Cellulose, the most abundant organic polymer on Earth, is a sustainable source of carbon to use as a negative electrode for sodium ion batteries. Here, hard carbons(HC) prepared by cellulose pyrolysis were investigated with varying pyrolysis temperature from 700 °C to 1600 °C. Characterisation methods such as Small Angle X-ray Scattering(SAXS) measurements and N2adsorption were performed to analyse porosity differences between the samples. The graphene sheet arrangements were observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM): an ordering of the graphene sheets is observed at temperatures above 1150 °C and small crystalline domains appear over 1400 °C. As the graphene sheets start to align, the BET surface area decreases and the micropore size increases. To correlate hard carbon structures and electrochemical performances, different tests in Na//HC cells with 1 M NaPF6ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate(EC/DMC) were performed. Samples pyrolysed from 1300 °C to 1600 °C showed a 300 m Ah/g reversible capacity at C/10 rate(where C = 372 mA/g) with an excellent stability in cycling and a very good initial Coulombic efficiency of up to 84%. Furthermore, hard carbons showed an excellent rate capability where sodium extraction rate varies from C/10 to 5C. At 5C more than 80% of reversible capacity remains stable for hard carbons synthesized from 1000 °C to 1600 °C.

Obesity is one of the diseases with severe health consequences and rapidly increasing worldwide prevalence.Understanding the complex network of food intake and energy balance regulation is an essential prerequisite for pharmacological intervention with obesity.G protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs)are among the main modulators of metabolism and energy balance.They,for instance,regulate appetite and satiety in certain hypothalamic neurons,as well as glucose and lipid metabolism and hormone secretion from adipocytes.Mutations in some GPCRs,such as the melanocortin receptor type 4(MC4R),have been associated with early-onset obesity.Here,we identified the adhesion GPCR latrophilin 1(ADGRL1/LPHN1)as a member of the regulating network governing food intake and the maintenance of energy balance.Deficiency of the highly conserved receptor in mice results in increased food consumption and severe obesity,accompanied by dysregulation of glucose homeostasis.Consistently,we identified a partially inactivating mutation in human ADGRL1/LPHN1 in a patient suffering from obesity.Therefore,we propose that LPHN1 dysfunction is a risk factor for obesity development.

BACKGROUND Rhabdomyolysis is a life-threatening condition,often leading to progressive renal failure and death.It is caused by destruction of skeletal muscle and the release of myoglobin and other intracellular contents into the circulation.The most frequent cause of this condition is“crush syndrome”,although several others have been described and paraneoplastic inflammatory myopathies associated with various types of cancer are repeatedly reported.CASE SUMMARY We describe a rare case of a patient with pancreatic cancer who developed rhabdomyolysis early on,possibly due to paraneoplastic myositis leading to acute renal failure and eventually to rapid death.A 78-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to our hospital for obstructive jaundice and weight loss due to a lesion in the pancreatic head.She presented increasingly severe renal insufficiency with anuria,a dramatic increase in creatine phosphokinase(36000 U/L,n.v.20-180 U/L)and myoglobin(>120000μg/L,n.v.12-70μg/L).On clinical examination,the patient showed increasing pain in the lower limbs associated with muscle weakness which was severe enough to immobilize her.Paraneoplastic myopathy linked to the malignant lesion of the pancreatic head was suspected.The patient was treated with hemodialysis and intravenous methylprednisolone.Despite all the efforts to prepare the patient for surgery,her general condition rapidly deteriorated and she eventually died 30 d after hospital admission.CONCLUSION The possible causes of rhabdomyolysis in this patient with pancreatic cancer are discussed,the development of paraneoplastic myopathy being the most likely.Clinicians should bear in mind that these syndromes may become clinically manifest at any stage of the cancer course and their early diagnosis and treatment could improve the patient’s prognosis.

