Height-diameter models for King Boris fir(Abies borisii regis Mattf.) and Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris l.) in Olympus and Pieria Mountains, Greece

In forest science and practice, the total tree height is one of the basic morphometric attributes at the tree level and it has been closely linked with important stand attributes. In the current research, sixteen nonlinear functions for height prediction were tested in terms of their fitting ability against samples of Abies borisii regis and Pinus sylvestris trees from mountainous forests in central Greece. The fitting procedure was based on generalized nonlinear weighted regression. At the final stage, a five-quantile nonlinear height-diameter model was developed for both species through a quantile regression approach, to estimate the entire conditional distribution of tree height, enabling the evaluation of the diameter impact at various quantiles and providing a comprehensive understanding of the proposed relationship across the distribution. The results clearly showed that employing the diameter as the sole independent variable, the 3-parameter Hossfeld function and the 2-parameter N?slund function managed to explain approximately 84.0% and 81.7% of the total height variance in the case of King Boris fir and Scots pine species, respectively. Furthermore, the models exhibited low levels of error in both cases(2.310m for the fir and 3.004m for the pine), yielding unbiased predictions for both fir(-0.002m) and pine(-0.004m). Notably, all the required assumptions for homogeneity and normality of the associated residuals were achieved through the weighting procedure, while the quantile regression approach provided additional insights into the height-diameter allometry of the specific species. The proposed models can turn into valuable tools for operational forest management planning, particularly for wood production and conservation of mountainous forest ecosystems.

The treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer including timing and dosage of radiotherapy, degree of sphincter preservation with neoadjuvant radiotherapy, and short and long term effects of radiotherapy are controversial topics. The MEDlINE, Cochrane library databases, and meeting proceedings from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, were searched for reports of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses comparing neoadjuvant and adjuvant radiotherapy with surgery to surgery alone for rectal cancer. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy shows superior results in terms of local control compared to adjuvant radiotherapy. Neither adjuvant or neoadjuvant radiotherapy impacts overall survival. Short course versus long course neoadjuvant radiotherapy remains controversial. There is insufficient data to conclude that neoadjuvant therapy improves rates of sphincter preserving surgery. Radiation significantly impacts anorectal and sexual function and includes both acute and long term toxicity. Data demonstrate that neoadjuvant radiation causes less toxicity compared to adjuvant radiotherapy, and specifically short course neoadjuvant radiation results in less toxicity than long course neoadjuvant radiation. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy is the preferred modality for administering radiation in locally advanced rectal cancer. There are significant side effects from radiation, including anorectal and sexual dysfunction, which may be less with short course neoadjuvant radiation.

AIM:To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of our new cytoreductive surgery(CRS)and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion(HIPEC)***:Retrospective review of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies who were suitable candidates for CRS and HIPEC between 12/1/2009 and 10/1/*** clinicopathologic data were reviewed with a special focus on the surgical outcome and the postoperative morbidity and ***:Fourteen patients were *** age was 64 years;seven were *** primary tumors were:colonic(29%),appendiceal(36%),peritoneal mesothelioma(14%),gastric(7%),adenocarcinoma of unknown primary(7%),and gastrointestinal stromal tumor(7%).Eleven patients(79%)received CRS/HIPEC,three for *** patients that did not undergo CRS/HIPEC had an average peritoneal cancer index(PCI)of *** eight patients that underwent curative CRS/HIPEC had an average PCI of 10 and a completeness of cytoreduction score of 0(87.5%) or 1(12.5%).Postoperative morbidity was 36%;the worst adverse event was Grade 3 *** rate was 0%.CONClUSION:CRS with HIPEC is safe and feasible at tertiary institutions with fledgling *** is an accurate predictor of surgical outcomes.

AIM: To unravel the differences between systematic in- flammatory response syndrome (SIRS) of acute pancre- atitis compared to the same syndrome in sepsis. METHODS: Twenty-five patients were enrolled, 12 with sepsis and 13 acute pancreatitis. After diagnosis 20 ml blood was sampled. Half were assayed for isolation of monocytes and 10 ml was centrifuged for serum test of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin-6 (Il-6). Half of monocytes were incubated in the presence of patients’ serum and supernatants were collected. The other half was treated for estimation of optical photom- etry under caspase-3 inhibition. TNFα and Il-6 were es- timated by an enzyme immunoassay. RESUlTS: median ± SE of serum Il-6 in septic patients and acute pancreatitis patients was 192.30 ± 35.40 ng/l and 21.00 ± 16.05 ng/l, respectively (P lues of caspase-3 were 0.94 ± 0.17 pmol/min 104 cells and 0.34 ± 0.09 pmol/min 104 cells (P l-6 of monocyte supernatants of patients with sepsis was significantly increased after addition of patients’ serum, while that of patients with acute pancreatitis did not show significant difference. CONClUSION: The data have shown that monocyte activity is different between acute pancreatitis and sepsis. This phenomenon might be explained as a different pathway to the pro-inflammatory cytokines release or could be a novel anti-inflammatory response in acute pancreatitis.
