The distinction between sporadic and genetic behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia(bvFTD)regarding some neuropsychological(NP)features remains ***,progranulin(GRN)-associated bvFTD frequently presents with early episodic memory impairment and some degree of parietal dysfunction which are supporters of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)*** this context,we aimed to characterize the NP profile of GRN-bvFTD as compared to sporadic-bvFTD and AD in patients with mild dementia(Mini-Mental State Examination score≥17 and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale score≤*** identified 21 patients at Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra,Portugal with GRN mutations belonging to fifteen different *** our focus was bvFTD variants,FTD-related aphasic forms(3 patients)were *** remaining 18 GRN-bvFTD were further matched with 18 sporadic-bvFTD and 18 AD patients according to disease staging,age and *** patients completed the Mini-Mental State Examination,Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)and a comprehensive NP assessment *** were converted into *** between groups in individual NP measures and NP domains were assessed through non-parametric tests(Kruskal-Wallis test analysis)and eta squared(ŋ2)was calculated as a measure of effect *** comparisons show that GRN patients have worse performances on verbal retrieval processes(P=0.039,ŋ2=0.110)and visuoconstructive abilities(P=0.039,ŋ2=0.190)than sporadic bvFTD *** compared to AD,GRN patients present a higher impairment in frontal(P=0.001,ŋ2=0.211)and parietal(P=0.041,ŋ2=0.129)measures and a better performance in memory tasks(P=0.020,ŋ2=0.120).Sporadic-bvFTD forms are worse than AD in frontal measures(P=0.032,ŋ2=0.200),being better in both memory(P=0.010,ŋ2=0.131)and visuospatial skills(P=0.023,ŋ2=0.231).Considering these results,we conclude that GRN-bvFTD patients present a NP profile that associates the typical patterns of FTD and AD ***

Logistic Regression Models have been widely used in many areas of research, namely in health sciences, to study risk factors associated to diseases. Many population based surveys, such as Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), are constructed assuming complex sampling, i.e., probabilistic, stratified and multistage sampling, with unequal weights in the observations;this complex design must be taken into account in order to have reliable results. However, this very relevant issue usually is not well analyzed in the literature. The aim of the study is to specify the logistic regression model with complex sample design, and to demonstrate how to estimate it using the R software survey package. More specifically, we used Mozambique Demographic Health and Survey data 2011 (MDHS 2011) to illustrate how to correct for the effect of sample design in the particular case of estimating the risk factors associated to the probability of using mosquito bed nets. Our results show that in the presence of complex sampling, appropriate methods must be used both in descriptive and inferential statistics.

In a building, the paint coating applied to interior walls conveys their aesthetic character and also performs an important function of protection. It is a construction component which is exposed to agents of deterioration related to its use, needing the regular evaluation of its state of repair. The completed model supports the performance of such periodic inspections and the monitoring of interior wall maintenance, using Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Used during an inspection visit, the application allows users to consult a database of irregularities, normally associated with paint coating, classified by the most probable causes and by recommended repair methodologies. In addition, with this model, a chromatic scale related to the degree of deterioration of the coating, defined as a function of the time between the dates of the application of the paint and the scheduled repainting, can be attributed to each element of coating monitored. This use of VR technology allows inspections and the evaluation of the degree of wear and tear of materials to be carried out in a highly direct and intuitive manner. The computer application has a positive contribution to make in the field of construction, using as it does Information Technology (IT) tools which give access to innovative technology with it capacity for interaction and visualization.

Togo’s economy is heavily dependent on rainfed agriculture. Therefore, anomalies in precipitation can have a significant impact on crop yields, affecting food production and security. Thus, monitoring anomalous climate conditions in Togo through the combination of precipitation satellite-based data and Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) help anticipate the development of drought scenarios or excessive rainfall, allowing farmers to adjust their strategies and minimize losses. Continuous and adequate spatial monitoring of these climate anomalies provided by satellite-based products can be central to an effective early warning system (EWS) implementation in Togo. Precipitation satellite-based products have been presented invaluable tools for assessing droughts and , offering timely and comprehensive data that supports a wide range of applications. In this study, we applied the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) rainfall product, a unified satellite global precipitation product developed by NASA, to identify and characterize the severity of dry and wet climate events in Togo during the period from 2001 to 2019. The Standard Precipitation Index (SPI), as the main index recommended by the World Meteorological Organization to monitor drought wide world, was selected as the reference index to monitor dry and wet climate events across Togo regions. The results show two distinct major climate periods in Togo in the timeframe analyzed (2001-2019), one dominated by wet events from 2008 to 2010, and a second marked by severe and extreme dry events from 2013 to 2015;MERG rainfall and SPI combination were able to capture these events consistently.

