Background and Purpose -On cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), white matter hyperintensities (wMH) and lacunes are generally viewed as evidence of small vessel disease. The clinical significance of small vessel disease in terms of global cognitive function has as yet not been completely clarified. we investigated the independent contribution of wMH and lacunes to general cognitive function in a group of independently living elderly with varying degrees of small vessel disease. Methods -Data were drawn from the multicenter, multinational Leukokraurosis and Disability (LADIS) study. There were 633 independently living participants. General cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State examination (MMSe) and the modified Alzheimer Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS). On MRI, wMH was rated as mild, moderate, or severe. Lacunes were rated as none, few (1 to 3), or many (4 or more). Results -In the basic analysis, increasing severity of both wMH and lacunes was related to deteriorating score on the MMSe and ADAS. when wMH and lacunes were entered simultaneously, both MRI measures remained significantly associated with MMSe score. Increasing severity of wMH remained associated with ADAS score, whereas the association with lacunes became less prominent. These associations were independent of other risk factors for dementia, like education, depression, vascular risk factors, or stroke. conclusion -we fo und wMH and lacunes to be independently associated with general cognitive functi on in a sample of independently living elderly. These results highlight the fact that wMH and lacunes should both be evaluated when assessing small vessel disea se in relation to cognitive function.

cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Most cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathy, are associated with loss of functional cardiomyocytes. Unfortunately, the heart has a limited regenerative capacity and is not able to replace these cardiomyocytes once lost. In recent years, stem cells have been put forward as a potential source for cardiac regeneration. Pre-clinical studies that use stem cell-derived cardiac cells show promising results. The mechanisms,though, are not well understood, results have been variable, sometimes transient in the long term, and often without a mechanistic *** are still severalmajor hurdles to be taken. Stem cell-derived cardiac cells should resemble original cardiac cell types and be able to integrate in the damaged heart. Integration requires administration of stem cell-derived cardiac cells at the right time using the right mode of delivery. Once delivered, transplanted cells need vascularization, electrophysiological coupling with the injured heart, and prevention of immunological rejection. Finally, stem cell therapy needs to be safe, reproducible, and affordable. In this review, we will give an introduction to the principles of stem cell based cardiac repair.

Seabirds are valuable indicators of marine ecosystem processes and studying seabird diets can shed light on natural or human-induced variability in food-web *** single-prey loading seabird species such as terns have the potential to act as visual sentinels of prey availability ***,obtaining diet information from remote bird colonies is often challenging and time *** this pilot study we present a novel approach to combine two established methods to study seabird foraging ecology,providing a powerful and cost-effective tool to study the distribution of prey items available to *** combined GPS tracking data of Sandwich Terns(Thalasseus sandvicensis)with prey-observations from a hide in 2012 and 2013,and from semicontinuously recorded camera footage in *** doing so,we identified 115 approximate catch locations of prey(86 herring/sprat clupeidae,29 sandeel Ammodytidae).combining GPS-data and prey observations yielded detailed knowledge on the movements and chick diets of tracked birds as well as the spatial origin and lengths of captured prey *** catch distances of both clupeidae and Ammodytidae resulted in deliveries of larger prey items and thus higher energy yield per trip,but also a higher energy expenditure per *** discuss the limitations and potential of our methodological approach to study foraging energetics during chick-provisioning of seabirds that carry prey items visible in their beaks.

Predation rate with relation to species, sex and water temperature was tested among four different gammaridean spe- cies： Dikerogammarus villosus, Gammarus roeselii, Gammarus pulex and Gammarus fossarum. Tests were performed in micro- cosms in climate-controlled rooms at five different temperatures. Daphnia magna, a common water flea, served as prey. On ave- rage D. villosus showed the highest consumption rate of Daphnia magna over the entire temperature range, followed in decreas- ing order by G pulex, G roeselii and G fossarum. The predation rate of all species showed a distinct peak at 20~c. correction of predation rates for body size gave somewhat different results. D. villosus is then still the most predatory of all gammaridean spe- cies tested followed by G. pulex, G. fossarum and G roeselii. The outcome of the Daphnia tests is consistent with results of other studies with different prey. This supports that the Daphnia test is a good and quick indicator of the predatory abilities in gam- maridean species at varying temperatures, and allows the prediction of how changing temperature regimes influence invasion impacts

Recent invasions by non-native gobiid fish species that are ongoing in the western european rivers Rhine and Meuse, will lead to interactions with native benthic fish species. Since both non-native gobiids and native benthic species are bottom dwelling species with a preference for shelter during at least part of their life cycle, it is likely that competition for shelter will occur between these non-native and native species when shelter is a limiting factor. To investigate the importance of this mecha- nism for species replacements, various habitat choice experiments were conducted between two common native benthic fish spe- cies （cottus perifretum and Barbatula barbatula） and four invasive non-native gobiid species （Proterorhinus semilunaris, Neogo- bius melanostomus, N. kessleri and N. fluviatilis）. The first series of single specimen experiments determined the habitat choice of each individual fish species. In a second series of competition experiments, shifts in habitat choice in comparison with the previ- ously observed habitat choice, were determined when a native benthic fish species co-occurred with non-native gobiid species. Native c. perifretum displayed a significant shift in habitat choice in co-occurrence with the gobiids N. kessleri or P. semilunaris. c. perifretum was outcompeted and moved from the available shelter place to less preferred habitat types. During the competition experiments no change in habitat choice of B. barbatula was shown. Our study therefore suggests that competition for shelter is likely to occur in rivers invaded by N. kessleri and P. semilunaris at sites where shelter is limiting

BAcKGROUND For optimizing fecal immunochemical test(FIT)-based screening programs,reducing the rate of missed colorectal cancers(cRcs)by FIT(FIT-interval cRcs)is an important *** of the molecular make-up of these missed lesions could facilitate more accurate detection of all(precursor)*** To compare the molecular make-up of FIT-interval cRcs to lesions that are detected by FIT[screen-detected cRcs(SD-cRcs)].MeTHODS FIT-interval cRcs observed in a Dutch pilot-program of FIT-based screening were compared to a control group of SD-cRcs in a 1:2 ratio,resulting in 27 FIT-interval cRc and 54 *** analyses included microsatellite instability(MSI),cpG island methylator phenotype(cIMP),DNA sequence mutations and copy number alterations(cNAs).ReSULTS Although no significant differences were reached,FIT-interval cRcs were more often cIMP positive and MSI positive(33%cIMP in FIT-interval cRcs vs 21%in SD-cRcs(P=0.274);19%MSI in FIT-interval cRcs vs 12%in SD-cRcs(P=0.469)),and showed more often serrated pathway associated features such as BRAF(30%vs 12%,P=0.090)and PTeN(15%vs 2.4%,P=0.063)*** mutations,a classic feature of the adenoma-carcinoma-sequence,were more abundant in SD-cRcs(68%vs 40%in FIT-interval cRcs P=0.035).Regarding cNAs differences between the two groups;FIT-interval cRcs less often showed gains at the regions 8p11.22-q24.3(P=0.009),and more often gains at 20p13-p12.1(P=0.039).cONcLUSION Serrated pathway associated molecular features seem to be more common in FIT-interval cRcs,while classic adenoma carcinoma pathway associated molecular features seem to be more common in *** indicates that proximal serrated lesions may be overrepresented among FITinterval cRcs.
