Vegan consumers look for fresh,tasty,and nutritious products that use eco/animal-friendly *** are substrates selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health *** study aimed to overview the potentially vegan products added with prebiotics,their health benefits,and the main technological and sensory *** main potentially vegan products added with prebiotics studied were based on water-soluble plant-based extracts(fermented beverages,frozen desserts,cheese analog),fruits(fruit juices,fruit jelly,and ready to eat fruits),and cereals(snack bars,granola bars,bread,and cookies).The main prebiotic compounds used were inulin,fructooligosaccharides,oligofructose,polydextrose,and *** effects of prebiotic on food products’,host health,and technological and sensory properties depended on the prebiotic type and dosage,food matrix,and subject *** positive health effects were related to skin health,gut microbiota improvement,hypocholesterolemic impact,reduction of the risk of metabolic diseases,and improvements in postprandial blood glucose and insulin *** could improve vegan products’technological and sensory properties,such as fermentation time,texture and rheological properties,storage length,sensory acceptance,and probiotic ***,they could increase the concentration and/or bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds and ***,it is of paramount importance the determination of prebiotic *** trends direct to new prebiotic compounds based on microalgae,fruit and cereal by-products,and *** review provides industries and researchers with important information about prebiotics and vegan products.

Role of endoscopic ultrasound in esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer(ECA)affects 1 in 125 men and 1 in 417 for women and accounts for 2.6%of all cancer related deaths in the United *** associated survival rate depends on the stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis,making adequate work up and staging *** 5-year survival rate for localized disease is 46.4%,regional disease is 25.6%,and distant/metastatic disease is 5.2%.Additionally,treatment is stage-dependent,making staging all that much *** nonmetastatic transmural tumors(T3)and/or those that have locoregional lymph node involvement(N),neoadjuvant therapy is ***,for those who have earlier tumors,upfront surgical resection is *** positron emission tomography/computed tomography and other cross sectional imaging modalities are exceptional for detecting distant disease,they are inaccurate in staging locoregional *** ultrasound(EUS)has played a key role in the locoregional(T and N)staging of newly diagnosed ECA and has an evolving role in restaging after neoadjuvant *** is even data to support that the use of EUS facilitates proper triaging of patients and may ultimately save money by avoiding unnecessary or futile *** manuscript will review the current role of EUS on staging and restaging of ECA.

Time-dependent impact of a high-fat diet on the intestinal barrier of male mice

Mixed-method study on medicinal herb collection in relation to wildlife conservation:the case of giant pandas in China

Medicinal herb collection has historical and cultural roots in many rural communities in developing *** where herb collection occurs may overlap with biodiversity hotspots and crucial habitat of endangered and threatened ***,impacts of such practices on wildlife are unknown and possibly underestimated,perhaps due to the elusive nature of such *** examined this phenomenon in Wolong Nature Reserve,China,a protected area in the South-Central China biodiversity hotspot that also supports a community of Tibetan,Qiang and Han people who use herb collection as a supplementary source of *** adopted a participatory approach in which we engaged local people in outlining spatial and temporal dynamics of medicinal herb collection *** found that the overall spatial extent of herb collection increased in the past two *** then overlaid herb collection maps with localities of giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)feces collected over two time points in the *** a Bayesian parameter estimation,we found evidence for declined giant panda occurrence in the areas most recently impacted by emerging medicinal herb *** methodology demonstrates the potential power of integrating participatory approaches with quantitative methods for processes like herb collection that may be difficult to examine *** discuss future directions for improving explanatory power and addressing uncertainty in this type of mixed-method,interdisciplinary re*** work has implications for future attempts to understand whether and how prevalent but subtle human activities may affect wildlife conservation.

Control of a sap-sucking insect pest by plastidmediated RNA interference

Expression of double-stranded RNAs in plastids offers great potential for the efficient control of chewing ***,many insect pests do not consume plant tissue but rather feed on the host plant by sucking sap from the vascular *** or not plastid-mediated RNA interference(RNAi)can be employed to control sap-sucking insects is ***,we show that five species of sap-sucking hemipteran insects acquire plastid RNA upon feeding on *** generated both nuclear transgenic and transplastomic tobacco plants expressing double-stranded RNAs targeting the Mpdhc64C gene,a newly identified efficient target gene of RNAi whose silencing causes lethality to the green peach aphid Myzus *** a whole-plant bioassay,transplastomic plants exhibited significant resistance to aphids,as evidenced by reduced insect survival,impaired fecundity,and decreased weight of *** protective effect was comparable with that conferred by the best-performing nuclear transgenic *** found that the proportion of aphids on mature leaves of transplastomic plants was significantly lower compared with that of nuclear transgenic *** aphids were allowed to *** the mature leaves,transplastomic plants grew significantly faster and were overall better protected from the pest compared with nuclear transgenic *** monitored by electrical-penetration-graph analyses and aphid avoidance response experiments,the insects displayed remarkable alterations in feeding behavior,which was different in nuclear transgenic and transplastomic plants,likely reflecting specific avoidance strategies to toxic RNA *** together,our study demonstrates that plastid-mediated RNAi provides an efficient strategy for controlling at least some sap-sucking insect pests,even though there is most likely no or only very little chloroplast RNA in the sap.

