complex regional pain syndrome(cRPS) is a disorder characterized by an intractable, disabling pain of the affected limb. It is triggered by various injuries and is often resistant to standard therapy. We report a young soldier with cRPS of the right hand sustained from an electrical injury, who had improvement in resting pain with Zoledronic acid. In this report, we discuss the therapeutic options and the role of bisphosphonates in cRPS.

Thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of AI86Gd6TM8 （TM = cu, Ni, co, Fe, Mn, cr, Ti, Zr, Mo, Ta） glass-forming alloys in the temperature range of 300-880 K were determined by laser flash method. The temperatures of endothermic and exothermic reactions of the alloys were determined by differential scanning calorimetry method. The alloys were prepared by conventional arc-melting technique under helium atmosphere. All the alloys studied exhibit strong supercooling of the liquidus temperatures up to 80 K, which indicates their good glass-forming ability. The specific heat capacity of the alloys achieves the Dulong-Petit＇s value in the temperature range of 350-550 K except Als6crsGd6 and Als6ZrsGd6 compositions. The values of both thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of the alloy studied are significantly lower than those for pure aluminum. It is found that embedding 14% （mole fraction） of transition elements （Gd＋TM） in the aluminum matrix leads to significant decrease in the absolute magnitudes of both thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity in crystalline state. The thermal conductivity of glass-forming Als6Gd6TMs alloys is strongly affected by directed chemical bonding between alloy components.

Neglected for years, astrocytes are now recognized to fulfill and support many, if not all, homeostatic functionsof the healthy central nervous system(cNS). During neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) and spinal cord injury(ScI), astrocytes in the vicinity of degenerating areas undergo both morphological and functional changes that might compromise their intrinsic properties. Evidence from human and animal studies show that deficient astrocyte functions or loss-of-astrocytes largely contribute to increased susceptibility to cell death for neurons, oligodendrocytes and axons during ALS and ScI disease progression. Despite exciting advances in experimental cNS repair, most of current approaches that are translated into clinical trials focus on the replacement or support of spinal neurons through stem cell transplantation, while none focus on the specific replacement of astroglial populations. Knowing the important functions carried out by astrocytes in the cNS, astrocyte replacement-based therapies might be a promising approach to alleviate overall astrocyte dysfunction, deliver neurotrophic support to degenerating spinal tissue and stimulate endogenous cNS repair abilities. Enclosed in this review, we gathered experimental evidence that argue in favor of astrocyte transplantation during ALS and ScI. Based on their intrinsic properties and according to the cell type transplanted, astrocyte precursors or stem cell-derived astrocytes promote axonal growth, support mechanisms and cells involved in myelination, are able to modulate the host immune response, deliver neurotrophic factors and provide protective molecules against oxidative or excitotoxic insults, amongst many possible benefits. Embryonic or adult stem cells can even be genetically engineered in order to deliver missing gene products and therefore maximize the chance of neuroprotection and functional recovery. AIM： To evaluate the efficacy of postoperative serial assay of carcinoembryonic antigen （cEA） and cytokeratins for the detection of recurrent disease in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma after radical surgery. METHODS： Between 1993 and 2000, 120 patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma underwent radical surgery in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Federal University of Sao Paulo-Escola Paulista de Medicina, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Periodic postoperative evaluation was performed by assaying markers in peripheral serum, colonoscopy and imaging examination. Presence of cEA was detected using the Delfia^R method with 5 μg/L threshold, and cytokeratins using the LIA-mat TPA-M Prolifigen^R method with 72 U/L threshold. RESULTS： In the first postoperative year, patients without recurrent disease had normal levels of cEA （1.5 ＋ 0.9μg/L） and monoclonal tissue polypeptide antigen-M （TPA-M, 64.4 ± 47.8 U/L）, while patients with recurrences had high levels of cEA （6.9± 9.8 ;μg/L, P 〈 0.01） and TPA-M （192.2 ±328.8 U/L, P 〈 0.05）. During the second postoperative year, patients without tumor recurrence had normal levels of cEA （2.0 ± 1.8μg/L） and TPA-M （50.8±38.4 U/L）, while patients with recurrence had high levels of cEA （66.3 ±130.8 μg/L, P 〈 0.01） and TPA-M （442.7 ± 652.8 U/L, P 〈 0.05）. The mean follow-up time was 22.3 mo. There was recurrence in 23 cases. Five reoperations were performed without achieving radical excision. Rises in tumor marker levels preceded identification of recurrences： cEA in seven （30%） and TPA-M in eleven individuals （48%）. cONcLUSION： Intensive follow-up by serial assay of cEA and cytokeratins allows early detection of colorectal neoplasm recurrence.

colonic duplication in adults: Report of two cases presenting with rectal bleeding

Gastrointestinal duplication is an uncommon congenital abnormality in two-thirds of cases manifesting before the age of 2 years. Ileal duplication is common while colonic duplication, either cystic or tubular, is a rather unusual clinical entity that remains asymptomatic and undiagnosed in most cases. Mostly occurring in pediatric patients,colonic duplication is encountered in adults only in a few cases. This study reports two cases of colonic duplication in adults. Both cases presented with rectal bleeding on admission. The study was focused on clinical, imaging,histological, and therapeutical aspects of the presenting cases. Gastrografin enema established the diagnosis in both cases. The cystic structure and the adjacent part of the colon were excised en-block. The study implies that colonic duplication, though uncommon, should be included in the differential diagnosis of rectal bleeding.

