Role of Helicobacter pylorieradication in aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug users

Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin at any dosage and formulation represent well-established risk factors for the dev.lopment of uncomplicated and complicated peptic ulcer disease accounting for the majority of such cases. Although the interaction between H pylori and NSAID/aspirin use in the same indiv.duals was questioned in some epidemiological studies, it has now become widely accepted that they are at least independent risk factors for peptic ulcer disease. According to data from randomized interv.ntion trials, naiv. NSAID users certainly benefit from testing for H pylori infection and, if positiv.,H pylori eradication therapy prior to the initiation of NSAID. A similar strategy is also suggested for naiv. aspirin users, although the efficacy of such an approach has not been ev.luated yet. Strong data also support that chronic aspirin users with a recent ulcer complication should be tested for H pyloriinfection and, if positiv., receiv. H pylori eradication therapy after ulcer healing, while they appear to benefit from additional long-term therapy with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).A similar approach is often recommended to chronic aspirin users at a high risk of ulcer complication. H pylori eradication alone does not efficiently protect chronic NSAID users with a recent ulcer complication or those at a high-risk, who certainly should be treated with long-term PPI therapy, but H pylori eradication may be additionally offered ev.n in this setting. In contrast, testing for H pylorior PPI therapy is not recommended for chronic NSAID/aspirin users with no ulcer complications or those at a low risk of complications.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly encountered cardiac arrhythmia, and is a significant source of healthcare expenditures throughout the world. It is an arrhythmia with a v.ry clearly defined predisposition for indiv.duals of adv.nced age, and this fact has led to intense study of the mechanistic links between aging and AF. By promoting oxidativ. damage tomultiple subcellular and cellular structures, reactiv. oxygen species (ROS) hav. been shown to induce the intra- and extra-cellular changes necessary to promote the pathogenesis of *** addition, the generation and accumulation of ROS hav. been intimately linked to the cellular processeswhich underlie aging. This rev.ew begins with an ov.rv.ew of AF pathophysiology, and introduces the critical structures which, when damaged, predispose an otherwise healthy atrium toAF. The av.ilable ev.dence thatROS can lead to damage of these critical structures is then rev.ewed. Finally, the ev.dence linking the process of aging to the pathogenesis of AF is discussed.

Protectiv. Composite Coatings Formed on Mg Alloy Surface by PEO Using Organofluorine Materials

The results of the surface modification of magnesium alloys by plasma electrolytic oxidation（PEO） and subsequent treatment in suspension of the superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene（SPTFE） or telomeric solution of tetrafluoroethylene（TFE） are presented. Composite coatings hav. been obtained by dipping with subsequent heat treatment. Electrochemical, tribological properties and wettability of protectiv. composite coatings hav. been inv.stigated. Composite coatings formed on PEO-layer by fourfold treatment of samples in SPTFE suspension possess best protectiv. properties. The obtained coatings decrease the corrosion current density（5.4 × 10^（-11） A cm^（-2）） and wear（7.6 × 10^（-7）mm^3（Nm）^（-1））, and increase the polarisation resistance（1.7 × 10~9 cm^2） and impedance modulus（1.9 × 10~9 cm^2） by orders of magnitude in comparison with unprotected magnesium alloy and base PEO-coating. The highest v.lue of contact angle（CA） has been obtained for coatings with triple application in telomeric solution. CA for such composite coatings attains（171 ± 2）？, as the result of multimodal roughness of the composite coating＇s surface.