Telemetry research on elusive wildlife: A synthesis of studies on giant pandas

Telemetry studies that track animals through space and time can lead to advances in scientific understanding that are vital in conservation *** example,telemetry studies of the giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)have shed light on many aspects of panda biology,but small sample sizes in each separate study make it difficult to draw broad *** overcome this problem we conducted the first synthesis of all 5 panda telemetry studies conducted to *** these data we investigated patterns in 6 main topics:home range,space-use interactions,core areas,movement patterns,seasonal migration and natal *** found that panda home range sizes do not vary between 2 main mountain ranges(Qionglai and Qinling),as was previously *** results also suggest that female pandas increase their movement in the mating season:a behavior typically attributed only to *** found and summarized telemetry and genetic evidence for female natal dispersal in the giant *** synthesis highlights the need for additional research relating panda behavior to human disturbance factors,and can aid future studies on giant pandas as well as other species.

Recent Progress on Electrode Characteristics of Mg and Mg-Based Hydrogen Storage Alloys

Recent development of Mg and Mg-based hydrogen storage alloys used in Ni-MH battery was discussed extensively. The results obtained from recent studies prove that these alloys with nanocrystalline/amorphous structure formed by mechanical alloying (MA) or mechanical grinding (MG) have good electrode characteristics. In general, MA or MG, and elemental substitution alloying are regarded as the effective means to seek new system of Mg-based alloys and nano-composite with improved electrode characteristics. However, until now, the currently known improvement in these electrode characteristics is still far from reach to that required for commercial application.

This paper reports on a demonstration of YAMZ(Yet Another Metadata Zoo)as a mechanism for building community consensus around metadata *** demonstration is motivated by the complexity of the metadata standards environment and the need for more user-friendly approaches for researchers to achieve vocabulary *** paper reviews a series of metadata standardization challenges,explores crowdsourcing factors that offer possible solutions,and introduces the YAMZ system.A YAMZ demonstration is presented with members of the Toberer materials science laboratory at the Colorado School of Mines,where there is a need to confirm and maintain a shared understanding for the vocabulary supporting research documentation,data management,and their larger metadata *** demonstration involves three key steps:1)Sampling terms for the demonstration,2)Engaging graduate student researchers in the demonstration,and 3)Reflecting on the *** results of these steps,including examples of the dialog provenance among lab members and voting,show the ease with YAMZ can facilitate building metadata vocabulary *** conclusion discusses implications and highlights next steps.

Bioactivity of mackerel peptides on obesity and insulin resistance,an in-vivo study

Of many metabolic irregularity risk factors,glucose intolerance,insulin resistance,and abdominal obesity are the main *** risk of vascular diseases and cancers is rather high in such individuals therefore its treatment and prevention are equally important for the health of *** including fish biopeptides have frequently shown to prevent and or ameliorate these risk *** our earlier studies,Atlantic mackerel hydrolysate and its fractions showed promising effects on immunity and ***,therefore,in the current study,aimed to examine the effects of mackerel hydrolysate along its cationic peptides,isolated at pH3 using electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membrane,on metabolic disorder factors in diet-induced insulin resistant obese *** were fed the chow and or the hypercaloric diet (high fat high sucrose) for the duration of *** the hypercaloric fed insulin resistant obese mice were gavaged daily either the vehicle and or the test material at the dosage of 208 mg of sample protein per kg mice body *** to our observations,mackerel peptides could not effectively modulate food intake,weight gain,adiposity,plasma glucose and insulin concentrations,hepatic cholesterol,and triglyceride ***,obesity and metabolic impairments could not be averted by the treatments in insulin resistant obese *** conclusion,anti-hypertensive,and immunomodulatory attributes of mackerel peptides at the tested concentrations do not seem to be correlated with its metabolic syndrome benefiting *** presume a general statement about the metabolic syndrome benefiting potency of Atlantic mackerel's biopeptides further research is warranted.
