Treatment of spent wash water derived from shredded lettuce processing using a combination of electrocoagulation and germicidal ultraviolet light

Objective:Water recycling is a significant part of an overall water management *** current study evaluated electrocoagulation,used in combination with ultraviolet light(at 254 nm),to reduce the organic content and enhance the microbiological quality,of wash water derived from shredded lettuce ***:The composition of spent wash water derived from a commercial lettuce processing operation was used to prepare a simulated solution to be applied to validate the water recycling *** simulated spent wash water was subjected to an electrocoagulation process followed by filtration and a tertiary ultraviolet(254 nm)*** efficacy of the recycling treatment to decrease turbidity(nephelometric turbidity units,biological oxygen demand(BOD),chemical oxygen demand(COD)and decrease in introduced bacterial ***:Spent wash water sampled from a commercial processing line was found to be colloidal in nature(78±26 NTU)with low total solids content(544±87 mg/L),BOD(230±53 mg/L)and COD(309±53 mg/L).An electrocogaultion process performed for 10 min using 3.48 A/m2 current density at pH 6.5 and conductivity of>100μS/cm supported an 87%removal of turbidity,38%reduction in BOD along with 49%decrease in *** electrocoagulation process was also found to reduce the levels of Escherichia coli,Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes by 1-2 log *** tertiary Uv treatment of water derived from the electro coagulation process,supported further reduction in model pathogens,although it was noted that the D values for inactivation were in the order of 1.01-1.60 mJ/cm^(2),which compares to 0.22-0.31 mJ/cm^(2) in *** apparent increase in bacterial resistance to ultraviolet was likely due to the Uv absorbing low molecular weight constituents within wash water that provided protection against ***:In conclusion,the study demonstrated the feasibility of applying electrocoagulation and Uv to rapidly treat spent lettuce wash water to fa

Objective:To determine the genetic diversity of Plasmodium(P.)knowlesi isolates from Sabah,Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia,targeting the S-type SSU rRNA gene and including aspects of natural selection and ***:Thirty-nine blood samples infected with *** were collected in Sabah,Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular *** S-type SSU rRNA gene was amplified using polymerase chain reaction,cloned into a vector,and *** natural selection and haplotype of the S-type SSU rRNA gene sequences were determined using DnaSP v6 and illustrated using NETWORK *** study's 39 S-type SSU rRNA sequences and eight sequences from the Genbank database were subjected to phylogenetic analysis using MEGA ***:Overall,the phylogenetic analysis showed no evidence of a geographical cluster of *** isolates from different areas in Malaysia based on the S-type SSU rRNA gene *** S-type SSU rRNA gene sequences were relatively conserved and with a purifying *** sharing of the S-type SSU rRNA gene was observed between the *** isolates in Sabah,Malaysian Borneo,but not between Sabah,Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular ***:This study suggests that the S-type SSU rRNA gene of *** isolates in Sabah,Malaysian Borneo,and Peninsular Malaysia has fewer polymorphic sites,representing the conservation of the *** features make the S-type SSU rRNA gene suitable for comparative studies,such as determining the evolutionary relationships and common ancestry among *** species.

Cubic Mn_(2)Ru_(x)Ga Heusler compound is a typical example of compensated ferrimagnet with attractive potential for high-density,ultrafast,and low-power spintronic *** the form of epitaxial thin films,Mn_(2)Ru_(x)Ga exhibits high spin polarization and high tunability of compensation temperature by freely changing the Ru content x in a broad range(0.3vercome this limitation,Mn-Ru-Ga is alloyed with a fourth element *** adjusting the content of v in the By adjusting the content of v in the Mn_(2)Ru_(0.75)v_(y)Ga and Mn_(2.25-y)Ru_(0.75)v_(y)Ga quaternary systems the magnetic compensation temperature is *** is achieved near 300 K which is confirmed by both the magnetic measurement and anomalous Hall effect *** analyses of the anomalous Hall effect scaling in quaternary Mn-Ru-v-Ga alloy reveal the dominant role of skew scattering,notably that contributed caused by the thermally excited phonons,in contrast to the dominant intrinsic mechanism found in many other 3d ferromagnets and Heusler *** is further shown that the Ga antisites and v content can simultaneously control the residual resistivity ratio(RRR)as well as the relative contribution of phonon and defect to the anomalous Hall effect a"/a0'in Mn-Ru-v-Ga,resulting in a scaling relation a"/a0'∝RRR^(1.8).

A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATCC *** production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase vrcA and the cytochrome P450 ***,the replacement of vrcB with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic *** study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

The earth-abundant and high-performance catalysts are crucial for commercial implementation of hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Herein,a multifunctional site strategy to construct excellent HER catalysts by incorporating iridium(Ir)ions on the atomic scale into orthorhombic-CoSe2(Ir-CoSe_(2))was *** hydrogen evolution activity in alkaline media such as a low overpotential of 48.7 mv at a current density of 10 mA cm^(-2)and better performance than commercial Pt/C catalysts at high current densities were found in the Ir-CoSe_(2) *** the experiments and theoretical calculations,it was revealed that Ir enabled CoSe_(2)to form multifunctional sites to synergistically catalyze alkaline HER by promoting the adsorption and dissociation of H_(2)O(Ir sites)and optimizing the binding energy for H^(*)on Co *** was noticeable that the electrolytic system comprising the Ir-CoSe_(2)electrode not only produced hydrogen efficiently via HER,but also degraded organic pollutants(Methylene blue).The cell voltage of the dual-function electrolytic system was 1.58 v at the benchmark current density of 50 mA cm^(-2),which was significantly lower than the conventional water splitting *** was indicated that this method was a novel strategy for designing advanced HER electrocatalysts by constructing multifunctional catalytic sites for hydrogen production and organic degradation.

