Pre-treatment platelet counts as a prognostic and predictive factor in stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ rectal adenocarcinoma

AIM To investigate if pre-treatment platelet counts could provide prognostic information in patients with rectal adenocarcinoma that received neo-adjuvant treatment. METHODS Platelet number on diagnosis of stage II and III rectal cancer was evaluated in 51 patients receiving neoadjuvant treatment and for whom there were complete follow-up data on progression and survival, as well as pathologic outcome at the time of surgery. Pathologic responses on the surgical specimen of patients with lower platelet counts(150-300 × 10~9/L) were compared with these of patients with higher platelet counts(> 300 × 10~9/L) by the χ~2 test. Overall and progression free survival Kaplan-Meier curves of the two groups were constructed and compared with the Log-Rank *** A significant difference was present between the two groups in regards to pathologic response with patients with lower platelet counts being more likely to exhibit a good or complete response to neo-adjuvant treatment than patients with higher platelet counts(P = 0.015). Among other factors evaluated, there was also a significant difference between the carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) at presentation of patients that exhibited a good or complete response and those that had no response or a minimal to moderate response. Patients with a good or complete response were more likely to present with a CEA of less than 5 μg/L(P = 0.00066). There was no significant difference in overall and progression free survival between the two platelet count groups(Log-Rank tests P = 0.42 and P = 0.35, respectively).CONCLUSION In this retrospective analysis of stage II and III rectal cancer patients, platelet counts at the time of diagnosis had prognostic value for neo-adjuvant treatment pathologic response. Pre-treatment CEA also held prognostic value in regards to treatment effect.

Strain engineering as one of the most powerful techniques for tuning optical and electronic properties of III-nitrides requires reliable methods for strain *** this work,we rev.a.,that the linear model based on the experimental data limited to within a small range of biaxial strains(ve Raman study of strain with nanometer-scale spatial resolution is not valid for the binary wurtzite-structure group-III nitrides GaN and ***,we found that the discrepancy between the experimental values of strain and those calculated v.a.Raman spectroscopy increases as the strain in both GaN and AlN ***,a new model has been developed to describe the strain-induced Raman frequency shift in GaN and AlN for a wide range of biaxial strains(up to 2.5%).Finally,we proposed a new approach to correlate the Raman frequency shift and strain,which is based on the lattice coherency in the epitaxial layers of superlattice structures and can be used for a wide range of materials.

Significant concerns over the health,social and economic burdens of the two most common,and frequently co-misused drugs of abuse,alcohol and tobacco,has encouraged focused but separate health promotion and disease prevention ***,this separation of focus means that while individuals who present with alcohol-related problems are increasingly supported to attain and maintain abstinence from alcohol they are not routinely assisted to refrain from *** is tragically inopportune as alcohol and tobacco have an established"synergistic"effect on aerodigestive cancer ***,even when patients successfully tackle their alcohol problems they remain at increased risk for developing these cancers,especially if they continue to smoke.A case series is presented together with a discussion on how service provision for co-misuse could be improved to obv.a.e aerodigestive cancer *** the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco use in the United Kingdom,these observations may have far reaching implications for the individual,health provider(s)and wider society.

BACKGROUND Monkeypox(MPX)is a zoonotic infection that is endemic in Western and Central Africa along the Congo River *** has a high case fatality rate especially in younger age *** belongs to the virus family orthopoxvirus like *** is transmitted from wild animals to humans but human to human transmission has been *** is often a self-limited infection in endemic ***,attention has been given to MPX with the spread of infection to Europe and the United States of America(USA).There is currently sporadic infection of MPX in the USA especially amongst men who have sex with men(MSM).It is a serious life-threatening infection in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome co-infected individuals especially those who are treatment naïve with severe *** SUMMARY We report a 38-year old man who presented with rectal pain,and anal,torso,and facial *** computed tomography scan showed a near obstructive rectal mass with peri-anal *** was *** was started on tecovirimat(TPOXX)and HAART *** treatment provided included vaccinia immunoglobulin following his clinical *** This case highlights a rare presentation of MPX with peri-anal fistula and near obstructive rectal mass,and the significance of MPX as a differential diagnosis in proctitis in MSM in addition to other sexually transmitted infection like gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Traumatic Proptosis Proptosis is the forward displacement of the eye beyond the eyelids. The most common species affected is the dog, followed by the cat. Proptosis is uncommon in the horse. Brachycephalic breeds are affected most often, due to their shallow orbit. The causes of proptosis include blunt trauma to the head (common in cats, horses), bite wounds e.g. little dog attacked by big dog, overzealous restraint, and retrobulbar hemorrhage from clotting abnormalities.

Measurements of total phytate phosphorus content of diets may be deceptive as they do not indicate substrate availability for phytase; it may be that measurements of phytate susceptible to phytase effects are a more accurate measure of phosphorus(P) availability to the bird. To verify this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted to compare diets formulated to contain either high or low susceptible phytate, supplemented with either 0 or 500 FTU/kg phytase. Susceptible phytate was determined by exposing the feed samples to conditions that mimicked the average pH of the proximal gastrointestinal tract(pH 4.5) and the optimum temperature for phytase activity(37℃) and then measuring phytate dissolved. Ross 308 birds(n = 240) were fed one of 4 dietary treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial design; 2 diets with high(8.54 g/kg, 57.90% of total phytate) or low(5.77 g/kg, 46.33% of total phytate) susceptible phytate, containing 0 or 500 FTU/kg phytase. Diets were fed to broilers(12 replicate pens of 5 birds per pen) from d 0 to 28 post hatch. Birds fed diets high in susceptible phytate had greater phytate hydrolysis in the gizzard(P ve of phytase presence. Birds fed the high susceptible diets also had greater P solubility in the gizzard and Ca and P solubility in the jejunum and ileum(P vels.
