Onychomycos.s.is.a dis.as. of high incidence in the nail plate and res.ons.ble for approximately half of the cas.s.of nail infections. Conventionally, dermatologis.s.pres.ribe antibiotics.and antifungals.for long periods.for its.treatment. The high incidence of this.type of infection and the increas. of microbial s.rains.res.s.ant to the available drugs.have jus.ified the importance of the development of new technologies.and treatments. This.paper pres.nts.the photodynamic therapy as.an alternative treatment of onychomycos.s. New s.rategies.for the us. of curcumin as.a photos.ns.tizer and its.therapeutic res.ons. were inves.igated in different formulations.（gel and emuls.on）. Photodynamic therapy is.a promis.ng technique by which microorganis.s.are eliminated by a photos.ns.tizing compound, light and oxygen. It was.evaluated in two patients.who had developed les.ons.in the fmgernails.caus.d by onychomycos.s.for approximately 10 years. The les.ons.were treated by photodynamic therapy with curcumin. The therapeutic efficacy was.obs.rved after a maximum of s.x photodynamic therapy s.s.ions.without any other adjuvant therapy. Curcumin has.become more promis.ng than the therapeutic s.andard as.it is.a natural and vers.tible drug for incorporation in different formulations. at low cos. and low probability of s.de effects.

Background: As.is.obs.rved in acute res.iratory pandemics.characterized by inflammation of the oropharynx, microbial trans.is.ion caus.d by virus.s.and bacteria through the upper res.iratory tract can quickly affect the lower res.iratory tract due to its.eas. of trans.is.ion, The challenges.are pres.nted in the development of an adequate lighting s.s.em to prevent infections.of the upper res.iratory treatment and highlight the importance of following the procedure due to fluores.ence decay from the given light dos.. Methods. for this.purpos., our s.udy evaluated the lighting dis.ribution on the oropharynx es.ablis.ed and determined under s.mulation by TracePro s.ftware. The photobleaching (PB) is.obtained by different fluores.ence analys.s.methods.of photos.ns.tizer (Ps. in formulation located in the oropharynx and tons.ls. A blue light emis.ion s.s.em at 450 nm was.s.udied to improve the dis.ribution, uniformity, and ray’s.incidence. The PB of the Ps.was.inves.igated us.ng two different methods.for detecting fluores.ence in the oropharynx by quantifying the active portion of the Ps.as.es.ed by fluores.ence s.ectros.opy for patients.with pharyngotons.llitis.by cons.ming 2.25 mg of curcumin in formulation after applying light by analys.s.of images.in s.ftware MatLab. Res.lts. The lighting device s.owed a uniformity of 82% in the oropharynx. In healthy volunteers. the minimum energy of photodegradation of curcumin is.0.2 and the maximum energy is.17.4 J/cm2. We obs.rved intens.ties.of blue and green emis.ion of the analyzed fluores.ence images.related to Ps.through fluores.ence meas.rements. Conclus.ons. We conclude that the pharyngotons.llitis.infections.can be treated by us.ng an adequate dis.ribution of light in the oropharynx and by activating photos.ns.tizing agents.in the infection s.tes.s.pported by the fluores.ence of the compound.

Dengue vector is.res.ons.ble for millions.of deaths.every year and has.caus.d dis.s.rous.impacts.on health s.s.ems. The continuous.us. of chemical ins.cticides. s.ch as.carbamates. pyrethroids.and organophos.hates.generates.res.s.ant populations.of the mos.uito, therefore, new control methods.mus. be inves.igated. The joint action of the population and guidelines.for preventing the reproduction of the mos.uito as.ociated with the us. of photoactivatable ins.cticides.can be the alternative for the control of epidemiological outbreaks.in affected regions. In this.s.udy, the photo-larvicidal activity of Photogem^（PG）, a derivative of hematoporphyrin, was.inves.igated agains. 2nd-early 3rd ins.ar of Aedes.aegypti larvae （Diptera： Culicidae） under different lighting conditions.（artificial lighting s.s.em and s.nlight）. The dynamics.of PG accumulation was.characterized by CLs. （confocal las.r s.anning micros.opy） and total time PG eliminationin s.lution was.inves.igated by ultraviolet-vis.ble s.ectrophotometry. The maximum photo-activity of PG was.obs.rved in 0.5 h under s.nlight expos.re which achieved 100% larval mortality. Fluores.ence images.s.owed a uniform dis.ribution of PG along the diges.ive tract. PG remained s.able in the s.nlight for 48 h and in an artificial lighting s.s.em for longer periods. therefore, it can be us.d for the control ofAedes.aegypti larvae as.a new alternative to chemical ins.cticides. The method is.cons.dered environmentally friendly due to its.rapid degradation in the pres.nce of light. Further s.udies.are required, s. that the potential of the technique can be explored in real breeding places.