Structural, mechanical and corrosion properties of CNT-304 stainless steel nanocomposites

In this work, a systematic investigation was performed on the structural, mechanical and corrosion properties of CNT incorporated 304 stainless steel. various concentrations of CNT from 0.5 to 4 wt% were incorporated into the 304 stainless steel matrix to investigate the feasibility of fabrication and enhancement of strength and other material properties. The fabrication of CNT-steel composite was achieved through a spark plasma sintering process at a sintering temperature of 800℃. Raman and morphological studies confirmed that the CNT structure was retained in the sintered pellets. Optimum performance was found at 0.5 wt% CNT giving a vickers hardness of 351 Hv and compressive yield strength of 404 MPa which were 5.5 and 2.0 times, respectively, those of pristine steel. Corrosion studies with 3.5 wt% Na Cl solution revealed a slight increase in the corrosion rate for CNT dispersed samples.

Improved breakdown voltage of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs grown on Si substrates using partially Mg-doped GaN buffer layer by MOCvD

AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors(HEMTs) were grown on Si substrates by *** the HEMT structure,a 1 μm GaN buffer layer was partially doped with Mg in an attempt to increase the resistivity and minimize the buffer *** AlGaN/GaN HEMTs grown on undoped and partially Mg-doped GaN buffer layers were processed and the DC characteristics of the devices were characterized for comparing the effect of Mg *** the device with the partially Mg-doped GaN buffer layer,a lower drain leakage current density of 55.8 nA/mm,a lower gate leakage current density of 2.73 μA/mm,and a higher off-state breakdown voltage of 104 v were achieved with device dimensions Lg/Wg/Lgs/Lgd=1/10/1/1 μm,better than the device with the undoped GaN buffer layer,which has a higher drain leakage current density of 9.2 μA/mm,a higher gate leakage current density of 91.8 μA/mm,and a lower off-state breakdown voltage of 87 v with the same device dimensions.

Early control of short hepatic portal veins in isolated or combined hepatic caudate lobectomy

BACKGROUND:Caudate lobectomy has long been considered technically *** study aimed to elaborate the significance of early control of short hepatic portal veins(SHPvs) in isolated hepatic caudate lobectomy or in hepatic caudate lobectomy combined with major partial hepatectomy,and to describe the anatomical characteristics of ***:The data of 117 patients who underwent either isolated or combined caudate lobectomy by the same team of surgeons from 2005 to 2009 were retrospectively *** 2005 to 2007(group A,n=55),we carried out early control of short hepatic veins(SHvs) only;from 2008 to 2009(group B,n=62),we carried out early control of both SHvs and *** two groups were compared to evaluate which surgical procedure was better.A detailed anatomical study was then carried out on the last 25 consecutive patients in group B to study the number and distribution of SHPvs during ***:Patients in group B had less intra-operative blood loss,less impairment of liver function,shorter postoperative hospital stay,fewer postoperative complications and required less blood transfusion(Pvs in the 25 patients was 183,with 7.3±2.7 per *** diameters of SHPvs were 1 to 4 *** average,3.4 SHPvs/patient came from the left portal vein,2.2 from the bifurcation,1.4 from the right portal vein,and 0.3 from the main portal *** average,3.3 SHPvs/patient supplied segment I of the liver,0.4 for segment II,2.1 for segment Iv,1.4 for segment v and 0.1 for segment ***:Early control of SHPvs in isolated or combined hepatic caudate lobectomy may be a useful method to decrease surgical risk and improve postoperative recovery.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of Beauveria bassiana(Bb 1205)on controlling Fusarium oxysporum ***(Fol 17108)in tomato plants in greenhouse *** of Bb 1205 was the most promising among the agronomic variables and expression of the activity of the enzymesβ-1,3-glucanases and *** of Bb 1205 occurred at a concentration of 1×108 conidia·mL−1,which was administered onto the leaves,directly into the soil and via *** with Fol 17108 occurred with 1×106 spores·mL−1,which were added directly to the *** was used for measuring agronomic parameters,namely activity of chitinases andβ-1,3-glucanases in foliage and *** Bb 1205 was added to the soil,the chlorophyll index and aerial part length showed significant *** addition,it was determined that root length,fresh weight of foliage,flower,and fruit count increased 82 days after inoculation(dai).Chitinase activity induced by Bb 1205 in leaves and roots of tomato plants infected with Fol 17108 was observed when injected into the stem at 32 dai(41.8 and 11.6-fold,respectively).Inoculation on the foliage showed a 10-fold increase ofβ-1,3-glucanases in the roots after 82 *** for leaves,a 3.8-fold increase was found when the stem was *** the different in vivo applications,Bb 1205 activated its defenses by expressing the chitinase enzymes andβ-1,3-glucanase,thus reducing the damage caused by Fol 17108,demonstrating increase plant growth thereafter.