N-Hydroxypipecolic acid(NHP)is a signaling molecule crucial for systemic acquired resistance(SAR),a systemic immune response in plants that provides long-lasting and broad-spectrum protection against secondary pathogen infections.To identify negative regulators of NHP biosynthesis,we performed a forward genetic screen to search for mutants with elevated expression of the NHP biosynthesis gene FLAvIN-DEPENDENT MONOOXYGENASE 1(FMO1).Analysis of two constitutive expression of FMO1(cef)and one induced expression of FMO1(ief)mutants revealed that the AIPP3–PHD2–CPL2 protein complex,which is involved in the recognition of the histone modification H3K27me3 and transcriptional repression,contributes to the negative regulation of FMO1 expression and NHP biosynthesis.Our study suggests that epigenetic regulation plays a crucial role in controlling FMO1 expression and NHP levels in plants.

The European Commission's Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection(COM(2012)46)identified soil erosion as an important threat to European Union's(EU)soil resources.Gully erosion is an important but hitherto poorly understood component of this threat.Here we present the results of an unprecedented attempt to monitor the occurrence of gully erosion across the EU and UK.We integrate a soil erosion module into the 2018 LUCAS Topsoil Survey,which was conducted to monitor the soil health status across the EU and to support actions to prevent soil degradation.We discuss and explore opportunities to further improve this method.The 2018 LUCAS Topsoil Survey consisted of soil sampling(0-20 cm depth)and erosion observations conducted in ca.10%(n=24,759)of the 238,077 Land Use/Cover Area frame Survey(LUCAS)2018 in-field survey sites.Gully erosion channels were detected for ca.1%(211 sites)of the visited LUCAS Topsoil sites.Commission(false positives,2.5%)and omission errors(false negatives,5.6%)were found to be low and at a level that could not compromise the representativeness of the gully erosion survey.Overall,the findings indicate that the tested 2018 LUCAS Topsoil in-field gully erosion monitoring system is effective for detecting the incidence of gully erosion.The morphogenesis of the mapped gullies suggests that the approach is an effective tool to map permanent gullies,whereas it appears less effective to detect short-lived forms like ephemeral gullies.Spatial patterns emerging from the LUCAS Topsoil field observations provide new insights on typical gully formation sites across the EU and UK.This can help to design further targeted research activities.An extension of this approach to all LUCAS sites of 2022 would significantly enhance our understanding of the geographical distribution of gully erosion processes across the EU.Repeated every three years,LUCAS soil erosion surveys would contribute to assess the state of gully erosion in the EU over time.It will also enable monitoring and eventually predicting the dynamics

The social parasitic beetle Puussus favieri(Coleoptera,Carabidae,Paussini)performs different types of stridulations,which sclectively mimic those emitted by dif-ferent ant castes of its host Pheidole pallidula(Hymenoptera,Formicidae,Myrmicinae).However,the significance of this acoustical mimicry for the success of the parasitic strat-egy and the behaviors elicited in the host ants by stridulations was unknown.We reared Paussus favieri in Pheidole pallidula colonies and filmed their interacting behaviors.We analyzed in slow motion the behavior of ants near a stridulating beetle.We analyzed sep-arately trains of pulse(Pa+Pb,produced by repeated rubbings)and single pulse(Pc,produced by a single rubbing)of stridulations,clearly recognizable from the shaking up and down of the beetle hind legs.and associated them with differcent ant responscs.The full repertoire of sounds produced by P:favieri elicited benevolent responses both in workers and soldiers.We found that different signals elicit different(sometimes multiplc)bchaviors in ants,with different frequency in the two ant castes.However,Pc(alone or in conjunction with other types of pulses)appears to be the type of acoustic signal mostly responsible for all recorded behaviors.These results indicate that the acoustic channel plays a pivotal role in the host-parasite interaction.Finding that a parasite uses the acoustical channel so intensively,and in such a complicated way to trigger ant bchaviors,indicates that acoustic signals may be more important in ant societies than commonly recognized.

