A Robust and Efficient Adaptive Multigrid Solver for the Optimal Control of Phase Field Formulations of Geometric Evolution Laws

We propose and investigate a novel solution strategy to efficiently and accurately compute approximate solutions to semilinear optimal control problems,focusing on the optimal control of phase field formulations of geometric evolution *** optimal control of geometric evolution laws arises in a number of applications in fields including material science,image processing,tumour growth and cell *** this,many open problems remain in the analysis and approximation of such *** the current work we focus on a phase field formulation of the optimal control problem,hence exploiting the well developed mathematical theory for the optimal control of semilinear parabolic partial differential *** of the resulting optimal control problemis computationally challenging,requiring massive amounts of computational time and memory *** main focus of this work is to propose,derive,implement and test an efficient solution method for such *** solver for the discretised partial differential equations is based upon a geometric multigrid method incorporating advanced techniques to deal with the nonlinearities in the problem and utilising adaptive mesh *** in-house twogrid solution strategy for the forward and adjoint problems,that significantly reduces memory requirements and CPU time,is proposed and investigated ***,parallelisation as well as an adaptive-step gradient update for the control are employed to further improve *** with a detailed description of our proposed solution method together with its implementation we present a number of computational results that demonstrate and evaluate our algorithms with respect to accuracy and efficiency.A highlight of the present work is simulation results on the optimal control of phase field formulations of geometric evolution laws in 3-D which would be computationally infeasible without the solution strategies proposed in the present work.

BACKGROUND Preterm birth(PTB)is one of the main causes of neonatal deaths globally,with approximately 15million infants are born *** from the Black,Asian,and Minority Ethnic(BAME)populations maybe at higher risk of PTB,therefore,the mental health impact on mothers experiencing a PTB is particularly important,within the BAME *** To determine the prevalence of mental health conditions among BAME women with PTB as well as the methods of mental health assessments used to characterise the mental health *** A systematic methodology was developed and published as a protocol in PROSPERO(CRD420-20210863).Multiple databases were used to extract relevant data.I2 and Egger's tests were used to detect the heterogeneity and publication bias.A trim and fill method was used to demonstrate the influence of publication bias and the credibility of *** Thirty-nine studies met the eligibility criteria from a possible *** prevalence rates of depression among PTB-BAME mothers were significantly higher than full-term mothers with a standardized mean difference of 1.5 and a 95%confidence interval(CI)29%-74%.The subgroup analysis indicated depressive symptoms to be time *** within the very PTB category demonstrated a significantly higher prevalence of depression than those categorised as non-very *** prevalence rates of anxiety and stress among PTB-BAME mothers were significantly higher than in full-term mothers(odds ratio of 88%and 60%with a CI of 42%-149%and 24%-106%,respectively).CONCLUSION BAME women with PTB suffer with mental health *** studies did not report on specific mental health outcomes for BAME ***,the impact of PTB is not accurately represented in this population,and thus could negatively influence the quality of maternity services they receive.

The campo rupestre sensu lato is a vegetation type that occurs in South American mountains,supports a distinctive flora characterized by high rates of endemism,high herbaceous species richness and often-neglected but also species-rich of the arboreal *** aimed to investigate how environmental factors and elevation are associated with the distribution and diversity of woody species in different rupestrian vegetation types across South *** a database of 2,049 woody species from 185 sites across four vegetation types within the campo rupestre,we assessed how the vegetation types were grouped according to their floristic composition and number of shared indicator species,as well as by using different beta diversity *** most important variables from a set of 27 variables(***,geo-edaphic and climatic)explaining species distribution were identified using redundancy analysis(RDA)and variation partitioning *** distribution of vegetation types was related to both environmental and spatial fractions,with a set of 17 variables retained(***,grass cover and temperature seasonality as the most important variables).There was an association between the floristic composition of each vegetation type and the elevation *** the identified vegetation types are floristically related,they are distinguished by exclusive and habitat-specialist woody *** uniqueness of vegetation types should be considered in terms of complementarity for the conservation of campos rupestres.

Merging GIS and Machine Learning Techniques: A Paper Review

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) data showcase locations of earth observations or features, their associated attributes and spatial relationships that exist between such observations. Analysis of GIS data varies widely and may include some modeling and predictions which are usually computing-intensive and complicated, especially, when large datasets are involved. With advancement in computing technologies, techniques such as Machine learning (ML) are being suggested as a potential game changer in the analysis of GIS data because of their comparative speed, accuracy, automation, and repeatability. Perhaps, the greatest benefit of using both GIS and ML is the ability to transfer results from one database to another. GIS and ML tools have been used extensively in medicine, urban development, and environmental modeling such as landslide susceptibility prediction (LSP). There is also the problem of data loss during conversion between GIS systems in medicine, while in geotechnical areas such as erosion and flood prediction, lack of data and variability in soil has limited the use of GIS and ML techniques. This paper gives an overview of the current ML methods that have been incorporated into the spatial analysis of data obtained from GIS tools for LSP, health, and urban development. The use of Supervised Machine Learning (SML) algorithms such as decision trees, SVM, KNN, and perceptron including Unsupervised Machine Learning algorithms such as k-means, elbow algorithms, and hierarchal algorithm have been discussed. Their benefits, as well as their shortcomings as studied by several researchers have been elucidated in this review. Finally, this review also discusses future optimization techniques.