Gastric cancer is considered one of the most deadly tumors worldwide. Even with the decline in its incidence, the mortality rate of this disease has remained high, mainly due to its late diagnosis and to the lack of precise prognostic markers. The main purpose of this review is to present genetic, epigenetic and proteomic molecular markers that may be used in a diagnostic and prognostic manner and to discuss the pros and cons of each type of marker for improving clinical practice. In this sense, we observed that the use of genetic markers, especially mutations and polymorphisms, should be carefully considered, as they are strongly affected by ethnicity. Proteomic-based markers show promise, but the higher costs of the associated techniques con-tinue to make this approach expensive for routine use. Alternatively, epigenetic markers appear to be very promising, as they can be detected in bodily fluids as well as tissues. However, such markers must be used carefully because epigenetic changes may occur due to environmental factors and aging. Despite the advances in technology and its access, to date, there are few defined biomarkers of prognostic and diagnostic use for gastric tumors. Therefore, the use of a panel of several approaches(genetic, epigenetic and proteomic) should be considered the best alternative for clinical practice.

Iron homeostasis and H63D mutations in alcoholics with and without liver disease

MM： To evaluate the prevalence of HFE gene mutation and indices of disturbed iron homeostasis in alcoholics with and without liver disease. MetHODS： One hundred and fifty-three heavy drinkers （defined as alcohol consumption 〉 80 g/d for at least 5 years） were included in the study. These comprised 78 patients with liver disease [liver disease alcoholics （LDA）] in whom the presence of liver disease was confirmed by liver biopsy or clinical evidence of hepatic decompensation, and 75 subjects with no evidence of liver disease, determined by normal liver tests on two occasions [non-liver disease alcoholics （NLDA）], were consecutively enrolled. Serum markers of iron status and HFE C282Y and H63D mutations were determined. HFE genotyping was compared with data obtained in healthy blood donors from the same geographical area. RESULTS： Gender ratio was similar in both study groups. LDA patients were older than NLDA patients （52 ± 10 years vs 48 ± 11 years, P = 0.03）. One third and one fifth of the study population had serum transferrin saturation （TS） greater than 45% and 60% respectively. Serum iron levels were similar in both groups. However, LDA patients had higher TS （51 ± 27 vs 36 ± 13, P 〈 0.001） and ferritin levels （559 ± 607 ng/mL vs 159 ± 122 ng/mL, P 〈 0.001）, and lower total iron binding capacity （TIBC）（241 ± 88 μg/dL vs 279 ± 40 μg/dL, P = 0.001）. The odds ratio for having liver disease with TS greater than 45% was 2.20 （95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.37-3.54）. There was no difference in C282Y allelic frequency between the two groups. However, H63D was more frequent in LDA patients （0.25 vs 0.16, P = 0.03）. LDA patients had a greater probability of carrying at least one HFE mutation than NLDA patients （49.5% vs 31.6%, P = 0.02）. The odds ratio for LDA in patients with H63D mutation was 1.57 （95% CI： 1.02-2.40）. CONCLUSION： The present study confirms the presence of iron overload in alcoholics, which was more severe in the subset of subjects with liver disease,

Projecting Health Outcomes for Portuguese Ageing Population: Challenges and Opportunities

Objectives: To project health outcomes for the period 2011-2031, in the Portuguese population aged 65 years and over, considering the expected changes in its demographic and educational structure. Methods: Demographic projections were produced using the multistate cohort component method. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate current differences in health outcomes, using data from the Portuguese Health Survey. Such differences were applied to the projection results, in order to project the prevalence of “poor” self-reported health status, functional limitations and disability. Results: Our results point to a future improvement in the considered health outcomes. The prevalence of “poor” self-reported health status, functional limitations and disability will decrease in both genders, but will continue to be higher among women than men. Discussion: Beyond age and gender, other determinants of health, like education, should be considered when studying the possible evolution of health outcomes in an ageing population.
