Isolated sacral injuries: Postoperative length of stay, complications, and readmission

AIM: To investigate inpatient length of stay(LOS), complication rates, and readmission rates for sacral fracture patients based on operative ***: All patients who presented to a large tertiary care center with isolated sacral fractures in an 11-year period were included in a retrospective chart review. Operative approach(open reduction internal fixation vs percutaneous) was noted, as well as age, gender, race, and American Society of Anesthesiologists' score. Complications included infection, nonunion and malunion, deep venous thrombosis, and hardware problems; 90-d readmissions were broken down into infection, surgical revision of the sacral fracture, and medical complications. LOS was collected for the initial admission and readmission visits if applicable. Fisher's exact and non-parametric t-tests(Mann-Whitney U tests) were employed to compare LOS, complications, and readmissions between open and percutaneous ***: Ninety-four patients with isolated sacral fractures were identified: 31(30.4%) who underwentopen reduction and internal fixation(ORIF) vs 63(67.0%) who underwent percutaneous fixation. There was a significant difference in LOS based on operative approach: 9.1 d for ORIF patients vs 6.1 d for percutaneous patients(P = 0.043), amounting to a difference in cost of $13590. Ten patients in the study developed complications, with no significant difference in complication rates or reasons for complications between the two groups(19.4% for ORIF patients vs 6.3% for percutaneous patients). Eight patients were readmitted, with no significant difference in readmission rates or reasons for readmission between the two groups(9.5% percutaneous vs 6.5% ORIF).CONCLUSION: There is a significant difference in LOS based on operative approach for sacral fracture patients. Given similar complications and readmission rates, we recommend a percutaneous approach.

WO_(3) passivation layer-coated nanostructured TiO_(2): An efficient defect engineered photoelectrode for dye sensitized solar cell

Major loss factors for photo-generated electrons due to the presence of surface defects in titanium dioxide(Ti O_2)were controlled by RF-sputtered tungsten trioxide(WO_3) passivation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy assured the coating of WO3 on the Ti O_2 nanoparticle layer by showing Ti 2 p, W 4 f and O 1 s characteristic peaks and were further confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. The coating of WO_3 on the Ti O_2 nanoparticle layer did not affect dye adsorption significantly. Dye sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) fabricated using WO_3-coated Ti O_2 showed an enhancement of ~10% compared to DSSCs fabricated using pristine Ti O_2-based photo-electrodes. It is attributed to the WO_3 passivation on Ti O_2 that creates an energy barrier which favored photo-electron injection by tunneling but blocked reverse electron recombination pathways towards holes available in highest occupied molecular orbital of the dye molecules. It was further evidenced that there is an optimum thickness(duration of coating) of WO_3 to improve the DSSC performance and longer duration of WO_3 suppressed photo-electron injection from dye to Ti O_2 as inferred from the detrimental effect in short circuit current density values. RF-sputtering yields pinhole-free,highly uniform and conformal coating of WO_3 onto any area of interest, which can be considered for an effective surface passivation for nanostructured photovoltaic devices.

Steam as coolant and lubricant in turning of metal matrix composites

Green cutting has become focus of attention in ecological and environmental protection. Steam is cheap, poilution-free and eco-friendly, and then is a good and economical coolant and lubricant. Steam generator and steam feeding system were developed to generate and feed steam. Comparative experiments were carried out in cutting AA6061-15 vol.% SiC （25 p.m particle size）, with cubic boron nitride （CBN） insert KB-90 grade under the conditions of compressed air, oil water emulsion, steam as coolant and lubricant, and dry cutting, respectively. The experimental results show that, with steam as coolant and lubricant, gradual reduction in the cutting force, friction coefficient, surface roughness and cutting temperature values were observed. Further, there was reduction in built up edge formation. It is proved that use of water steam as coolant and lubricant is environmentally friendly.

Effect of metal fluorides on chromium ions doped bismuth borate glasses for optical applications

Fluoride based glasses with composition CaF_2-ZnF_2-Bi_2 O_3-B_2 O_3 doped with chromium ions have been investigated using physical, optical, electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), and Raman studies. The amorphous nature of samples was confirmed from x-ray diffraction spectra. The density is evaluated from the Archimedes principle and the values of optical band gap and Urbach energy values were evaluated from the optical absorption spectra. Thus, molar volume, refractive index, etc., were also evaluated. The observed decrease in density and the optical band gap with CaF2 is explained using the crystalline density of metal fluorides and the ionicity of fluorine ions,respectively. The three peaks near 450 nm, 606 nm, and 720 nm, which are shown in the absorption spectra, are accredited to ~4 A)(2 g) → ~4 T_(1 g), ~4 A_(2 g)→ ~4 T_(2 g), ~4 A_(2 g)→~2 E transitions, respectively. Resonance signals at g≈ 4.82 and g≈ 1.99 were observed in EPR spectra which are assigned. FTIR and Raman analysis were carried out to examine the impact of metal fluorides on the structure of bismuth borate glasses.