Experiment meets biogeography:plants of river corridor distribution are not more stress tolerant but benefit less from more benign conditions elsewhere

Aims Factors limiting distributions of species are fundamental to ecology and evolution but have rarely been addressed experimentally for multiple *** conspicuous linear distribution patterns of plant species confined to river corridors in the Central European lowlands constitute an especially long-standing distribution *** experimentally tested our novel hypothesis that the tolerance of species to river corridor conditions is independent of the degree of confinement to river corridor habitats,but that species not confined to river corridors are better able to take advantage of the more benign non-river corridor *** We grew 42 herbaceous species differing in their confinement to river corridors in a common garden experiment on loamy soil typical for river corridor areas and sandy soil typical for non-river corridor areas,and with and without a flooding *** a subset of species,we grew plants of both river corridor and non-river corridor origin to test for adaptation to river corridor *** findings Species more confined to river corridor areas benefited less from the more benign non-flooded and non-river corridor soil conditions than species of wider distributional range *** subsets of 7 and 12 widespread species,the response to flooding and soil origin,respectively,did not differ between plants from river corridor sites and plants from other sites,suggesting that the habitat tolerance of widespread species is due to phenotypic plasticity rather than to local ***,we found clear support for our novel hypothesis that species not confined to river corridors are more able to take advantage of the more benign non-river corridor *** study provides a general hypothesis on differences between species confined to stressful habitats and widespread species out for test in further multispecies comparative experiments.

Settlement predictions of footings on sands using probabilisticanalysis

The design of footings on sands is often controlled by settlement rather than bearing ***,settlement predictions are essential in the design of shallow ***,predicted settlements of footings are highly dependent on the chosen elastic modulus and the used *** paper presents the use of probabilistic analysis to evaluate the variability of predicted settlements of footings on sands,focusing on the load curve(predicted settlements)*** methodologies,the first-and second-order second-moment(FOSM and SOSM),and Monte Carlo simulation(MCS),for calculating the mean and variance of the estimated settlements through Schmertmann(1970)’s equation,are presented and *** soil beneath the footing is treated as an uncorrelated layered material,so the total settlement and variance are found by adding up the increments of the *** deformability modulus(ESi)is considered as the only independent random *** an example of application,a hypothetical case of a typical subsoil in the state of Espirito Santo,southeast of Brazil,is *** results indicate that there is a significant similarity between the SOSM and MCS methods,while the FOSM method underestimates the results due to the non-consideration of the high-order terms in Taylor’s *** contribution of the knowledge of the uncertainties in settlement prediction can provide a safer design.

Use of Medicinal Cannabis for Palliative Care Patients: A Systematic Review

Background: Medical cannabis is a rapidly growing area of medicine. In this sense, due to the numerous benefits associated with its use, it has been increasingly proposed for patients in palliative care, in which the improvement of debilitating symptoms is directly associated with better quality of life. However, due to the complexity of treatments for these individuals, further studies are needed to determine the best possible prescription for them. Objective: Understand the endocannabinoid system and evaluate the feasibility of using medical cannabis in palliative care patients. Methods: Systematic literature review, addressing the following topics: “cancer, cannabis, and palliative care”. The search was carried out using the Virtual Health Library: Lilacs, SciELO, Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane, with articles between 2013 and 2022. Results and discussion: A total of 116 articles were found with the descriptors. After reading the abstracts, 22 showed greater association with the theme and were chosen for the preparation of this review. Conclusion: It is concluded that medical cannabis is an excellent treatment option for most of the symptoms present in patients in palliative care. In this way, the adoption of this drug by the public becomes logical. However, it is the physician’s role to seek to understand the particularities of these individuals and this new possibility of treatment, which, it seems, will significantly improve the end of life of these patients—this being the main role of the medical teams.

Modeling and Mapping Flood Hazard with a Flood Risk Assessment Tool: A Case Study of Austin, Texas

As a hazard, flood is an extremely important indicator of how a city is resilient to waterborne diseases and epidemics. Over many decades, flood as a hazard has been a major factor in inducing displacement of marginalized section of the people. Austin city within Central Texas has been identified as one of the major hotspots for flooding in recent decades. Thus, the objectives of the paper are two folded: 1) Empirically, we analyzed and mapped out the susceptibility levels from the factors of physical environments to assess the risk of urban flooding (rainfall data, surface water bodies and topography);in Austin, Texas and 2) Methodologically, we created a re-useable ArcGIS scripting tool that can be used by researchers to automate the process of flood risk modelling with certain criteria. The paper showcases a novel time sensitive building of a tool which will enable better visibility of flood within the city of Austin.
