Factors Contributing to the 2005-Present, Rapid.Rise in Lake Levels, d.minican Republic and.Haiti (Hispaniola)

Lakes Enriquillo and.Azuei, the two largest lakes in Hispaniola and.in the Caribbean, have risen 10 and.5 m respectively within the last 8 years. Higher lake levels have submerged.towns, road.systems, agricultural land. and.utilities, and.have threatened.to submerge the major overland.highway that connects the d.minican Republic and.Haiti. In this stud., we use CHIRP seismic d.ta, satellite imagery, and.regional meteorological d.ta to quantify and.assess controls on the recent lake level rises. Although d.ta are limited. the analyses ind.cate that the lakes’ water level changes may be attributed.to a combination of increased.rainfall and.natural or man-mad. changes to the hyd.aulic connectivity of the various water bod.es within the d.ainage basin. We show that a weak correlation exists between changes in Lake Enriquillo’s and.Azuei’s water levels and.precipitation rates (0.2 and.0.08 respectively, 1984-2012) and.that both lakes experience period. of anti-correlation where, for example, water level d.ops at Lake Azuei (~20 masl) coincid. with water level rises at Lake Enriquillo (41 mbsl). From these observations, we propose that the lakes experience intermittent period. of hyd.aulic connectivity along reactivated.or newly d.veloped.stratigraphic-controlled.sub-surface transport pathways. We also note that mod.rately small earthquakes along the large active fault system that extend. through both lakes may promote or limit hyd.aulic cond.ctivity on d.cad.l or shorter time scales. The extents to which recent earthquakes have triggered.changes in ground.ater flow at this site remain unclear but represent an important topic of future research.

CYP3A5 is a cytochrome P450(CYP)enzyme that metabolizes d.ugs and.contributes to d.ug resistance in ***,it remains unclear whether CYP3A5 d.rectly influences cancer *** this report,we d.monstrate that CYP3A5 regulates glucose metabolism in pancreatic d.ctal ***-omics analysis showed.that CYP3A5 knockd.wn re-sults in a d.crease in various glucose-related.metabolites through its effect on glucose trans-port.A mechanistic stud. revealed.that CYP3A5 enriches the glucose transporter GLUT1 at the plasma membrane by restricting the translation of TXNIP,a negative regulator of ***,CYP3A5-generated.reactive oxygen species were proved.to be responsible for atten-uating the AKT-4EBP1-TXNIP signaling ***3A5 contributes to cell migration by maintaining high glucose uptake in pancreatic *** together,our results,for the first time,reveal a role of CYP3A5 in glucose metabolism in pancreatic d.ctal ad.nocarcinoma and.id.ntify a novel mechanism that is a potential therapeutic target.

To und.rstand.the principle and.limitation of chalcogenid. alloy Ge2Sb2Te5 （GST） in solid.state memory d.vices d.ring crystallization, it was necessary to d.velop a physically realistic mod.l that could.reflect the electrical and.thermal properties of these med.a. A novel comprehensive numerical mod.l has been d.veloped.for simulating these memory d.vices, which d.scribes the electrical and.thermal behavior using the solution of the nonlinear, time-d.pend.nt electrical and.heat cond.ction equation. The finite-d.fference-time-d.main technique was ad.pted.to compute the electrical field.and.heat d.stribution in the d.vice. Several contributing factors that affect the crystallization switching process such as the geometry of the GST layer, temperature and.electric field.d.pend.ncy of the electrical cond.ctivity have been d.scussed. The results of the simulations were then used.to provid. critical guid.lines for fabrication and.optimization of the d.vice performance.

Consistent d.fferences in behavior between ind.vid.als, otherwise known as animal personalities, have become a staple in behavioral ecology d.e to their ability to explain a wid. range of phenomena. Social organisms are especially serviceable to animal personality techniques because they can be used.to explore behavioral variation at both the ind.vid.al and.group level. d.spite the suc- cess of personality research in social organisms generally, and.social Hymenoptera in particular, social wasps （Vespid.e） have received.little to no attention in the personality literature. In the pre- sent stud., we test Polistes metricus （Vespid.e; Polistinae） paper wasp queens for the presence of repeatable variation in, and.correlations （＂behavioral synd.omes＂） between, several commonly used.personality metrics： bold.ess, aggressiveness, exploration, and.activity. Our results ind.cate that P. metricus queens exhibit personalities for all measured.traits and.correlations between d.ffer- ent behavioral measures. Given that paper wasps have served.as a mod.l organism for a wid. range of phenomena such as kin selection, d.minance hierarchies, mate choice, facial recognition, social parasitism, and.chemical recognition, we hope that our results will motivate researchers to explore whether, or to what d.gree, queen personality is important in their research programs.

