Enhanced hydrogen production activity over BiOX–TiO2 under solar irradiation:Improved charge transfer through bismuth oxide clusters

A series of titania nanoparticles and nanotubes deposited with various quantities of bismuth（Bi） were prepared via sol-gel and hydrothermal methods, respectively. They were then characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy（XRD）, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy（XPS）, UV–Vis diffused reflectance spectra（DRS）, photoluminescence spectra（PLS）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, energy dispersive analysis of X-rays（EDAX）, and BET surface analysis. These catalysts were employed for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen from a mixture of pure water and glycerol under solar light irradiation. The presence of the Bispecies was found to play a vital role in enhancing activity while minimizing electron hole recombination（relative to bare TiO）. The nanotubes exhibited better activity than the nanoparticles of Bi-deposited TiO, showing the significance of the morphology; however, photocatalytic activity is predominantly dependent on the deposition of bismuth. The activity increased by approximately an order of magnitude at the optimum concentration of Bi deposited over TiO（2 wt%）. The presence of the Bispecies played a vital role in minimizing electron hole recombination, resulting in higher activity compared to bare TiO.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Isoproturon Pesticide on C, N and S Doped TiO2

TiO2 doped with C, N and S (TCNS photocatalyst) was prepared by hydrolysis process using titanium iso-propoxide and thiourea. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), BET surface area, FTIR and diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The results showed that the prepared catalysts are anatase type and nanosized par-ticles. The catalysts exhibited stronger absorption in the visible light region with a red shift in the adsorption edge. The photocatalytic activity of TCNS photocatalysts was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of isoproturon pesticide in aqueous solution. In the present study the maximum activity was achieved for TCNS5 catalyst at neutral pH with 1 g L-1 catalyst amount and at 1.14 x 10-4 M concentration of the pesticide solution. The TCNS photocatalysts showed higher phtocatalytic activity under solar light irradiation. This is attributed to the synergetic effects of red shift in the absorption edge, higher surface area and the inhibition of charge carrier recombination process.

Bismuth Modified Porous Silica Preparation,Characterization and Photocatalytic Activity Evaluation for Degradation of Isoproturon

Porous silica prepared by using an acrylic emulsion has been impregnated with bismuth ion resulting in Bi2Si05 species containing surface. The as-prepared materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy （XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy （UV-Vis DRS）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy dispersive analysis of X-ray （EDAX）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） and N2 adsorption/desorption techniques. EDAX analysis confirms the penetration of bismuth ions into the framework of silica to form Bi2SiO5, which is substantiated by XRD. The UV-Vis DRS shows that the catalysts are optically active and XPS confirms the inclusion of bismuth into the framework of silica. FTIR spectra illustrate the formation of Bi-O-Si linkages in the porous silica framework. SEM and TEM show the spherical morphology, whereas N2 adsorption/desorption study confirms the porosity of the prepared materials. The photocatalytic activity of the material is evaluated for the degradation of isoproturon herbicide and it is found that the material is active as compared to the commercial P-25 Degussa TiO2.

CURING KINETICS AND THERMAL STABILITY OF EPOXY BLENDS CONTAINING PHOSPHOROUS-OXIRANE WITH AROMATIC AMIDE-AMINE AS CURING AGENTS

This article describes the synthesis of a series of aromatic amide-amines and their potential use as epoxy hardeners. These amines were synthesized by the reaction of L-phenylalanine （PA） with diamines of different structures i.e. 1,4- phenylene diamine （PD）, 1,5-diamino naphthalene （N）, 4,4＇-（9-fluorenyllidene）-dianiline （F）, 4,4＇-diaminodiphenyl sulphide （DS） and 3,4＇-oxydianiline （O） in a stoichiometric ratio （I ：1）. Structural characterization of synthesized amide-amines was done with the help of elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques viz. FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. An epoxy blend was prepared by mixing tris（glycidyloxy） phosphine oxide （TGPO） with conventional epoxy i.e. diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A （DGEBA） in an equivalent ratio of 2：3 to incorporate phosphorous into the main chain. The curing kinetics of the epoxy blend with synthesized aromatic amide-amines was investigated by non-isothermal DSC technique using multiple heating rate method （5, 10, 15 and 20 K/min.）. The activation energies were determined by fitting the experimental data into Kissinger and Ozawa kinetic models. The activation energies obtained through Ozawa method were slightly higher than those of Kissinger method but were comparable. However, both the energies were found to be dependent on the structure of amines. The thermal stability and weight loss behavior of isothermally cured thermosets were also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis （TGA） in nitrogen atmosphere. All the samples showed improved thermal stability in terms of char yield than using only amines as hardeners.

Variability and divergence in horsegram (Dolichos uniflorus)

Horsegram is an important and unexploited tropic and sub-tropic legume crop grown mostly in dry land agriculture. The study involving 23 cultivars of horsegram （Dolichos uniflorus） was conducted at the Seed Research ＆ Technology Centre in Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, India during the early spring seasons of 2008 and 2009 to assess the nature and magnitude of variability in the existing species and also to identify diverse parents for use in further breeding programmes. The results indicated significant differences among the 23 cultivars for all characters studied, indicating the presence of sufficient genetic variation. High variability and heritability coupled with high genetic advance were reported for seed yield per plant and pod hulm per plant, indicating additive gene action and a possible scope for the improvement of these characters. Mahalanobis D2 statistics grouped all the 23 cultivars of horsegram into six ,clusters. The maximum inter cluster distance （62.39） was noticed between cluster IV （HG 50） and cluster V （HG 11）. The maximum Jntra cluster distance ranged from 0 （clusters III, IV, V and VI） to 15.17 （cluster I）, indicating that the genotypes in these clusters were relatively more diverse than the genotypes within other clusters. Seed yield per plant contributed the maximum （33.20%） to the genetic divergence.

