Post-mortem Microstructural Study of Aluminous Refractory Brick Used in Channels of Blast Furnaces

Aluminous refractory materials with high alumina contents are widely used in the steel industry,and the higher the alumina content,the higher the working *** such as high refractoriness and thermal shock resistance lead these refractory materials to be used as channel linings of blast furnaces,where they are exposed to the attack by slag,molten steel,working cycles and sudden temperature changes between 25℃(room temperature)and 1520℃(the temperature of molten pig iron).In this work,microstructural changes in post-mortem aluminous refractory bricks were investigated by apparent porosity,X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray dispersion energy spectrometry(SEM/EDS).The results showed an increase in the apparent porosity and the bulk density and the presence of the phases mullite,sillimanite,alumina,and quartz in the post-mortem *** and magnesium were not detected in the microstructure of the post-mortem brick,indicating that slags did not corrode these refractory ***,the microstructural changes that occurred in the post-mortem bricks must be due to thermal *** the X-ray diffraction(XRD)test,mullite,sillimanite,quartz,andα-alumina phases were *** results indicate that the aluminous refractory was obtained from *** infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)it was possible to identify the vibration bands referring to the Si-O and Al-O *** increase in the porosity is a result of cracks caused by work cycles at high temperatures and the temperature gradient to which the refractory was subjected during *** the micrograph it was possible to identify the presence of acicular *** absence of magnesium and calcium in the microanalysis results by energy dispersed X-ray spectrometry(EDS)indicates that there was no infiltration by slag or liquid *** results indicate that the microstructural changes that occurred in t

The laser-induced relativistic shock waves are described. The shock waves can be created directly by a high irradiance laser or indirectly by a laser acceleration of a foil that collides with a second static foil. A special case of interest is the creation of laser-induced fusion where the created alpha particles create a detonation wave. A novel application is suggested with the shock wave or the detonation wave to ignite a pre-compressed target. In particular, the deuterium–tritium fusion is considered. It is suggested that the collision of two laser accelerated foils might serve as a novel relativistic accelerator for bulk material collisions.

Introduction: Naturally based treatments for osteoporosis are currently limited. The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether bovine colostrum supplementation can improve bone health in humans. Intraocular complications of IFN-α and ribavirin therapy in patients with chronic viral hepatitis C

We report a panel of severe inflammatory and vascular intraocular disorders occurring during interferon-alpha （IFN-α） treatment in eight hepatitis C virus （HCV）- infected patients. These events include three cases of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada like （VKH） disease （an association of panuveitis, retinal detachment, ear and meningeal detachment and skin and hair changes）, two cases of central retinal vein occlusion, one case of central retinal artery occlusion, one case of severe hypertensive retinopathy and one case of bilateral ischemic optic neuropathy with severe visual impairment. Rare as they are, such severe ophthalmological complications require a close follow-up of HCV-infected patients under IFN-α breabnent with ophthalmological monitoring if any ocular manifestation occurs.

Mutation screening of muscle development genes in patients with idiopathic clubfoot

Background: Congenital idiopathic clubfoot is a very common musculoskeletal birth defect, but with no known etiology. Dietz et al. have shown possible linkage in chromosome 3 and 13 in a large, multigenerational family with congenital idiopathic clubfoot. Current evidence suggests that muscle development is impaired in patients with congenital idiopathic club-foot, therefore we hypothesized that mutations in genes related to muscle development could be associated with this deformity. From the areas identified in the linkage study, candidate genes SPRY2, RAF1, IQSEC1, LMO7, and UCHL3 were selected based upon their presence in skeletal muscle as well as their involvement in muscle development. Methods: The exons and splice sites of the five genes were screened via sequence-based analysis in a group of 24 patients with congenital idiopathic clubfoot. All single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) found were compared to public databases to determine allelic frequency and amino acid modification. Results: While many SNPs were found, none proved to be significantly associated with the phenotype of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. The SNPs found were shown to be common amongst a non-clubfoot population and to follow the allelic frequency of the general population. Conclusions: Based upon these results, SPRY2, RAF1, IQSEC1, LMO7, and UCHL3 are not likely to be the major causes of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. Given the complexity of myogenesis, many other candidate genes remain that could cause defects in the hypaxial musculature that is invariably observed in congenital idiopathic club-foot. Clinical Relevance: This study further identifies genes which are unlikely to be the direct cause of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. It also helps to eliminate suspected genes found within the given bounds of chromosome 3 and 13.

On the reliability of predictions on Covid-19 dynamics: A systematic and critical review of modelling techniques