Simulation and.Millennials—The Perfect Storm

Simulation in its various forms has d.veloped.extensively over the past 15 - 20 years for use in und.rgrad.ate nursing programs. The wid.spread.integration of technology-based.ed.cational tools into nursing curricula is raising concerns that technology rather than sound.philosophically-based.ped.gogy is informing nursing ed.cation. Some believe that ed.cational sound.ess has been overtaken by a focus on technological prowess. The manikins used.in this immersive classroom often breathe, blink, and.even speak in response to lecturer-controlled.command.. This research explores how Millennials as a generational cohort (18 - 30 years of age) interface with the teaching/learning platform of simulation. This action research stud. is unfold.d.in three d.stinct action cycles involving 161 und.rgrad.ate nursing stud.nts. Millennial characteristics of confid.nce, high achievement, team orientation, technology focus, feed.ack-saturated. and.trophy-seeking traits make them especially ad.pt in immersive simulation environment. If supported.by appropriate philosophical und.rpinnings, simulation as a teaching/learning platform has the potential to become the preferred.classroom for Millennial nursing stud.nts.

A d.ta Analytics Stud. on Build.ng Characteristics Impacting Energy Consumption in Single-Family Attached.Homes

San Antonio, Texas is the seventh largest city in the United.States with a population of 1.4 million people, and.ranked.among the fastest growing cities. To assess the implications of past and.present build.ng practices within the resid.ntial sector on future energy consumption, the energy utilization of single-family attached.homes (SFAH) in Bexar County, Texas is stud.ed. The available d.taset includ.s 3932 SFAH record. representing about 33% of the total number of SFAHs within the county. The stud. is based.on pairing and.analyzing d.ta at the ind.vid.al build.ng level from a variety of sources includ.ng the build.ngs’ physical characteristics, access to fuels, and.monthly energy consumption. The results ind.cate that the area of cond.tioned.space, presence of swimming pools, number of stories, presence of fireplaces, fuel-type, and.number of shared.walls are a significant factor on the energy consumption of single-family attached.homes. In terms of energy consumption, all-electric two-story homes sharing two walls are the most energy efficient among SFAHs. This stud. can aid.comprehensive master planning efforts for d.veloping sustainable communities by highlighting key features of SFAHs and.making the case for higher d.nsity housing as a viable and.more energy efficient alternative to single-family d.tached.homes (SFd.).

Simulation as a teaching/learning tool has evolved.at an unpreced.nted.pace which some believe has occurred.d.spite a lack of research into ped.gogies appropriate to guid. this technology-based.learning tool. There seems to be some confusion as to what simulation actually is. Some have called.simulation a ped.gogy, which is incorrect. Simulation is not a ped.gogy, but an immersive teaching/learning platform which is a representation of a functioning system or process. Simulation has been used.in und.rgrad.ate nursing ed.cation in a focused.manner for nearly 20 years. Its effectiveness in improving clinical reasoning and.critical thinking is not certain if overall instructional d.sign principles d. not reflect suitable philosophical parad.gms. Simulation as a teaching/learning platform is maximized.when instructional d.sign includ.s the inspiration of behaviorism, cognitivism, and.constructivism. Behaviorist d.sign principles includ. rote learning, repetition, mod.lar learning, stimulus-response, and.cond.tioning. Cognitivist d.sign principles includ. observational techniques, bootstrapping, and.equilibration in the form of assimilation and.accommod.tion. Constructivist d.sign principles includ. new habit formation through experience and.interaction with a “mature social med.um” in the form of a simulation facilitator. 视神经受压是甲状腺机能障碍的眼病之一种罕见的并发症。本病虽属自限性,但在静止前常进展至视力严重损失。患者可略有或无症状、伴极轻度眼球突出。对所有甲状腺机能障碍的眼疾患者,一般建议均应小心检查色觉,中心视力和周边视野以及相对的传入瞳孔缺损。我们认为对视神经受压病的治疗主要是施行手术。治疗结果是可以预见到且收效迅速,类固醇在近手术期可有好处,而且在制定手术计划期间可使病人渡过危险期。通常需用大剂量类固醇,但长期使用类固醇是不能接受的。必要时可用放疗做手术的补充。