When the shoot apical meristem of plants is damaged or removed,fecundity and/or plant growth may suffer(under-compensation),remain unaffected(compensation)or increase(overcompensation).The latter signifies a potential‘cost’of apical *** natural populations of 19 herbaceous angiosperm species with a conspicuously vertical,apically dominant growth form,we removed(clipped)the shoot apical meristem for replicate plants early in the growing season to test for a potential cost of apical *** and unclipped(control)plants had their near neighbours removed,and were harvested after flowering production had finished but before seed *** mass was measured separately for aboveground body size(shoots),leaves,seeds and fruits;and number of leaves,fruits and seeds per plant were *** predicted that:(i)our study species(because of their strong apically dominant growth form)would respond to shoot apical meristem removal with greater branching intensity,and thus overcompensation in terms of fecundity and/or biomass;and(ii)overcompensation is particularly enabled for species that produce smaller but more leaves,and hence with a larger bud bank of axillary meristems available for deployment in branching and/or fruit *** variable compensatory capacities were recorded,and with no significant between-species relationship with leaf size or leafing intensity—thus indicating no generalized potential cost of apical ***,the results point to species-specific treatment effects on meristem allocation patterns,and suggest importance for effects involving local variation in resource availability,and between-species variation in phenology,life history traits and susceptibility to herbivory.

Influence of proton pump inhibitors on gastritis diagnosis and pathologic gastric changes

AIM: To investigate the influence of proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) exposure on the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) gastritis and intestinal ***: chronic PPI use is associated with masking of H. pylori infection. Patients with H. pylori infection are predisposed to gastric and duodenal ulcers, and long-term infection with this organism has been associated with gastric mucosal atrophy and serious long-term complications, such as gastric lymphoma and adenocarcinoma. Three hundred patients diagnosed with gastritis between January 2008 and April 2010 were included in our study. The computerized medical database of these patients was reviewed retrospectively in order to assess whether the type of gastritis diagnosed(H. pylori vs non-H. pylori gastritis) is influenced by PPI exposure. H. pylori density was graded as low, if corresponding to mild density following the Updated Sydney System, or high, if corresponding to moderate or severe densities in the Updated Sydney ***: Patients were equally distributed between males and females with a median age at the time of diagnosis of 50 years old(range: 20-87). The histological types of gastritis were classified as H. pylori gastritis(n = 156, 52%) and non-H. pylori gastritis(n = 144, 48%). All patients with non-H. pylori gastritis had inactive chronic gastritis. Patients with no previous PPI exposure were more likely to be diagnosed with H. pylori gastritis than those with previous PPI exposure(71% vs 34.2%, P cted in the latter patients(1.4% vs 6.5%, P = 0.023). Multivariate analysis has also demonstrated that in the presence of previous PPI exposure(OR = 0.217, 95%cI: 0.123-0.385), GERD(OR = 0.317, 95%cI: 0.132-0.763, P = 0.01), alcohol intake(OR = 0.396, 95%cI: 0.195-0.804, P = 0.01), the detection of H. pylori was less likely. chronic use of PPIs may mask H. pylori infections promoting the diagnosis of non-H. pylori gastritis and le

The introduction of biodegradable implant materials has significantly improved the postoperative subjective feelings of patients within the past few decades,among which magnesium alloy is widely considered a favorable choice as its appropriate biodegradability and evident antibacterial ***,we reveal a semisolid rheo-formed Mg–Zn–Sr alloy ureteral implant that displayed suitable degradability and biocompatibility in a pig *** non-dendritic microstructure was observed in the rheo-formed alloy,which led to ca.47%increase in ultimate tensile strength(from 195.0 MPa to 288.1 MPa)and more homogeneous degradation process compared with the untreated *** post-interventional inflammation or pathological changes of the test animals were observed during the implantation period,and the corrosion rate(0.22±0.04 mm·y^(-1))perfectly fitted the clinical ureteral stent indwelling *** urine bacteria numbers decreased from 88±13 cFU·mL^(-1)at 7 weeks post operation to 59±8 cFU·mL^(-1)at 14 weeks post operation,which confirmed the evident antibacterial activity of the *** study demonstrates that the Mg–Zn–Sr alloy is clinically safe for urinary system,enabling its efficacious use as ureteral implant materials.