Since the emergence of the novel 2019 coronavirus pandemic in December 2019(COVID-19),numerous modellers have used diverse techniques to assess the dynamics of transmission of the disease,predict its future course and determine the impact of different control *** this study,we conducted a global systematic literature review to summarize trends in the modelling techniques used for Covid-19 from January 1st,2020 to November 30th,*** further examined the accuracy and precision of predictions by comparing predicted and observed values for cumulative cases and deaths as well as uncertainties of these *** an initial 4311 peer-reviewed articles and preprints found with our defined keywords,242 were fully *** studies were done on Asian(78.93%)and European(59.09%)*** of them used compartmental models(namely SIR and SEIR)(46.1%)and statistical models(growth models and time series)(31.8%)while few used artificial intelligence(6.7%),Bayesian approach(4.7%),Network models(2.3%)and Agent-based models(1.3%).For the number of cumulative cases,the ratio of the predicted over the observed values and the ratio of the amplitude of confidence interval(CI)or credibility interval(CrI)of predictions and the central value were on average larger than 1 indicating cases of inaccurate and imprecise predictions,and large variation across *** was no clear difference among models used for these two *** 75%of predictions that provided CI or CrI,observed values fall within the 95%CI or CrI of the cumulative cases *** 3.7%of the studies predicted the cumulative number of *** 70%of the predictions,the ratio of predicted over observed cumulative deaths was less or close to ***,the Bayesian model made predictions closer to reality than classical statistical models,although these differences are only suggestive due to the small number of predictions within our dataset(9 in total).In addition,we found a significant neg

AIM： To evaluate in a multicenter study whether the sonographic characterization of focal liver lesions can be improved using SonoVue-enhancement; and to compare this method with computed tomography （CT） and magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）. METHODS： One hundred and thirty four patients withone focal liver lesion detected in baseline ultrasound （US） were examined with conventional US, contrastenhanced US （n = 134）, contrast-enhanced CT （n = 115） and/or dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI （n = 70）. The lesions were classified as malignant, benign or indeterminate and the type of lesion was determined. The final diagnosis based on the combined information of all imaging examinations, clinical information and histology （n = 32） was used. Comparisons were made to see whether the addition of contrast-enhanced US led to the improvement of the characterization of doubtful focal liver lesions.RESULTS： In comparison with unenhanced US, SonoVue markedly improves sensitivity and specificity for the characterization （malignant/benign） of focal liver lesions. In comparison with CT and/or dynamic MRI, SonoVue -enhanced sonography applied for characterization of focal liver lesions was 30.2% more sensitive in the recognition of malignancy and 16.1% more specific in the exclusion of malignancy and overall 22.9% more accurate. In the subgroup with confirmative histology available （n = 30）, sensitivity was 95.5% （CEUS）, 72.2% （CT） and 81.8% （MRI）, and specificity was 75.0% （CEUS）, 37.5% （CT） and 42.9% （MRI）. The sensitivity and specificity of CEUS for the identification of focal nodular hyperplasia （FNH） and hemangiomas was 100% and 87%, resulting in an accuracy of 94.5%.CONCLUSION： SonoVue-enhanced sonography emerges as the most sensitive, ost specific and thus most accurate imaging modality for the characterization of focal liver lesions.

First characterization of endophytic Corynespora cassiicola isolates with variant cassiicolin genes recovered from rubber trees in Brazil

Corynespora cassiicola is the causal agent of Corynespora Leaf Fall(CLF)*** is one of the most important fungal diseases of rubber trees in Asia and Africa but disease outbreaks have not been reported in South ***,a small cysteine-rich glycoprotein secreted by the pathogenic *** isolate CCP,was previously identified as a potential disease effector in rubber ***,the cassiicolin-encoding gene(Cas1)was characterized and shown to be expressed in the early phase of *** this study,we investigated whether previously undetected strains of *** are present in South American rubber plantations by examining the fungal endophyte population found in asymptomatic rubber tree *** isolates were identified as *** encoding new forms of the cassiicolin precursor protein(Cas3 and Cas4)were identified from these *** of four isolates were able to induce symptoms on the cultivar they were isolated from in a detached leaf assay,with different kinetics and *** isolate had the same pathogenicity profile as the pathogenic isolate CCP;the other two isolates developed symptoms late during the course of infection,suggesting saprotrophic ***,no Cas3 or Cas4 transcripts could be detected upon inoculation with the endophytic isolates,whereas the reference gene Cas1 was expressed upon inoculation with the CCP *** work demonstrated that *** is present in South America in an endophytic form and that it may evolve from an endophytic to a saprophytic or even potentially pathogenic life style.

Folfirinox in elderly patients with pancreatic or colorectal cancer-tolerance and efficacy

AIM To study the tolerance and the efficiency of FOLFIRINOX in elderly patients diagnosed with colorectal or pancreatic *** This retrospective study included elderly patients aged over 70 years of age treated at Georges-Francois Leclerc Center by FOLFIRINOX for histological proved colorectal or pancreatic cancer between January 2009 and January 2015. Chemotheapy regimen consisted of oxaliplatin(85 mg/m2 in over 120 min) followed by leucovorin(400 mg/m2 in over 120 min), with the addition, after 30 min of irinotecan(180 mg/m2 in over 90 min) then 5 fluorouracil(5FU)(400 mg/m2 administred intravenous bolus), followed by 5FU(2400 mg/m2 intraveinous infusion over 46 h) repeated every 2 wk. Geriatric parameters were recorded at the beginning. Toxicities were evaluated with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events 4.03. Tumor response was evaluated by CT scan. Treatment continued until disease progression, unacceptable toxicities or patient *** Fifty-two patients aged from 70 to 87 years were treated by FOLFIRINOX, 34 had colorectal cancer and 18 had pancreatic cancer. Most of them were in good general condition, 82.7% had a 0-1 performance status and 61.5% had a Charlson Comorbidity Index valuated by RECIST criteria showed a controlled disease for 25 patients(48.1%), a stable disease for 13 and a partial response for 12 patients.
