Depression and race affect hospitalization costs of heart failure patients

Objective:Depression and anxiety are frequently observed in heart failure(HF)patients;however,the effect of such factors on hospitalization costs of HF patients,and whether such costs vary by race and gender remain poorly *** analysis delineated the preva-lence of depression/anxiety among HF patients and estimated the effect of race and gender on hospitalization ***:We examined the 2008 files of the Tennessee Hospital Discharge Data System(HDDS)on patients(≥20 years of age)with a primary diagnosis of HF(ICD-9 codes 402,404,and 428)along with demographic data,depression/anxiety diagnoses,hospital costs,and *** the HF sample(n=16,889)53%were female and 23%were *** and gender differences in hospital costs were evaluated for the following three groups:(1)HF patients with depression/anxiety(HF+D);(2)HF-only patients without depression/anxiety(HFO);and(3)HF patients with other mental diagnoses(HF+M).Results:HF was significantly(p<0.000)higher among blacks compared to whites,and higher among males than *** 25%of HF patients had depression/anxiety(more whites and females were depressed).HF patients averaged more than 3 comorbidities(blacks had a greater number of comorbidities and hospitalization cost for the year).Costs were higher among HF+D patients compared to HFO *** HF+D patients,costs were higher for black males compared with white *** cost patterns prevailed largely because of higher comorbidities that required more re-admissions and longer hospital ***:Race and depression/anxiety are associated with increased hospitalization costs of HF *** higher costs among blacks reflect the higher burden of comorbidities,such as hypertension and diabetes,which calls for widespread dissemination,adoption,and implementation of proven interventions for the control of these comorbidities.

Nanoarchitectured LiMn_2O_4/Graphene/ZnO Composites as Electrodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

LiMn2O4 nanoparticles are facilely synthesized using a sol-gel processing method. Graphene is added to LiMn2O4 electrode aiming at increasing specific capacity and improving rate capability. In order to further improve cycling stability of LiMn2O4/graphene electrode, atomic layer deposition （ALD） is used to deposit ultrathin ZnO coating composed of six ZnO ALD layers and modify the surface of either LiMn2O4/graphene electrode or individual LiMn2O4 particles to form nanoarchitectured LiMn2O4/graphene/ZnO electrodes. Both ZnO-ALD-modified LiMn2O4/graphene electrodes demonstrate enhanced cycling performance at 1C, retaining the final discharge capacity above 122 mA h g 1 after 100 electrochemical cycles, which is higher than 115 mA h g-1 of pristine LiMn2O4/graphene electrode and 109 mA h g-1 of bare LiMn2O4 electrode. The improved electrochemical performance of nanoarchitectured LiMn2O4/graphene/ZnO electrodes can be attributed to the cooperative effects from high electronic conductivity of graphene sheets to facilitate electron transportation and effective protection of ZnO ALD coating to restrict Mn dissolution and electrolyte decomposition.

In this study,we demonstrated the label-free continuous separation and enrichment of Bacillus subtilis populations based on length using viscoelastic ***,a gram-positive,rod-shaped bacterium,has been widely used as a model organism and an industrial *** can be arranged in different morphological forms,such as single rods,chains,and clumps,which reflect differences in cell types,phases of growth,genetic variation,and changing environmental *** ability to prepare *** populations with a uniform length is important for basic biological studies and efficient industrial ***,we systematically investigated how flow rate ratio,poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)concentration,and channel length affected the length-based separation of *** *** lateral positions of *** cells with varying morphologies in a straight rectangular microchannel were found to be dependent on cell length under the co-flow of viscoelastic and Newtonian ***,we evaluated the ability of the viscoelastic microfluidic device to separate the two groups of *** cells by length(i.e.,1-5μm and>5μm)in terms of extraction purity(EP),extraction yield(EY),and enrichment factor(EF)and confirmed that the device could separate heterogeneous populations of bacteria using elasto-inertial effects.

