Effectiveness of Mindfulness Training in Enhancing Executive Function and Decreasing Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness training in enhancing executive function and decreasing symptoms of depression and anxiety in multiple sclerosis patients. The population in this study consisted of people with MS who referred to Karaj city MS society in 1394. These people didn’t experience medicinal changes during the study period and their expanded disability status score (EDSS) was between 0 and 5.5. 40 of them were randomly selected and placed into two experimental and control groups (20 for the experimental and the other for the control group). The treatment of mindfulness training was held in 8 sessions of group training, once a week and for 2 hours. The statistical method of multivariate analysis of covariance was used. The measurement tools were the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). After all, the results in both groups were compared and evaluated by the use of analysis of covariance. The results showed significant differences in symptoms of anxiety and depression between the two groups (p 0.05). Generally, the results of this research showed positive effects of mindfulness training on reducing anxiety and depression among patients with MS and ineffectiveness of mindfulness training on their executive function. Therefore, considering that there is no certain treatment for MS plus results of this study, the application of mindfulness training can be quite useful to reduce levels of anxiety and depression in patients with MS.

Develop and Validate a Metacognitive-Cognitive-Behavioral Model for Body Dysmorphic Disorder

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a metacognitive-cognitive-behavioral model for body dysmorphic disorder. A sample of 800 participants (400 males and 400 females) was selected randomly and questionnaires were administered to them. Structure analysis was used to test the factor structure validity of the metacognitive-cognitive-behavioral model for body dysmorphic disorder. Results of the structure analysis revealed and supported a metacognitive-cognitive-behavioral model for body dysmorphic disorder. Also, the results showed that the model had the best fit to the data and was closely related to the theoretical assumptions. The model presented in this study illustrates a multidimensional approach that the model focuses on the metacognitive-cognitive-behavioral dimensions;hence, the model presented in this study is a new explanatory model. The model may prompt future research into body dysmorphic disorder and facilitate clinical treatment and case formulation.

Body Image and Meta-Worry as Mediators of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Objectives: Meta-worry and attitudes towards the body have been largely overlooked as potential risk factors for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) despite theorizing that a negative body image may play a critical role in the development of this disorder. Participants: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fit of a theoretical model specifying body image and meta-worry as mediators between cognitive, metacognitive beliefs and body dysmorphic disorder(BDD) in a nonclinical sample of 635 participants (304 male and 331 female). Results: The data supported the model, and meta-worry and body image significantly mediated the relationship between cognitive, metacognitive beliefs and BDD. These findings provide essential preliminary evidence that body image may represent a necessary but not sufficient risk factor for BDD and that treatment for BDD should consider targeting body-related pathology in addition to meta-worry. Conclusion: The model may prompt future research into body dysmorphic disorder.

Iranian Medical Staff’s Perception of the <i>All Saints</i>TV S

The present study was an attempt to explore the Iranian medical staff’s perception of the All Saints TV series. 199 participants including doctors, nurses, interns, and paramedics took part in this survey study which was done in 2011. A 17-item Likert scale questionnaire was developed by the team of researchers to gather further evidence on the issues raised by the participants in the focus group which was formed in order to delve into their thoughts, attitudes, and feelings about the mentioned program. The supportive and non-blaming nature of the working relationship among the treatment team, their respect for the patients, their strong team work, the accuracy and precision of the presented medical information, and the discipline and sense of responsibility on the part of the medical staff were among the most frequent issues being mentioned and noticed by the participants. In addition, the majority of the participants considered the demonstrated model for providing healthcare services to be an efficient one;however, they believed that it was not possible to apply that model in the Iranian hospitals mainly due to the cultural differences between the two contexts and the current regulations in Iran. The participants were also observed to be only moderately satisfied with the system they were working in. It seems that healthcare systems in the developed countries can be used as models to identify the problems with the existing healthcare system in Iran. Authorities need to take appropriate measures to resolve such problems. The possible solutions and actions have been suggested in the present article.

Development and Validation of a Measure for Metacognitive Factors in Body Dysmorphic Disorder Patients

Background and Objectives: Recent studies explored the relationships between metacognitive beliefs and body dysmorphic disorder. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate one self-report scale of metacognitive factor about body dysmorphic. Methods: Development of this scale involved three steps: 1) items generated from a qualitative study with lecture and care professionals, 2) expert panel review, and 3) pilot test. A factor analysis of the responses from 600 participants suggested the creation of a 25-item scale. Results: Study showed that scores on the 25-item measure correlated with five theoretically related constructs, including positive and negative metacognitive beliefs about body dysmorphic, thought-fusion and metacognitive control strategies. Developing and Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Behavioral-Cognitive-Metacognitive Intervention on the Severity of Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder’s Symptoms

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a disorder which is resistant to the existing treatments and to compensate this defect, it is necessary to design and search for the new treatments. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the behavioral-cognitive-metacognitive intervention on the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. In order to achieve objectives of the study, after developing the behavioral-cognitive-metacognitive intervention, it was evaluated in a single-subject procedure. OCI-R scores at baseline were obtained by following the treatment on 3 individuals. The study was a single-subject research and the data were analyzed by drawing the graph. Graph drawing results showed that the behavioral-cognitive-metacognitive intervention reduced the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and reduction of OCD symptoms was also clinically significant. As the intervention of the present study is multi-dimensional and takes into account all the three behavioral, cognitive and metacognitive aspects and considers them interdependent and not apart or contradictory, it is considered as a new intervention.

Validation of a Classification System for Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Based on DSM-5

The purpose of this study was to examine whether a broad?obsessive-compulsive and related disorders model, which consisted of obsessive-compulsive, hoarding disorder, body dysmorphic, trichotillomania and pathological skin picking, displayed sufficient data fit. On the other hand, we examined whether a reduced obsessive-compulsive and related disorders symptoms model consisting of above mentioned disorders demonstrated superior fit or not. To test the factor structure validity of the classification system of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, we used Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA). Result of factor structure analysis revealed and supported an OCSD symptoms dimension that included obsessive-compulsive, hoarding disorder, body dysmorphic, trichotillomania, and pathological skin picking symptoms. Also, results of this study supported?the DSM-5 changes.