Roles of the main olfactory and v.meronasal systems in the detection of androstenone in inbred strains of mice

We inv.stigated the role of the main olfactory and accessory olfactory systems （MOS and AOS respectiv.ly） in the detection of androstenone. We used the following experimental approaches： behav.oral, surgical remov.l of the v.meronasal organ （v.X） followed by histochemical v.rification and Fos immunohistochemistry. Using a Y-maze paradigm we estimated sensitiv.ty of NZB/B1Nj and CBA/j mice to androstenone. CBA mice were 2,000-fold more sensitiv. to androstenone than NZB mice. v.X caused a 4-tol6-fold decrease in sensitiv.ty to androstenone in highly-sensitiv. CBA mice, but did not affect thresholds in NZB mice. Results indicate the inv.lv.ment of the MOS and AOS in the detection of androstenone. We observ.d a specific pattern of Fos-positiv. cells in the main olfactory bulb of CBA mice but not in NZB mice subsequent to exposure of mice to androstenone; the compound activ.ted cells in the accessory olfactory bulb in both strains of mice, indicating the inv.lv.ment of the v.meronasal organ. Patterns of Fos-positiv. cells in the v.meronasal organ were recorded subsequent to exposure to androstenone. Fos-positiv. receptor cells in the v.meronasal organ of CBA and NZB mice were different, in CBA mice Fos-positiv. cells were noted in both the basal and apical zones, howev.r, in NZB mice activ.tion was observ.d only in the apical zone [Current Zoology 56 （6）： 813-818, 2010].

In this paper we compare the wear behav.our of a v.cuum-heat-treated ESR AISI M2 high-speed steel and the same steel that was v.cuum heat treated in conjunction with a deep-cryogenic treatment at -196 °C. Four different tempering temperatures for the specimens austenized at the same austenitizing temperature were carefully selected to obtain v.rious in-adv.nce-determined combinations of the microstructures, the fracture toughness, KIc and the Rockwell-C hardness. Each of the eight specimens was therefore characterised by these microstructures and resulting material properties. The wear study was performed using a reciprocating sliding dev.ce under well-controlled contact conditions. Relativ.ly high loads were used to prov.de enough wear for a comparison of the selected samples. A much harder and dissimilar model counter-material, i.e. silicon nitride ceramic, was used in order to av.id excessiv. wear of the counter samples and adhesion, which could occur in contacts with similar materials (metals/steels) under such high loads and in non-lubricated conditions. The wear behav.ours were then compared and discussed in terms of these microstructures and the related properties. The differences in the wear resistance obtained in our inv.stigation were as high as an order of magnitude. Howev.r, the beneficial effects are not a direct result of the type of the treatment, but relate to a proper combination of the resulting fracture toughness and the hardness. The more uniform and moderate v.lues, which, howev.r, tend to be obtained with a deep-cryogenic treatment, are beneficial to the high wear resistance of the selected high-speed steel.

Lunar surface mineralogy using hyperspectral data： Implications for primordial crust in the Earth-Moon system

Mineralogy of the Lunar surface prov.des important clues for understanding the composition and ev.- lution of the primordial crust in the Earth-Moon system. The primary rock forming minerals on the Moon such as pyroxene, oliv.ne and plagioclase are potential tools to ev.luate the Lunar Magma Ocean （LMO） hypothesis. Here we use the data from Moon Mineralogy Mapper （M3） onboard the Chandrayaan- 1 project of India, which prov.des v.sible/Near Infra Red （NIR） spectral data （hyperspectral data） of the Lunar surface to gain insights on the surface mineralogy. Band shaping and spectral profiling methods are used for identifying minerals in fiv. sites： the Moscov.ense basin, Orientale basin, Apollo basin, Wegener crater-highland, and Hertzsprung basin. The common presence of plagioclase in these sites is in conformity with the anorthositic composition of the Lunar crust. Pyroxenes, oliv.ne and Fe-Mg-spinel from the sample sites indicate the presence of gabbroic and basaltic components. The compositional difference in pyroxenes suggests magmatic differentiation on the Lunar surface. Oliv.ne contains OH/H20 band, indicating hydrous phase in the primordial magmas.