Background： Circulating tumor cells （CTCs） are often undetected through the immunomagnetic epithelial cell adhesion molecule （EpCAM）-based CellSearch~ System in breast and colorectal cancer （CRC） patients treated with bevacizumab （BEv）, where low CTC numbers have been reported even in patients with evidence of progression of disease. To date, the reasons for this discrepancy have not been clarified. This study was carried out to investigate the molecular and phenotypic changes in CRC cells after chronic exposure to BEv in vitro. Methods： The human CRC cell line WiDr was exposed to a clinically relevant dose of BEv for 3 months in vitro. The expression of epithelial and mesenchymal markers and EpCAM isoforms was determined by western blotting and immunofluorescence. To evaluate the impact of EpCAM variant isoforms expression on CTC enumeration by CellSearch, untreated and treated colon cancer cells were spiked into 7.5 mL of blood from a healthy donor and enumerated by CellSearch. Results： Chronic exposure of CRC cell line to BEv induced decreased expression of EpCAM 40 kDa isoform and increased expression EpCAM 42 kDa isoform, together with a decreased expression of cytokeratins （CK）, while no evidence of epithelial to mesenchymal transition （EMT） in treated cells was observed. The recovery rate of cells through CellSearch was gradually reduced in course of treatment with BEv, being 84% , 70% and 40% at l, 2 and 3 months, respectively. Conclusions： We hypothesize that BEv may prevent CellSearch from capturing CTCs through altering EpCAM isoforms.

The sword lily Gladiolus palustris Gaudin is protected on European level and listed in Annexes II and Iv of the EC Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC.It grows in nutrient-poor,calcareous meadows in central and eastern Europe.Tree encroachment in montane meadows of the European Alps as a result of recent land use changes and the abandonment of traditional farming practices threaten the survival of this species.Conservation-driven mowing is considered a feasible conservation measure for maintaining high species diversity in abandoned semi-natural grasslands.To assess the effects of tenyears of biennial mowing on a grassland community in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park,Italy(Site of Community Importance,Natura 2000 network),ten25 m2 plots were established whereby four plots were placed in the mowed area,four in the non-mowed area and two in a small non-mowed patch of grassland inside the mowed area.In each plot the following variables were recorded,total percentage of plant cover,percentage cover of woody species,percentage cover of herbaceous species,percentage cover and number of flowering ramets of G.palustris and a complete list of species and their percentage abundance.Mowed plots showed a higher species richness than non-mowed plots.The number of G.palustris flowering ramets and percentage cover increased manifold in mowed plots compared to nonmowed plots.The resumption of mowing forconservation purposes undertaken by the managing authority halted the process of tree encroachment and avoided a drastic change in plant composition.Periodic mowing(every second or third year)was demonstrated to be a cost-effective conservation measure in non-productive grasslands to keep grasses at bay in favour of forbs of high conversation value.

vespa velutina is an invasive hornet species that is colonising Europe,generating considerable impacts on honeybees,beekeeping and biodiversity.Control and early warning strategies for this species are mainly based on monitoring plans and procedures of nest detection and destruction.Technological tools(harmonic radar,radio-telemetry)have been developed to increase the probabilities of nest detection in new outbreaks.Since hornets are able to regulate nest temperature,thermography may represent an additional technique that may be used,both alone or in support to other techniques.In this study,the viability of thermal imaging in detecting nests of v.velutina was evaluated in controlled conditions.The influence of different environmental and operative variables(time of the day,presence/absence of leaves covering the nest,distance between the nest and the operator)were tested on three nests detected during August 2018 in Italy.All the nests were detectable by thermal imaging,but environmental and operative variables affect their detectability.The temperature difference between the nests and the surrounding reaches its maximum before sunrise and without a tree canopy covering the nests.Although nests were visible in some cases from 30 m,the detectability was higher at shorter distances,even if this variable may also depend on infrared camera resolution.An increase in the environmental temperature also generates a decrease of nest detectability.Although some limitations could occur,these results show the applicability of thermography in detecting v velutina nests before the beginning of the reproductive phase,and consequently its potentiality in control strategies.

Dear Editor,Tumor microenvironment(TME)-dependent stromal cell plasticity governs tumor development and therapy response.Tumor endothelial cells(TECs)are a major cellular component in this context[1].In colorectal carcinoma(CRC),the stromal cell-dependent impact of the TME is illustrated by an improved survival depending on an interferon(IFN)-γ-dominated Th1-like TME associated with high T-cell density[2]and suppressed angiogenesis[3,4].Cellular transcriptional memory is reported in cell lines after repeated exposure to IFN-γin vitro[5],suggesting that a Th1-like TME may also exert stable imprinting effects in vivo.Here,we investigated whether TME-dependent transcriptional imprinting in TECs from CRC patients can be exploited to retrieve clinically relevant signatures predicting outcomes.
