Detection of CO2 and O2 by iron loaded LTL zeolite films

Detection of oxygen and carbon dioxide is important in the field of chemical and biosensors for atmosphere and biosystem monitoring and fermentation processes. The present study reports on the preparation of zeolite films doped with iron nanoparticles for detection of CO2 and O2 in gas phase. Pure nanosized LTL type zeolite with monomodal particle size distribution loaded with iron （Fe-LTL） was prepared under hydrothermal condition from colloidal precursor suspensions. The zeolite was loaded with iron to different levels by ion exchange. The Fe-LTL suspensions were used for preparation of thin films on silicon wafers via spin coating method. The reduction of the iron in the zeolite films was carried out under H2 flow （50% H2 in Ar） at 300 ℃. The presence of iron nanoparticles is proved by in situ ultra-violet-visible spectroscopy. The properties of the films including surface roughness, thickness, porosity, and mechanical stability were studied. In addition, the loading and distribution of iron in the zeolite films were investigated. The Fe-LTL zeolite films were used to detect O2 and CO2 in a concentration dependent mode, followed by IR spectroscopy. The changes in the IR bands at 855 and 642 cm^-1 （Fe O-H and Fe-O bending vibrations） and at 2363 and 2333 cm^-1 （CO2 asymmetric stretching） corresponding to the presence of O2 and CO2, respectively, were evaluated. The response to O2 and CO2 was instant, which was attributed to great accessibility of the iron in the nanosized zeolite crystals. The saturation of the Fe-LTL films with CO2 and O2 at each concentration was reached within less than a minute. The Fe-LTL films detected both oxygen and carbon dioxide in contrast, to the pure LTL zeolite film.

Adhesion and friction in hard and soft contacts: theory and experiment

This paper is devoted to an analytical,numerical,and experimental analysis of adhesive contacts subjected to tangential *** particular,it addresses the phenomenon of instable,jerky movement of the boundary of the adhesive contact zone and its dependence on the surface *** argue that the"adhesion instabilities"with instable movements of the contact boundary cause energy dissipation similarly to the elastic instabilities *** leads to different effective works of adhesion when the contact area expands and *** effect is interpreted in terms of“friction”to the movement of the contact *** consider two main contributions to friction:(a)boundary line contribution and(b)area *** normal and rolling contacts,the only contribution is due to the boundary friction,while in sliding both contributions may be *** boundary contribution prevails in very small,smooth,and hard contacts(as e.g.,diamond-like-carbon(DLC)coatings),while the area contribution is prevailing in large soft *** suggest that the friction due to adhesion instabilities is governed by"Johnson parameter".Experiments suggest that for soft bodies like rubber,the stresses in the contact area can be characterized by a constant critical *** were carried out using a setup allowing for observing the contact area with a camera placed under a soft transparent rubber *** contacts show a great variety of instabilities when sliding with low velocity–depending on the indentation depth and the shape of the contacting *** instabilities can be classified as"microscopic"caused by the roughness or chemical inhomogeneity of the surfaces and"macroscopic"which appear also in smooth *** latter may be related to interface waves which are observed in large contacts or at small indentation *** simulations were performed using the Boundary Element method(BEm).

60 years of Rabinowicz' criterion for adhesive wear

60 years ago, in 1958, Ernest Rabinowicz published a 5 page paper titled "The effect of size on the looseness of wear fragments" where he suggested a criterion determining the minimum size of wear particles. The criterion of Rabinowicz is based on the consideration of the interplay of elastic energy stored in "asperities" and the work of separation needed for detaching a wear particle. He was probably the first researcher who explicitly emphasized the role of adhesion in friction and wear. In a recent paper in Nature Communications, Aghababaei, Warner and molinari confirmed the criterion of Rabinowicz by means of quasi-molecular dynamics and illustrated the exact mechanism of the transition from plastic smoothing to formation of wear debris. This latter paper promoted the criterion of Rabinowicz to a new paradigm for current studies of adhesive wear. The size arguments of Rabinowicz can be applied in the same form also to many other problems, such as brittle-ductile transition during indentation, cutting of materials or ultimate strength of nano-composites.

