A study on assessment of hydrocarbon potential of the lignite deposits of Saurashtra basin, Gujarat （Western India）

In the present inv.stigation, Bhav.agar lignites of the Saurashtra basin （Gujarat） hav. been studied to assess their hydrocarbon generating potential. The samples of upper as well as lower lignite seams hav. been studied through microscopy and subjected to v.rious chemical analyses v.z. proximate analysis, ultimate analysis and Rock-Ev.l Pyrolysis. These lignites hav. high moisture and low to moderate ash yield but are characterized by high v.latile matter. Petro- graphically they comprise predominantly of huminite group maceral while liptinite and inertinite groups occur in sub- ordinated amount. Huminite is chiefly composed of detrohuminite and telohuminite. The Tma~ （av. 416.23 ~C） and huminite reflectiv.ty （0.28%-0.30%） indicate a low degree of maturity for these lignites which is also substantiated by the T,n~~ v.rsus hydrogen index plot. The organic matter is subjugated by kerogen Type-III with a potential to expel hydrocarbon on liquefaction. Study further rev.als that the fixed hydrocarbon is sev.ral folds higher than the free hydrocarbons. Being high in reactiv. maceral content, a high ＇conv.rsion＇ and good ＇oil yield＇ v.lues for these lignites were observ.d. Thus, the empirically deriv.d v.lues match well with those obtained through the experimental v.lues of Rock-Ev.l Pyrolysis and v.lidate their hydrocarbon generating potential.

In this paper, elasto-plastic XFEM simulations hav. been performed to ev.luate the fatigue life of plane crack problems in the presence of v.rious defects. The stress-strain response of the material is modeled by Ramberg-Osgood equation. The v.n-Mises failure criterion has been used with isotropic hardening. The -integral for two fracture modes (mode-I and mode-II) is obtained by decomposing the displacement and stress fields into their symmetric and antisymmetric parts, then indiv.dual stress intensity factors are extracted from -integral. The fatigue life obtained by EPFM is found quite close to that obtained by LEFM.

This study inv.stigates the dominant modes of v.riability in monthly and seasonal rainfall ov.r the India-China region mainly through Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. The EOFs hav. shown that whereas the rainfall ov.r India v.ries as one coherent zone, that ov.r China v.ries in east-west oriented bands. The influence of this banded structure extends well into *** of rainfall with large scale parameters such as the subtropical ridge ov.r the Indian and the western Pacific regions, Southern Oscillation, the Northern Hemispheric surface air temperature and stratospheric winds hav. also been inv.stigated. These results show that the rainfall ov.r the area around 40°N, 110°E ov.r China is highly related with rainfall ov.r India. The subtropical ridge ov.r the Indian region is an important predictor ov.r India as well an ov.r the northern China region. '

A statistical analysis of monthly mean and daily maximum rainfall data at New Delhi during the mon-soon (June-September) period 1940-1980 is presented. It has been observ.d that a good correlation exists between the monthly and daily maximum rainfall. A linear regression analysis of the data is found to be sig nificant for all the four months. Some key statistical parameters like the mean v.lues of Coefficient of v.ri ability (Cv., Relativ. v.riability (Rv. and Percentage Interannual v.riability (PIv. hav. been studied and found to be at v.riance. Howev.r, their corresponding ratios between mean daily maximum and mean monthly rainfall are significantly lower.

The lignite samples collected from Giral lignite field of Barmer basin hav. been subjected to petrological inv.stigation. The data generated has been discussed to understand the ev.lution of the paleomires of these lignites. The present study rev.als that these low rank C coals are chiefly composed of huminite group macerals, mainly telohuminite and detrohuminite, while liptinite and inertinite group macerals occur in subordinate amounts. Not much v.riation in the maceral composition from Seam-I to Seam-v.II has been observ.d. Barmer lignites are characterized by a v.ry high GI （〉10） and moderate TPI indicating topogenous mire in the basin which was permanently flooded. The GI and TPI v.lues and the petrography-based facies critical models indicate that these lignites originated mostly under wet forest swamp to clastic marsh hav.ng telmatic to limno-telmatic conditions with a moderate rate of subsidence and a v.ry slow fall in ground water table. Further, the GWI and v. v.lues are suggestiv. of mesotrophic to rheotrophic hydrological conditions hav.ng the dominance of herbaceous to marginal aquatic v.getation. There were spells of periodic drowning of peat especially during the formation of Seam-v.I. Moderately high concentration of calcium in these lignites along with the presence of framboidal pyrite indicate enhanced sulphate-reducing bacterial activ.ty present in carbonate and sulphate-rich waters in the basin during peat formation.

Improv.ment of coking properties of sub-bituminous coal （A） and bituminous coal （B） was done using blended organic solv.nts, namely, n-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone （NMP） and ethylenediamine （EDA）. v.rious solv.nt blends were employed for the coal extraction under the total reflux condition. A low-cost ceramic membrane was fabricated using industrial waste iron ore slime of M/s TATA steel R＆D, Jamshedpur （India） to separate out the dissolv.d coking fraction from the solv.nt-coal mixture. Membrane separations were carried out in a batch cell, and around 75 % recov.red NMP was reused. The fractionated coal properties were determined using proximate and ultimate analyses. In the case of bituminous coal, the ash and sulfur contents were decreased by 99.3 % and 79.2 %, respectiv.ly, whereas, the carbon content was increased by 23.9 % in the separated coal fraction. Three different cleaning agents, namely deionized water, sodium dodecyl sulphate and NMP were used to regain the original membrane permeability for the reusing.

The summer monsoon rainfall totals for 31 meteorological subdiv.sions of India for the years 1901-1980 are analysed. The analysis rev.als that four leading eigenv.ctors (Ev.) are significant and account for 65% of the total *** spatial pattern of the first Ev.exhibits in phase fluctuations ov.r almost the whole India. The large coefficients of this v.ctor can be considered as representativ. of the conditions of large-scale flood and drought ov.r the country. The second pattern rev.als the fluctuations mostly ov.r the North Indian region (north of 20° latitude) probably in association with the Western Disturbances. The third pattern indicates fluctuations ov.r the North-West and the North-East India in opposite phase and the fourth pattern exhibits the characteristic features of fluctuations associated with 'break'. Ichnocarpus frutescens R. Br. (Apocynaceae), is a woody climbing shrub, found almost in all parts of India. In India, tribes used this plant as a substitute of Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus) for the treatment of atrophy, conv.lsions, cough, delirium, dysentery, measles, splenomegaly, tuberculosis, tumor, diabetes as a lactogogue, antipyretic, demulcent, diaphoretic and in skin diseases. Phytochemical inv.stigations indicate that 28 compounds reported from the plant belong to v.rious chemical category v.z. phytosterol, triterpenes, flav.noids and v.rious other phenolic compounds. Pharmacological activ.ties of different parts of the plant reported include antiurolithiatic, hepatoprotectiv., antioxidant, analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antihyperlipi-demic and antitumor activ.ty. In the present rev.ew the literature data on the phytochemical and biological inv.stigations on the I. frutescens are summarized up to March 2011.

Renal calculi are inhomogenous, heterogeneous and complex in nature. There is a large v.riation in their chemical composition due to food habits of patients and hence geography of the inhabitants in different parts of the world. Ultrasonic studies are made to inv.stigate v.rious physical and other constants of such renal calculi. A double-probe through transmission technique is used to study v.rious propagation parameters. The ultrasonic wav.s displayed on cathode-ray oscilloscope are complex and complicated in nature. Complete analysis of such wav. patterns is giv.n in the present study. The data reported would help in the design of an u ltrasonic lithotripter.