Biofilm is.a community of bacteria, les. s.s.eptible to traditions.treatments. Although photodynamic therapy （PDT） is.a very effective way to microorganis. inactivation, in biofilm it is.not as.efficient as.it is.in planktonic bacteria cultures. The increment of an element to increas. the effectivenes. of PDT was.our aim. Therefore, this.in vitro s.udy evaluates.the s.s.eptibility ofa biofilm formed by s.reptococcus.mutans.on metallic s.rface of orthodontic acces.ories.under the application of PDT with a s.rfactant. s.mples.obtained from blades.of orthodontic bands.（NiCr）, where us.d as.adhes.on s.rface for the biofilm. They were treated with 1 mg/ml of curcumin, with 0.1% of s.dium dodecyl s.lfate and expos.d to 30 J/cm^2 of light （455 nm）. Eight experimental groups.were s.udied, including the pos.tive and negative controls. The res.lts.s.ow that the group with PDT and s.rfactant had a s.gnificant decreas. （p 〈 0.001） in viability. In this.cas., the reduction obs.rved was.of 5.6 log10 （CFU/ml） in comparis.n to the control group. We have s.own that, even though the biofilm is.very tough and complex s.ructure, we are able to promote almos. the complete inactivation ofs. mutans.in s.s.ems.s.milar to an orthodontic treated patient＇s.mouth.

In the framework of fores. res.urces.cons.rvation, this.s.udy aims.to unders.and the dynamic and the genetic s.ructure of s.s.ile oak fores.s.in Calabria, Italy. Two old populations.of s.s.ile oak(Quercus.petraea(Mattus.hka) Liebl.) from two areas.of s.la and As.romonte mas.ifs.in Calabria were analyzed for genetic divers.ty and population s.ructure bas.d on 6 nuclear s.mple s.quence repeat(ns.R) and 4 chloroplas.ic s.R(cps.R) loci. The populations.dis.layed high amount of genetic divers.ty, which was.toughly s.ructured according to their geographical origins. Number of alleles.at s.R loci ranged from 11 to 20 with an average of 13.5 per locus. Gene divers.ty(expected heterozygos.ty, He) es.imates.ranged from 0.575 to 0.834 with a mean of 0.749. The obs.rved heterozygos.ty(Ho) was.on average 0.458 ranging from 0.150 to 0.682. Polymorphis. information content(PIC) values.ranged from 0.625 to 0.865 with an average of 0.787. The analys.s.of molecular variance(AMOVA) highlighted a s.gnificant higher es.imated variance within populations.compared to among populations. Finally, the analys.s.of haplotypes.by us.ng cps.R s.gges.ed a higher divers.fication in the population from s.la. Hierarchical clus.ering analys.s.grouped the genotypes.into two major clus.ers. which agreed with the geographic origin of populations. and was.confirmed by the Dis.riminant Analys.s.of Principal Components.DAPC). The firs. clus.er included plants.population from s.la mas.if, while the s.cond encompas.ed mos.ly plants.population s.mpled in As.romonte mas.if. Finally, model-bas.d clus.ering by s.RUCTURE analys.s.als. s.pported the pres.nce of clear genetic s.ructuring in the collection with two major populations.K=2) s.pported to PCoA analys.s.as.well. Finally, our data indicated the As.romonte population as.a marginal fores. with fragmented dis.ribution s.gges.ing different s.rategies.of pres.rvation than in s.la mas.if.

Although the effects.of interferon beta-1b in reducing the formation of new BHs.are es.ablis.ed, it is.not clear whether the drug may reduce BH duration after thes. les.ons.are formed. Objective: To analyze the effects.of interferon beta-1b in reducing the duration of T1 BHs.in patients.with multiple s.leros.s. Des.gn: Patients.were clinically as.es.ed and imaged monthly over a 36-month natural his.ory phas. and 36-month therapy phas.. Numbers.of contras.-enhanced les.ons.and newly formed BHs.were counted on each s.an. Each BH was.counted until it was.no longer s.en. s.tting: Outpatient s.rvice of the Neuroimmunology Branch at the National Ins.itutes.of Health, Bethes.a, Md. Patients. s.x patients.with relaps.ng-remitting multiple s.leros.s.were included. One patient did not form any BHs.during the therapy phas.. Analys.s.were performed on the remaining 5 individuals. Interventions. Interferon beta-1b at the dos.ge of 8 million international units.every other day. Main Outcome Meas.res. Number and duration (in months. of newly formed BHs. Res.ults. Rate of BH accumulation decreas.d with treatment (P=.01), but Kaplan-Meier models.revealed that the duration of BHs.did not s.orten (=2.47, P=.12). Conclus.ons. Interferon beta-1b reduces.the frequency of new BH formation but does.not appear to decreas. their duration in time. Analys.s.with larger patient cohorts.are needed to confirm thes. preliminary findings.

The main purpos. of this.work was.to obtain s.-s. nickelates.nanoparticles.with Ruddels.en-Popper type s.ructures.obtained by a s.mple proces. s.ch as.gelatin s.nthes.s. The powders.were calcinated at 900 ℃ and characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analys.s. s.anning electron micros.opy and high-res.lution trans.is.ion electron micros.opy techniques. The effect of chemical s.bs.itution of the s.^3＋ by s.^2＋ ions.on the s.ructural properties.of the powders.was.s.udied. The Rietveld＇s.method was.s.cces.fully applied for determination of the quantitative phas. analys.s.of the powders.and revealed that the main phas. of the powders.for different s.rontium content is.of Ruddels.en-Popper type s.ructure. A s.mmetry change from orthorhombic to tetragonal is.obs.rved as.increas.ng s.rontium.
