This article discusses the measurement and simulation of a first generation prototype of Virtual Natural Lighting Solutions （VNLS）, which are systems that can artificially provide natural lighting as well as a realistic outside view, with properties comparable to those of real windows and skylights. Examples of employing Radiance as a simulation tool to predict the lighting performance of such solutions are shown, for a particular case study of a VNLS prototype displaying variations of a simplified view of overcast, clear, and partly cloudy skies. Measurement and simulation were conducted to evaluate the iUuminance distribution on workptane level. The key point of this study is to show that simulations can be used to compare an actual VNLS prototype with a hypothetical real window under the same sky scenes, which was physically not possible, since the test room was not located at the building＇s facade. It is found that the investigated prototype yields a less rapidly drop iUuminance distribution and a larger average illuminance than the corresponding real window, under the overcast （52 lx compared to 28 lx） and partly cloudy （102 lx compared to 80 lx） sky scenes. Under the clear sky scene, the real window yields a larger averase illuminance （97 lx） compared to the prototype （71 lx）, due to the influence of direct sunlight.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence rates of HIV1/2 antibodies, HBV and HcV antibodies among voluntary blood donors and to estimate the residual risk of HIV, HBV and HcV infection among blood donors in Bukavu. We conducted a follow-up cohort study of volunteer blood donors who have made at least two blood donations in Bukavu (DRc) between January 2010 and December 2012. We recorded 2986 volunteer blood donors during the study period. The residual risk of viral transmission associated with the serological window was considered as equals to the incidence rate multiplied by the duration of the serological window period divided by 365. Seroprevalence in volunteer blood donors in Bukavu was 1.1% for HIV 1/2 antibodies, 4.0% for HBs Ag and 2.1% for hepatitis c antibody. The number of conversion between two blood donations (incident cases) were observed is 8, 12 and 37 donors respectively for HIV 1/2, HcV and hepatitis B between 2010 and 2012. Incidence rates reported for 1000 person-years were 11.0 for HIV, 51.7 for HBV and 17.1 for HcV. The residual risk as estimated from the window was 0.6 per 1000 donations or 1/1.515 donations for HIV, 3.1 per 1000 donations or 1/329 for HcV and 7.9 per 1000 donations or 1/126 donations for hepatitis B. The residual risk is high. The screening tests are not enough to ensure safe blood. The reduction of residual risk would be achieved through the effectiveness of preventive measures taken for transfusion chain, before and after the biological qualification of blood donation.

Porin A (PorA), which determines the serosubtype of Neisseria meningitidis, is the main antigen of a candidate vaccine against serogroup B meningococci,which has been shown to induce high-avidity antibodies in children. We characterized the immune response of children after convalescing from meningococcal infection with a serosubtype P1.7-2,4 strain. Acute-and convalescent-phase sera of 21 c hildren with meningococcal septic shock caused by strains with PorA subtype P 1. 7-2,4 were collected. The serum bactericidal antibody titers, IgG isotype distr ibution, and antibody avidity were measured. We determined whether the differenc es in avidity of anti-outermembrane vesicle antibodies were PorA specific. Seru m bactericidal activity against H44/76 P 1.7-2,4 was convalescent sera. The IgG i sotype distribution of the convalescent sera was dominated by IgG1, followed by IgG3 , whereas no IgG2 or IgG4 was found. The geometric mean avidity index (GMAI ) of convalescent sera measured against a strain with the identical subtype as t he infective isolate was significantly higher than that against a strain with a heterologous PorA subtype or a PorA negative mutant strain (57 versus 35 and 23 %, respectively; p = 0.005 and p c mean avidity titers were h ighest for P1.7-2,4, corresponding with the highest GMAI. The GMAI after invasi ve meningococcal disease was lower than after vaccination of healthy toddlers wi th a monovalent P1.7-2,4 outer membrane vesicle vaccine.