Nonlinear oscillations in micro-and nanoelectromechanical systems have emerged as an exciting research area in recent years due to their promise in realizing low-power,scalable,and reconfigurable mechanical memory and logic ***,we report ultralow-power mechanical memory operations utilizing the nonlinear oscillation regime of GaN microcantilevers with embedded piezotransistive AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistors as highly sensitive deflection *** between the high and low oscillatory states of the nonlinear oscillation regime was demonstrated using a novel phase-controlled opto-mechanical excitation setup,utilizing a piezo actuator and a pulsed laser as the primary and secondary excitation sources,***-based photoacoustic excitation was amplified through plasmonic absorption in Au nanoparticles deposited on a ***,the minimum switching energy required for reliable memory operations was reduced to less than a picojoule(pJ),which translates to one of the lowest ever reported,when normalized for mass.

Study of hsCRP, adiponectin, NF-κB in low bodyweight, standard bodyweight and obese subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus in India

Introduction: Low bodyweight type 2 DM is a distinct clinical entity having many inherent peculiarities seen in India and developing countries, constituting 11% to 25% of type 2 diabetic subjects. Our study aimed at assessing the prevalence of inflammatory markers like hsCRP, adiponectin and NF-κB expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in subjects with type 2 DM in relation to BMI. Materials and Methods: 57 consecutive type 2 diabetics were recruited for study, classified as Low Bodyweight (A = BMI < 18.5), Standard weight (B = BMI 18.5 - 24.99) and Obese (C = BMI ≥ 25). Group D comprised 14 healthy controls. They were evaluated for clinical parameters, FBG, 2hrPPBG, HbA1c, lipid profile and above mentioned inflammatory markers. Results: Serum hsCRP was significantly higher in all group of diabetics as compared to Group D but was lowest in Group A. Adiponectin levels were highest in Group D, similar in Groups B and C but lowest in Group A. NF-κB expression, though higher in diabetic subjects than controls (OD = 0.041 ± 0.006), was least in Group A (OD = 0.045 ± 0.005). Discussion and Conclusion: Our study revealed that Indians with type 2DM are in a pro-inflamematory state. Low bodyweight type 2 diabetics had the least pro-inflammatory load. This further supported the earlier observation of lesser macrovascular disease load and testifying that Low Bodyweight type2DM constitutes a distinct entity.

Source Code Prioritization Using Forward Slicing for Exposing Critical Elements in a Program

Even after thorough testing, a few bugs still remain in a program with moderate complexity. These residual bugs are randomly distributed throughout the code. We have noticed that bugs in some parts of a program cause frequent and severe failures compared to those in other parts. Then, it is necessary to take a decision about what to test more and what to test less within the testing budget. It is possible to prioritize the methods and classes of an object-oriented program according to their potential to cause failures. For this, we propose a program metric called influence metric to find the influence of a program element on the source code. First, we represent the source code into an intermediate graph called extended system dependence graph. Then, forward slicing is applied on a node of the graph to get the influence of that node. The influence metric for a method m in a program shows the number of statements of the program which directly or indirectly use the result produced by method m. We compute the influence metric for a class c based on the influence metric of all its methods. As influence metric is computed statically, it does not show the expected behavior of a class at run time. It is already known that faults in highly executed parts tend to more failures. Therefore, we have considered operational profile to find the average execution time of a class in a system. Then, classes are prioritized in the source code based on influence metric and average execution time. The priority of an element indicates the potential of the element to cause failures. Once all program elements have been prioritized, the testing effort can be apportioned so that the elements causing frequent failures will be tested thoroughly. We have conducted experiments for two well-known case studies -- Library Management System and Trading Automation System -- and successfully identified critical elements in the source code of each case study. Investigation of structural,magnetic and optical properties of rare earth substituted bismuth ferrite

Polycrystalline BiFeO3 and rare earth substituted ***3 （BRFO, R=Y, Ho and Er） compounds were prepared by rapid solid state sintering technique. Structural phase analysis indicated that all the compounds stabilized in rhombohedral structure （R3c space group） and a small orthorhombic phase fraction was observed in BRFO compounds. From the Raman spectra results, the changes in the phonon frequencies （A1） and line widths suggested lattice distortion in the BRFO compounds as was evidenced in the XRD analysis. Compared to the linear variation of magnetization with magnetic field （M-H） shown by BFO, an obvious M-H loop was observed in BRFO compounds which could be due to the suppression of space modulated spin structure and was explained on the basis of weak ferromagnetism and field induced spin reorientation. UV-Vis spectroscopy evidenced a change in local FeO6 envi- ronment due to shift in the 6Alg→4T2g energy transition band. BRFO compounds with improved remnant magnetization and coercive field are applicable for magnetoelectric devices.