MODELING HEADCUT DEv.LOPMENT AND MIGRATION IN UPLAND CONCENTRATED FLOWS

On hillslopes and agricultural fields, discrete areas of intense, localized soil erosion commonly take place in the form of migrating headcuts. These erosional features significantly increase soil loss and landscape degradation, yet the unsteady, transient, and migratory habits of headcuts complicate their phenomenological and erosional characterization. Here a unique experimental facility was constructed to examine activ.ly migrating headcuts typical of upland concentrated flows. Essential components of the facility include a deep soil cav.ty with external drainage, rainfall simulator, capacity for ov.rland flow, and a v.deo recording technique for data collection. Results from these experiments show that: (1) after a short period of adjustment, headcut migration attained a steady-state condition, where the rate of migration, scour hole geometry, and sediment discharge remain constant with time; (2) boundary conditions of higher rates of ov.rland flow, steeper bed slopes, and larger initial headcut heights produced systematically larger scour holes with higher rates of soil erosion; and (3) during migration, the turbulent flow structure within the scour hole remained unchanged, consisting of an ov.rfall nappe at the brink transitioning into a reattached wall jet with two recirculation eddies within the plunge pool. The systematic behav.or of headcut dev.lopment and migration enabled the application of modified jet impingement theory to predict with good success the characteristics of the impinging jet, the depth of maximum scour, the rate of headcut migration, and the rate of sediment erosion. These laboratory data and the analytical formulation can be used in conjunction with soil erosion prediction technology to improv. the management of agricultural areas impacted by headcut dev.lopment and ephemeral gully erosion.

Instability and sensitiv.ty analysis of flows using OpenFOAM~

The present contributions deal with the dev.lopment and implementation of the direct and adjoint incompressible Nav.e-Stokes equations in a matrix-free time-stepping context making use of the open-source OpenFOAM~ （open source field operation and manipulation） C ＋＋ tool- box. It is shown that a few minor modifications in the source code can enable these multi-purpose computational fluid dynamics （CFD） solv.rs to carry out global instability analysis of three- dimensional flows of engineering interest, exploiting all additional capabilities of such codes. The strength of this methodology is demonstrated through the analysis of an interesting selection of ooen and wall-bounded flows.

CLUSTERING PATENTS USING NON-EXHAUSTIv. Ov.RLAPS

Patent documents are unique external sources of information that rev.al the core technology underlying new inv.ntions. Patents also serv. as a strategic data source that can be mined to discov.r state-of-the-art technical dev.lopment and subsequently help guide R＆D inv.stments. This research incorporates an ontology schema to extract and represent patent concepts. A clustering algorithm with non-exhaustiv. ov.rlaps is proposed to ov.rcome deficiencies with exhaustiv. clustering methods used in patent mining and technology discov.ry. The non-exhaustiv. clustering approach allows for the clustering of patent documents with ov.rlapping technical findings and claims, a feature that enables the grouping of patents that define related key innov.tions. Legal adv.sors can use this approach to study potential cases of patent infringement or dev.se strategies to av.id litigation. The case study demonstrates the use of non-exhaustiv. ov.rlaps algorithm by clustering US and japan radio frequency identification （RFID） patents and by analyzing the legal implications of automated discov.ry of patent infringement.

Interlayer Coupling in Co/Ti/（Gd-Co）/Ti Artificial Layered Ferrimagnet

The magnetic properties and the structure of [Co/Ti/Gd0.36 Co0.64/Ti]4/Co multilayers are inv.stigated by means of torque magnetometer, v.brating sample magnetometer and transv.rse magneto-optic Kerr effect （TMOKE） measurements and the atomic force microscopy. Due to interlayer exchange interaction, Co and Gd-Co layers form a macroscopic ferrimagnetic system. The change in the sign of the TMOKE hysteresis loops near the compensation temperature and field induced magnetic phase transitions are found. The latter can be characterized by a critical field which shows a linear v.riation with the temperature. The magnetic properties of these multilayers from many points of v.ew are similar to those of bulk ferrimagnets.
