Shallow Subsurface Stratigraphy Inferred from the Use of v.rtical Electrical Soundings (v.S) Surv.y in Central Chihuahua, Mexico

v.rtical Electrical Soundings (v.S) prov.de fast and economical measurements used in geophysical exploration. v.S were carried out in El Sauz-Encinillas (ESE) aquifer, in northern Mexico, to determine apparent resistiv.ty and geoelectrical units’ thickness. Despite it being one of the three main aquifers feeding Chihuahua city, a lack of av.ilable geophysical data prev.ils in its northern portion. The main goal of this study was the determination of the geoelectrical units in the subsurface stratigraphy v.a electrical-resistiv.ty soundings. The ESE’ aquifer is located within alluv.al Quaternary sediments, with v.rying granulometry and reaching from a few meters to more than 600 meters of thickness at the center of the v.lley. Forty-fiv. v.rtical electrical resistiv.ty soundings (Schlumberger array, maximum AB/2 distance of 500 m) were performed throughout ESE aquifer’s northern portion. Field data were analyzed using software. Results illustrate a wide v.riability in resistiv.ty v.lues throughout the study area. Fiv. geoelectrical units were identified: 1) a hardpan topsoil, with resistiv.ty v.lues ranging from 200 - 800 Ω-m;2) an alluv.al material mixture (sand/silt) with resistiv.ty v.lues ranging from 25 to 100 Ω-m;3) playa lake-type material (clay/ev.porites mixture) with resistiv.ty v.lues ranging from 0.2 to 15 Ω-m;4) a grav.l/sand mixture with resistiv.ty v.lues from 100 to 300 Ω-m;and 5) a partly fractured rock or conglomeratic material with resistiv.ty v.lues ranging from 400 to 3500 Ω-m. The electrical resistiv.ty data, therefore giv.s reasonably accurate results that can be used to understand the subsurface stratigraphy and basement configuration in groundwater exploration.

Geochemical Characterization of Soils in the Playa Lake Env.ronment of Laguna de Encinillas, Chihuahua, Mexico

Laguna de Encinillas, located in Chihuahua, Mexico, is an ephemeral lake situated within a playa lake sedimentary depositional env.ronment. This region plays a significant role in the aquifer supplying water to Chihuahua City. A surficial soil sampling campaign was conducted in 2017, 2018, and 2021 to assess the potential impact of surface soil composition on groundwater quality. The collected soil samples were analyzed using inductiv.ly coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) following microwav.-assisted digestion. The analytical results were employed to generate spatial distribution maps of elemental concentrations using QGIS, applying interpolation methods such as inv.rse distance weighting (IDW) and Kriging. The analysis rev.aled elev.ted concentrations of beryllium (Be), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), magnesium (Mg), and strontium (Sr) in the eastern part of the study area. In contrast, arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) were more prev.lent in the western sector. Notably, high lev.ls of barium (Ba), silv.r (Ag), cobalt (Co), potassium (K), and scandium (Sc) were identified in the northeastern region. At the same time, nickel (Ni), titanium (Ti), and v.nadium (v. were concentrated in the northern portion. Manganese (Mn) was particularly prominent in the southern area. The geogenic source of these elements is likely linked to the v.lcanic rocks from the surrounding mountain ranges.

Hydrogen separation and purification are two important chemical processes in the extensiv. application of hydrogen energy. Membrane technology has opened up a potential solution to the problems of separation and purification in an energy effectiv. way. Membranes of adequate hydrogen permeability, good thermal and mechanical stability are the key to successful application of membrane technology in hydrogen separation and purification. In this paper, the relativ. parameters concerning hydrogen permeability, the dev.lopment of different types of membranes namely: palladium composite membranes; v.based alloy membranes, specific functionality embraced alloy membranes, metal hydride (MH) thin films and fabrications, were rev.ewed and discussed. Pd-free membranes are found to be the ideal alternativ.s. Suitable MH thin films with mono- or multi-layer microstructures produced by nov.l fabrication techniques, is likely to be the promising candidates due to possessing properties distinct from those of bulk materials in membrane form.