Magnetorheological(MR)fluid damper which allows the damping characteristics of the damper to be continuously controlled by varying the magnetic field is extensively used in metal cutting to suppress tool *** though magnetorhelogical fluids have been successful in reducing tool vibration,durability of magnetorhelogical fluids remains a major challenge in engineering *** effect on the performance of magnetorhelogical fluids over a prolonged period of time is a major *** this paper,an attempt was made to reduce temperature and to improve viscosity of magnetorhelogical fluids by infusing nanoparticles along with MR *** oxide and titanium oxide nanoparticles of 0.1%and 0.2%concentration by weight were considered and experimental tests were conducted to study the influence of nanoparticles on the performance of magnetorheological *** the experimental results it was observed that the presence of nanoparticles in MR fluid reduces temperature and increases the viscosity of MR fluid thereby increasing the cutting performance during turning of hardened AISI 4340 steel.

Floral extract of Tecoma stans:A potent inhibitor of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in vivo

Objective:To highlight the nephroprotective activity of ethyl acetate extract of dried flowers of Tecomu stans for its protective effects on genlamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in albino rats. Methods:For studying acute toxicity study,single oral dose of 5（KM） mg ethyl acetate floral extract/kg hodv weight was administered to albino rats（five females,five males）.Nephrotoxicity was induced in albino rats by intraperitoneal administration of gentamicin 80 mg/kg/day for eight *** of concurrent administration of ethyl acetate floral extract of Tecoma stans at a dose of 100.200 and 300 mg/kg/day given by oral mute was determined using serum creatinine,serum uric acid,blood urea nitrogen and serum urea as indicators of kidney *** study groups contained six rats in each *** nephrotoxicity of gentamicin is known to involve induction of oxidative stress,in vitro antioxidant aclivity and free radical-scavenging activity of this extract was also ***:For acute toxicity testing both female and male rats administered with the extract at a dose of 5 000 mg/*** results showed no toxicity in terms of general behavior change,mortality,or change in gross appearance of internal organs(LD50>5 000 mg/kg). Magnesium alloys containing biocompatible components show tremendous promise for applications as temporary biomedical devices. However, to ensure their safe use as biodegradeable implants, it is essential to control their corrosion rates. In concentrated Mg alloys, a microgalvanic coupling between the α-Mg matrix and secondary precipitates exists which results in increased corrosion rate. To address this challenge, we engineered the microstructure of a biodegradable Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloy by friction stir processing (FSP), improving its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties simultaneously. The FS processed alloy with refined grains and broken and uniformly distributed secondary precipitates showed a relatively uniform corrosion morphology accompanied with the formation of a stable passive layer on the alloy surface. In vivo corrosion evaluation of the processed alloy in a small animal model showed that the material was well-tolerated with no signs of inflammation or harmful by-products. Remarkably, the processed alloy supported bone until it healed till eight weeks with a low in vivo corrosion rate of 0.7 mm/year. Moreover, we analyzed blood and histology of the critical organs such as liver and kidney, which showed normal functionality and consistent ion and enzyme levels, throughout the 12- week study period. These results demonstrate that the processed Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloy offers promising potential for osseointegration in bone tissue healing while also exhibiting controlled biodegradability due to its engineered microstructure. The results from the present study will have profound benefit for bone fracture management, particularly in pediatric and elderly patients.

Bio-inspired carbon electro-catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

We report the synthesis, characterisation and catalytic performance of two nature-inspired biomassderived electro-catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. The catalysts were prepared via pyrolysis of a real food waste（lobster shells） or by mimicking the composition of lobster shells using chitin and CaCO3 particles followed by acid washing. The simplified model of artificial lobster was prepared for better reproducibility. The calcium carbonate in both samples acts as a pore agent, creating increased surface area and pore volume, though considerably higher in artificial lobster samples due to the better homogeneity of the components. Various characterisation techniques revealed the presence of a considerable amount of hydroxyapatite left in the real lobster samples after acid washing and a low content of carbon（23%）, nitrogen and sulphur（〈1%）, limiting the surface area to 23 m^2/g, and consequently resulting in rather poor catalytic activity. However, artificial lobster samples, with a surface area of ≈200 m^2/g and a nitrogen doping of 2%, showed a promising onset potential, very similar to a commercially available platinum catalyst, with better methanol tolerance, though with lower stability in long time testing over 10,000 s.
