The effects of parameters, in the process of plasma-sprayed ceramic coating, upon the deposition efficiency of alumina-13 wt.% titania composite coatings are reported. The coatings were prepared by the atmospheric plasma spray process. The plasma torch input power, flow rates of primary, secondary and carrier gas, powder feed rate and spraying distance were considered as variables. The results show that the variations in all the selected spraying parameters strongly affect the deposition efficiency. The micro-hardness, as well as erosive and sliding wear rates of the coating are also affected by these parameters. Especially the input power strongly affects the phase and microstructure of the coatings.

The arc plasma melting technique is a simple method to synthesize high temperature reaction composites. In this study, mullite-zirconia composite was synthesized by transferred and non-transferred arc plasma melting, and the results were compared. A mixture of alumina and zircon powders with a mole ratio of 3 ： 2 were ball milled for four hours and melted for two minutes in the transferred and non-transferred mode of plasma arcs. Argon and air were used as plasma forming gases. The phase and microstruetural formation of melted samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction （XRD） and scanning electron microscope （SEM）. The microstructure of the composites was found to be affected by the mode of melting. In transferred arc melting, zirconia flowers with uniform lines along with mullite whiskers were obtained. In the ease of non-transferred are plasma melting, mullite whiskers along with star shape zirconia were formed. Differential thermal analysis （DTA） of the synthesized mullite-zirconia composites provided a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of mullite formation during the two different processes.

Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide powder was synthesized by in-flight oxidation of titanium dihydride （TiH2） powder in a thermal plasma jet. TiH2 powder was injected into the thermal plasma jet and allowed to react with oxygen injected downstream the jet. Characteriza- tion of the powder by various analytical tools indicated that the powder consisted of nano-sized titanium dioxide particles consisting predominantly of the anatase phase. It is suggested that the thermo-chemistry of the oxidation process contributes significantly to the formation of nano-sized titania. The large energy released during the oxidation process dissociates the TiO2 particles into TiO（g） and titanium vapour, which recombine downstream with oxygen and form nano particles of TiO2.

An organic material, namely, ethyl p-dimethylamino benzoate was crystallized for the first time by solution growth technique using pure and mixed solvents. Growth kinetics and morphology changes with solvents were investigated based on solute –solvent interactions of pure and mixed solvents. An appropriate mixed solvent for high quality crystals with well-defined morphology is reported. The absence of solvent molecules and the presence of various functional groups of the grown sample were qualitatively confirmed by FTIR spectroscopic studies. Thermal properties of the grown sample were analyzed by TG and DTA analysis. Mechanical properties of the EDMAB crystal were investigated by micro hardness studies. Moreover, the grown crystal shows high transparency in the visible and near IR regions. The material shows relatively high SHG efficiency than that of KDP.

A new organic single crystal of β-Alanine Oxalate (BAO) has been grown from solution by slow evaporation technique. Transparent, colourless crystals of size upto 11 × 9 × 4 mm3 were obtained. Formation of the new crystal has been confirmed by single crystal XRD and FTIR spectra. The grown crystals have been subjected to powder X-ray diffraction studies to identify the crystalline nature. Single crystal X-ray diffractometer was utilized to measure unit cell parameters and to confirm the crystal structure. BAO belongs to monoclinic system with lattice parameters a = 22.335 ?, b = 5.697 ?, c = 13.993 ?, α = 90?, β = 115.37?, γ = 90?, and volume of the unit cell, v = 1609 ?3. The functional groups are confirmed by FTIR vibrational analysis. Optical transmission spectra revealed the optical properties of the grown crystal. Transmission spectrum reveals that the crystal has low Uv cut-off of 205 nm and has a good transmittance in the entire visible region enabling its use in optical applications. There is no absorption in the entire visible region. Mechanical strength of the grown material is tested by hardness studies. The value of hardness increases when the applied load is increased.