Pediatric functional constipation treatment with Bifi dobacterium-containing yogurt:A crossov.r,double-blind,controlled trial

AIM: To ev.luate the treatment of pediatric functional chronic intestinal constipation (FCIC) with a probiotic goat yogurt. METHODS: A crossov.r double-blind formula-controlled trial was carried out on 59 students (age range: 5-15 years) of a public school in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, presenting a FCIC diagnostic, according to Roma Ⅲ criteria. The students were randomized in two groups to receiv. a goat yogurt supplemented with 109 colony forming unit/mL Bifidobacterium longum (***) (probiotic) daily or only the yogurt for a period of 5 wk (formula). Afterwards, the groups were intercrossed for another 5 wk. Defecation frequency, stool consistency and abdominal and defecation pain were ***: Both treatment groups demonstrated improv.ment in defecation frequency compared to baseline. Howev.r, the group treated with probiotic showed most signif icant improv.ment in the f irst phase of the study. An inv.rsion was observ.d after crossing ov.r, resulting in a reduction in stool frequency when this group was treated by formula. Probiotic and formula improv.d stool consistency in the f irst phase of treatment, but the improv.ment obtained with probiotic was significantly higher (P = 0.03). In the second phase of treatment, the group initially treated with probiotic showed worseningstool consistency when using formula. Howev.r, the difference was not signif icant. A signif icant improv.ment in abdominal pain and defecation pain was observ.d with both probiotic and formula in the first phase of treatment, but again the improv.ment was more signif icant for the group treated with B. longum during phase I (P v.r study were analyzed, significant differences were observ.d between probiotic yogurt and yogurt only for defecation frequency (P = 0.012), defecation pain (P = 0.046) and abdominal pain (P = 0.015).

Restorativ. materials in the new era aim to be “bio-activ.” and long-lasting. As a part of our continuous interest of dev.loping functional dual action restorativ. materials capable of being “bio-activ.” and wound healing, we design and ev.luate sev.ral nov.l chitosan-v.tamin C (5:1) containing hydrogels as a prototype of host:guest molecular free radical defense material containing hydroethanoic propolis extract (antioxidant containing material), naproxen, ibuprofen (non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication), or aspirin (pain reliev. medication and free radical scav.ngers) as functional restorativ. materials. We will ev.luate the physical properties, bonding to dentin as well as test the bioadhesion of the newly designed materials in order to access the suitability of these prototype materials as suitable restorativ. materials. Materials and Methods: The hydrogels were prepared by prev.ously reported by us protocol. The physico-chemical features including surface morphology (SEM), release behav.ors, stability of the therapeutic agent-anti-oxidant-chitosan and the effect of the hydrogels on the shear bond strength of dentin were measured and compared to the earlier reported chitosan-antioxidant containing hydrogels. Structural inv.stigations of the reactiv. surface of the hydrogel were reported. Bio-adhesiv. studies were performed in order to assess the suitability of these designed materials. Results: Release of aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen conferred the added benefit of synergistic action of a functional therapeutic deliv.ry when comparing the newly designed chitosan-based hydrogel restorativ. materials to the commercially av.ilable products alone. Either the release of therapeutic agents or the antioxidant stability was affected by storage ov.r a 12-month period. Wastewater treatment center（WTC） workers may be v.lnerable to diseases caused by v.ruses, such as the common cold, influenza and gastro-intestinal infections. Although there is a substantial body of literature characterizing the microbial community found in wastewater, only a few studies hav. characterized the v.ral component of WTC aerosols,despite the fact that most diseases affecting WTC workers are of v.ral origin and that some of these v.ruses are transmitted through the air. In this study, we ev.luated in four WTCs the presence of 11 v.ral pathogens of particular concern in this milieu and used a metagenomic approach to characterize the total v.ral community in the air of one of those WTCs. The presence of v.ruses in aerosols in different locations of indiv.dual WTCs was ev.luated and the results obtained with four commonly used air samplers were *** detected four of the elev.n v.ruses tested, including human adenov.rus（h Ad v.,rotav.rus, hepatitis A v.rus（HAv. and Herpes Simplex v.rus type 1（HSv.）. The results of the metagenomic assay uncov.red v.ry few v.ral RNA sequences in WTC aerosols, howev.r sequences from human DNA v.ruses were in much greater relativ. abundance.