Electrical energy is essential for modern society to sustain economic *** soaring demand for the electrical energy,together with an awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels,has been driving a shift towards the utilization of solar ***,traditional solar energy solutions often require extensive spaces for a panel installation,limiting their practicality in a dense urban *** overcome the spatial constraint,researchers have developed transparent photovoltaics(TPV),enabling windows and facades in vehicles and buildings to generate electric *** TPV advancements are focused on improving both transparency and power output to rival commercially available silicon solar *** this review,we first briefly introduce wavelength-and non-wavelengthselective strategies to achieve *** of merit and theoretical limits of TPVs are discussed to comprehensively understand the status of current TPV *** we highlight recent progress in different types of TPVs,with a particular focus on solution-processed thin-film photovoltaics(PVs),including colloidal quantum dot PVs,metal halide perovskite PVs and organic *** applications of TPVs are also reviewed,with emphasis on agrivoltaics,smart windows and ***,current challenges and future opportunities in TPV research are pointed out.

A rule-free workflow for the automated generation of databases from scientific literature

In recent times,transformer networks have achieved state-of-the-art performance in a wide range of natural language processing *** we present a workflow based on the fine-tuning of BERT models for different downstream tasks,which results in the automated extraction of structured information from unstructured natural language in scientific *** to existing methods for the automated extraction of structured compound-property relations from similar sources,our workflow does not rely on the definition of intricate grammar ***,it can be adapted to a new task without requiring extensive implementation efforts and *** test our data-extraction workflow by automatically generating a database for Curie temperatures and one for band *** are then compared with manually curated datasets and with those obtained with a state-of-the-art rule-based ***,in order to showcase the practical utility of the automatically extracted data in a material-design workflow,we employ them to construct machine-learning models to predict Curie temperatures and band *** general,we find that,although more noisy,automatically extracted datasets can grow fast in volume and that such volume partially compensates for the inaccuracy in downstream tasks.

The history and assessment of effectiveness of soil erosion control measures deployed in Russia

Research activities aimed at design and application of soil conservation measures for reduction of soil losses from cultivated fields started in Russia in the last quarter of the 19th century.A network of"zonal agrofor-estry melioration experimental stations"was organized in the different landscape zones of Russia in the first half of the 20th *** main task of the experiments was to develop effective soil conservation measures for Russian climatic,soil and land use *** most widespread and large-scale introduction of coun-termeasures to cope with soil erosion by water and wind into agricultural practice supported by serious governmental investments took place during the Soviet Union period after the Second World *** the Soviet Union collapse in 1991,general deterioration of the agricultural economy sector and the absence of investments resulted in cessation of organized soil conservation measures application at the nation-wide ***,some of the long-term erosion control measures such as forest shelter belts,artificial slope terracing,water diversion dams above formerly active gully heads survived until the *** the case study of sediment redistribution within the small cultivated catchment presented in this paper an attempt was made to evaluate average annual erosion rates on arable slopes with and without soil conservation measures for two time *** has been found that application of conservation measures on cultivated slopes within the experimental part of the case study catchment has led to a decrease of average soil loss rates by at least 2.52.8 *** figures obtained are in good agreement with previously published results of direct monitoring of snowmelt erosion rates,reporting approximately a 3-fold decrease of average snowmelt erosion rates in the experimental sub-catchment compared to a traditionally cultivated control sub-catchment.A substantial decrease of soil erosion rates on arable slopes has been equall

Soil erosion: An important indicator for the assessment of land degradation neutrality in Russia

This review of soil erosion(SE)studies in Russia focuses on two main tasks:(i)ensuring the completeness and reliability of SE data in Russia,a large country(17.1 million km2)with a variety of natural and socio-economic causes of land degradation,(ii)assessing the possibility of including a SE indicator among the indicators of land degradation neutrality(LDN).A wide range of statistical,remote sensing,mathematical modeling *** results of scientific and field studies obtained at different levels were *** is asserted that in Russia the total area of eroded lands and those under erosion risk occupy more than 50%of all agricultural lands,whereas soil fertility of croplands decreased in Soviet time(from 1950s to 1980s)by 30-60%only due to water ***,recent scientific studies indicate a decrease in erosion rate and in the area of eroded land during the last 30-40 years as a result of abandonment of arable land and subsequent overgrown with natural *** climate change resulting in decrease of the depth of soil freezing,flow of spring runoff also adds to the decrease of soil *** SE indicator was suggested as an important complement to three global LDN *** national and subnational level,it can be interpreted through such indices as"Rate of soil loss"(ton ha-1 yr-1)and"Total soil loss"(1000 tons,in certain area during selected time period).At local level the set of indices can be wider and site-specific,including those obtained through remote sensing data by using the classifier of thematic applications of remote sensing technologies;the example was tested at the local site.
