Plasma samples from cystic and non-cystic dairy cows were analyzed using.ELISA. Althoug. plasma concentrations of MMP-2 and -9 were g.eater and TIMP-2 was lower in non-cystic compared to cystic cows, no sig.ificant differences were observed in MMP-2 and -9 and TIMP-1 and -2 due to cyst status. However, the TIMP-1:MMP-9 and TIMP-2:MMP-2 molar ratios were g.eater, (P = 0.099) and (P = 0.038), respectively, in cystic compared to non-cystic cows, sug.esting.a proteolytic insufficiency in cows with COD that may be a contributing.factor to the anovulatory patholog.. These data may provide the g.oundwork for future research and development of tools for dairy farmers to selectively choose replacement heifers less likely to develop COD.

This paper investig.tes the impacts of forest cover and spatial structure chang.s on the forest landscape across Afi-Mbe-Okwang.o protected area of Cross River State, Nig.ria and its corresponding.implication on two endang.red primates (Cross River g.rilla and Nig.ria-Cameroon Chimpanzee) habitat using.satellite remote sensing.and modeling.techniques. Using.remote sensing.chang. detection analysis, the spatial extent and annual rate of deforestation for the study area was determined as 34,620 hectares and 1.5% respectively (from 2000 to 2014). The protected areas with hig.est annual deforestation rates were Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary (2.6%) and Mbe Mountains (2.2%), both prominent for g.rilla and chimpanzee sig.ting. and nests. Further investig.tions on chang.s to the forest landscape structure revealed hig. levels of forest frag.entation across the study area for the 14-year period investig.ted. As a means of further understanding.effects of forest landscapes chang.s across the study area, a 14-year forward simulation was performed using.the Markov model as to determine the spatial extent of futuristic forest cover chang.s. The results showed that if this current trend of forest cover chang. continued, 28,121 hectares of forests would be lost to deforestation in 2028 (approximately 16% of the total landmass of the entire study area). Using.Maxent modeling. suitable primate habitats were predicted and the total coverag. determined as 30,940 hectares (54.4% situated in CRNP—Okwang.o division, 29.4% in AMWS, 14.3% in Mbe Mountains and 1.9% in ARFR). Further analysis revealed 6468 hectares of predicted primate habitat were affected by deforestation in 2014 (21% of the predicted primate habitats). These results indicate that suitable primate habitats (particularly for g.rillas and chimpanzees) are under immense pressure from deforestation and forest frag.entation. This paper presents a cost effective and time saving.approach for determining.suitable primate habitat

With g.adually diminishing.Fe g.ade in tandem with the ever-increasing.demand for hig.-g.ade iron ores,iron ore industries are now focusing.on the beneficiation of low-g.ade iron ore fines,mainly considered ***,the scarcity of water at many of the mines’sites and the new water conservation policies of the g.vernments have necessitated research on suitable dry beneficiation *** this context,an effort has been made to evaluate the efficacy of a dry classification unit,such as the VSK separator,in upg.ading.the iron values of two low-g.ade Indian iron ore fines,named Sample 1 and Sample *** mineralog.cal studies,involving.scanning.electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction,sug.est that Sample 1 is a low-g.ade blue dust sample(51.2wt%Fe)containing.hematite and quartz as the major minerals,while Sample 2(53.3wt%Fe)shows the presence of g.ethite in addition to hematite and *** experiments,carried out using.Box-Benkhen statistical desig.,indicate that blower speed,followed by feed rate,is the most influencing.operating.parameter in obtaining.a g.od product in the VSK *** optimum levels of the operating.factors,a fines product with~55wt%Fe at a yield of~40%can be obtained from Sample 1,while Sample 2 can be upg.aded to~56wt%Fe at a yield of~85%.The results sug.est that the VSK separator can be employed as an efficient intermediate unit operation in a processing.circuit to upg.ade the iron contents of iron ore fines.

Simazine and propazine are selective triazine herbicides currently in use to control broad-leaved weeds and annual g.asses around the world. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used in the production of polycarbonate plastics often found in consumer g.ods, such as plastic containers, baby bottles etc. These synthetic compounds are known to increase the risk of cancer, cause adverse reproductive effect in reptiles, mammals, birds, humans, and lead to other health problems. They have become some of the principal ag.nts of contamination in water bodies around the world throug. herbicide runoff, industrial waste and leaching. Some triazines such as atrazine are banned in most European countries for over ten years due to their adverse reproductive effect in mammals, birds and humans;however propazine and simazine are still in use around the world. The removal of these compounds from contaminated water is an exig.nt challeng.. In this study, we investig.ted their affinity for the surface of nanoparticles (NPS) and standard metallic oxides in an effort to exploit the unique potential applications of NPS for water purification systems. We studied the adsorption of the two triazines and BPA on the surface of NPS of iron (III) oxide, NPS of carbon, bulk iron (III) oxide and aluminum oxide at pH 6 and pH 8 using.UV-Visible spectroscopy. Result indicates that these compounds have different affinity towards the surface of metallic oxides and carbon at various pHs. In g.neral, there is relatively hig. adsorption of some of these compounds on the surface of NPS compared to bulk particles. NPS of carbon have shown the hig.est affinity for all the three compounds. The lower pH was found to be favorable for all of the compounds except for BPA. BPA have shown hig. adsorption at pH 8 than at pH 6.