Integrins and their potential roles in mammalian pregnancy

Integrins are a highly complex family of receptors that, when expressed on the surface of cells, can mediate reciprocal cell-to-cell and cell-to-extracellular matrix(ECM) interactions leading to assembly of integrin adhesion complexes(IACs) that initiate many signaling functions both at the membrane and deeper within the cytoplasm to coordinate processes including cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, survival, differentiation, and metabolism. All metazoan organisms possess integrins, and it is generally agreed that integrins were associated with the evolution of multicellularity, being essential for the association of cells with their neighbors and surroundings, during embryonic development and many aspects of cellular and molecular biology. Integrins have important roles in many aspects of embryonic development, normal physiology, and disease processes with a multitude of functions discovered and elucidated for integrins that directly influence many areas of biology and medicine, including mammalian pregnancy, in particular implantation of the blastocyst to the uterine wall, subsequent placentation and conceptus(embryo/fetus and associated placental membranes) development. This review provides a succinct overview of integrin structure, ligand binding, and signaling followed with a concise overview of embryonic development, implantation, and early placentation in pigs, sheep, humans, and mice as an example for rodents. A brief timeline of the initial localization of integrin subunits to the uterine luminal epithelium(LE) and conceptus trophoblast is then presented, followed by sequential summaries of integrin expression and function during gestation in pigs, sheep, humans, and rodents. As appropriate for this journal, summaries of integrin expression and function during gestation in pigs and sheep are in depth, whereas summaries for humans and rodents are brief. Management of afferent loop obstruction from recurrent metastatic pancreatic cancer using a venting gastrojejunostomy

Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive malignancy poten-tially curable with surgical intervention. Following pan-creaticoduodenectomy for suspected pancreatic head malignancy, patients have a high risk for both immedi-ate and delayed problems due to surgical complica-tions and recurrent disease. We report here a patient with pancreatic cancer treated with pancreaticoduode-nectomy who developed recurrent disease resulting in obstruction of the afferent limb. The patient developed biliary obstruction and cholangitis at presentation. Her biliary tree failed to dilate which precluded safe percu-taneous biliary decompression. During surgical explo-ration, she was found to have a dilated afferent limb at the level of the transverse mesocolon. The patient underwent decompression of the afferent limb as well as the biliary tree using a venting gastrojejunostomy to the blind loop. This represents a novel surgical ap-proach for management of this complicated and diffi-cult problem.

Numerous studies links movement activity(e.g.,physical activity,sedentary behavior[SB],and sleep)with mental health or illness indicators during the COVID-19 pandemic;however,research has typically examined time-use behaviors independently,rather than considering daily activity as a 24-hour time-use *** cross-sec-tional study aimed to use compositional isotemporal analysis to estimate the association between reallocation of time-use behaviors and depression symptoms in young adults in ***(n=1475;68.0%of female;20.7[1.60]years)reported their time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity(MVPA),light physical activ-ity(LPA),SB,and *** SB with sleep,LPA,and MVPA at 5,10,or 15 min was signiﬁcantly associated with lower estimated depression symptoms *** example,adding MVPA from SB at 15 min was associated with lower depression symptoms scores(estimated difference:-0.13[-0.17,-0.09]).The associations between reallocation of time use behaviors with depression symptoms scores were slightly *** results emphasize the importance of increased MVPA and decreased SB as well as their mutual replacements for lowering the risks of depression symptoms in young adults during the COVID-19 *** results can inform policy to develop effective plans and strategies for mental health promotion.

Variation in risk factors of dementia among four elderly patient cohorts

AIM: To examine variation in risk factors that contributed to dementia among four elderly cohorts by race and gender. METHODS: We examined 2008 Tennessee Hospital Discharged database for vascular factors that play a role in both stroke and dementia. Risk factors for dementia were examined for black and white patients aged 65+. Four race-gender groups of patients-white males(WM), black males(BM), white females(WF), and black females(BF) were compared for prevalence of dementia and stroke. A logistic model predicting dementia in each group separately used several vascular factors affectingdementia directly or indirectly through stroke. RESULTS: Three point six percent of patients hospitalized in 2008 had dementia and dementia was higher among females than males(3.9% vs 3.2%, P < 0.001), and higher among blacks than whites(4.2% vs 3.5%, P < 0.000). Further, BF had higher prevalence of dementia than WF(4.2% vs 3.8%, P < 0.001); similarly BM had more dementia than WM(4.1% vs 3.1%, P < 0.001). In logistic regression models, however, different patterns of risk factors were associated with dementia in four groups: among WF and WM, hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and stroke predicted dementia. Among BF and BM, only stroke and diabetes were related to ***: Aggressive management of risk factors(hypertension and diabetes) may subsequently reduce stroke and dementia hospitalization.
