Packed Bed Thermocline Thermal Energy Storage for Medium-Temperature Concentrating Solar Systems: Numerical and Experimental Study

Thermal Energy Storage is becoming a necessary component of sustainable energy production systems as it helps alleviate intrinsic limitations of Renewable Energy Sources, such as intermittent use and mismatch between power demand and supply. This paper discusses a packed bed thermocline tank as a thermal energy storage solution. Firstly, this paper presents the development of a numerical model calculating heat transfers within the tank, based on a discretization over several nodes and the nodal formulation of the heat balance equation. The model considers a filler material and a heat transferring fluid and uses the finite difference method to calculate the temperature evolution of the two media across the tank. The model was validated with two different packed bed systems from the literature during a discharging process, presenting a good fit with the experimental results. Secondly, the experimental packed bed is presented and characterized for a charging cycle from ambient temperature to approximately 180?C. The charging experiment was accurately reproduced with the numerical model requiring minimal computational time. Two additional charging modes were simulated with different inlet HTF conditions: constant temperature and varying temperature following the profile produced by a thermal solar collector field. The temperature profiles obtained from the three charging modes were analysed and compared to each other. The proposed numerical and experimental tools will be used in future studies for a better understanding of the design and operating conditions of packed bed thermal energy storage systems.

In this study, we investigated the performance improvement caused by the addition of copper(Cu)nanoparticles to high-density polyethylene(HDPE) matrix material. Composite materials, with filler percentages of 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 wt% were synthesized through the material extrusion(MEX)3D printing technique. The synthesized nanocomposite filaments were utilized for the manufacturing of specimens suitable for the experimental procedure that followed. Hence, we were able to systematically investigate their tensile, flexural, impact, and microhardness properties through various mechanical tests that were conducted according to the corresponding standards. Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy was used to investigate the electrical/dielectric properties of the composites. Moreover, by employing means of Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) we were also able to further investigate their vibrational, structural, and thermal properties. Concomitantly, means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM), as well as atomic force microscopy(AFM), were used for the examination of the morphological and structural characteristics of the synthesized specimens, while energy-dispersive Xray spectroscopy(EDS) was also performed in order to receive a more detailed picture on the structural characteristics of the various synthesized composites. The corresponding nanomaterials were also assessed for their antibacterial properties regarding Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) and Escherichia coli(E. coli) with the assistance of a method named screening agar well diffusion. The results showed that the mechanical properties of HDPE benefited from the utilization of Cu as a filler, as they showed a notable improvement. The specimen of HDPE/Cu 4.0 wt% was the one that presented the highest levels of reinforcement in four out of the seven tested mechanical properties(for example, it exhibited a 36.7%improvement in the flexural strength, compared to the pure matrix). Sedimentary facies analysis of a high-frequency,small-scale,peritidal carbonate sequence in the Lower Jurassic of the Tripolis carbonate unit (central western Crete,Greece):Long-lasting emergence and fossil laminar dolocretes horizons

Abstract The study examines a Lower Jurassic （late Liassic） cyclic lagoonal-peritidal stratigraphic unit outcropping in central western Crete （Tripolis unit）, which corresponds to the eastern （internal） part of the mainland Gavrovo-Tripotis platform, the most significant external platform of the Hetlenides. The studied Tripolis carbonate sequence consists of meter-scale, shallowing-upward successions of restricted inner- carbonate platform facies, including cyclically repeated subtidal, intertidal and supratidal facies, that are separated by erosion surfaces （elementary cycles）. Each cycle starts with relatively open-marine facies, which are overlain by shallower, more restricted facies （tidal fiat progradation）. The lithofacies association includes dotomitic intraclastic-peloidal-bioclastic wackestones-packstones/floatstones and grainstones/rudstones dominated by a restricted shallow-marine fauna （bivalves, gastropods, ostracods and seldom benthic fora- minifers）, representing a shaUow subtidal to intertidal, moderately high-energy environment within an inner- platform setting （peritidal environment to restricted lagoon）. This lithofacies association has been intermit- tently subaeriaUy exposed and has undergone diagenetic processes in an inter- or supratidal environment, exhibiting features of vadose diagenesis and pedogenesis due to long-lasting exposure along certain horizons. The peritidat facies are capped by dolocretes controlled by root-activities （laminar dolocretes, petoi- dat-pisoid dolocretes and massive dotocretes）, marking the end of each depositional cycle, and, thus, dis- tinguishing the successive episodes of a prolonged subaerial exposure period and birth of pateosol horizons. Mechanisms of resistance to anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody treatment in metastatic colorectal cancer

Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) continues to be counted as a major health problem. The introduction of newer cytotoxics, irinotecan and oxaliplatin, has achieved a significant improvement in survival rates. Novel targeted therapies (bevacizumab, and cetux-imab) in combination with most efficient chemotherapy regimens have pushed the median survival beyond the 2-year mark and increased the proportion of patients which could benefit from resection of metastatic lesions. In addition, several studies have proved that the CRC mutation profiles should influence patient selection or stratif ication in prospective trials. KRAS mutational status represents a paradigm for biomarker development in the era of molecular targeted therapies. The present article is an overview of the most important studies in the development of biomarkers for the optimization of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (anti-EGFR) treatment in mCRC, beyond KRAS mutations, which is a work in progress. The aim will be to identify molecular markers that might be used to select patients with a higher probability of response to anti-EGFR monoclonal antibodies. Overall the accumulating evidence of the molecular biology of CRC has substantially changed the approach to mCRC treatment and has given clinicians more rational options for treating this illness.

The growing importance of the service economy during the last 40 years has raised the need for new tools for designing and managing services. As a result, several authors have developed service classification systems, in order to better understand the nature of service operations and provide methods and tools to improve service efficiency and quality. This paper exploits the work resulting from service classification systems and identifies the principal attributes to be considered in service management. The tool introduced for this purpose is the Service Attribute-Process Matrix （SAPM）, which uses selected results from existing service classification schemes to investigate the importance of the significant service attributes to major processes of the service life cycle.

Observations of kinetic Alfvén waves by THEMIS near a substorm onset

Low frequency electromagnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of a magnetospheric substorm onset were investigated using simultaneous observations by THEMIS multiple probes in the near-Earth plasma sheet in the *** observations indicate that in the vicinity of a substorm onset,kinetic Alfvén waves can be excited in the high-βplasma sheet(β=2μ0nT/B 2 ,the ratio of plasma thermal pressure to magnetic pressure)within the near-Earth *** kinetic Alfvén wave has a small spatial scale in the high-β*** parallel electric field accompanying kinetic Alfvén waves accelerates the charged particles along the magnetic *** kinetic Alfvén waves play an important role in the substorm trigger process,and possibly in the formation of a substorm current wedge.

Role of Kupffer cells in the pathogenesis of liver disease

Kupffer cells, the resident liver macrophages have long been considered as mostly scavenger cells responsible for removing particulate material from the portal circulation. However, evidence derived mostly from animal models, indicates that Kupffer cells may be implicated in the pathogenesis of various liver diseases including viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, intrahepatic cholostasis, activation or rejection of the liver during liver transplantation and liver fibrosis. There is accumulating evidence, reviewed in this paper, suggesting that Kupffer cells may act both as effector cells in the destruction of hepatocytes by produdng harmful soluble mediators as well as antigen presenting cells during viral infections of the liver. Moreover they may represent a significant source of chemoattractant molecules for cytotoxic CD8 and regulatory T cells. Their role in fibrosis is well established as they are one of the main sources of TGFβ1 production, which leads to the transformation of stellate cells into myofibroblasts. Whether all these variable functions in the liver are mediated by different Kupffer cell subpopulations remains to be evaluated. In this review we propose a model that demonstrates the role of Kupffer cells in the pathogenesis of liver disease.

Permeability in Flysch-Distribution Decrease with Depth and Grout Curtains Under Dams

A considerable number of in situ permeability tests in flysch are processed to a depth of 120m with a good spatial distribution. The distribution of permeability values for the different litho-types of this formation, their comparison and their decrease with depth is discussed. The depth where a permeability of 3 to 5×10-7m/sec can be retained (the limit of a reasonable grouting under a high dam) may be twofold if the geological history of the formation could not contain a compressional tectonic process. This depth may reach 100m in some cases. The differences in the mean values of permeability among the various litho-types are minor, while the presence of siltstones, always present although with varied participation, dramatically controls the global permeability.
