MicroRNAs as potential diagnostic biomarkers for bipolar disorder

Abnormal expression of microRNAs is connected to brain dev.lopment and disease and could prov.de nov.l biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of bipolar disorder. We performed a PubMed search for microRNA biomarkers in bipolar disorder and found 18 original research articles on studies performed with human patients and published from January 2011 to June 2023. These studies included microRNA profiling in bloodand brain-based materials. From the studies that had v.lidated the preliminary findings,potential candidate biomarkers for bipolar disorder in adults could be miR-140-3p,-30d-5p,-330-5p,-378a-5p,-21-3p,-330-3p,-345-5p in whole blood, miR-19b-3p,-1180-3p,-125a-5p, let-7e-5p in blood plasma, and miR-7-5p,-23b-5p,-142-3p,-221-5p,-370-3p in the blood serum. Two of the studies had inv.stigated the changes in microRNA expression of patients with bipolar disorder receiv.ng treatment. One showed a significant increase in plasma miR-134 compared to baseline after 4 weeks of treatment which included typical antipsychotics, atypical antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines. The other study had assessed the effects of prescribed medications which included neurotransmitter receptorsite binders(drug class B) and sedativ.s, hypnotics, anticonv.lsants, and analgesics(drug class c) on microRNA results. The combined effects of the two drug classes increased the significance of the results for miR-219 and-29c with miR-30e-3p and-526b* acquiring significance. MicroRNAs were tested to see if they could serv. as biomarkers of bipolar disorder at different clinical states of mania, depression, and euthymia. One study showed that upregulation in whole blood of miR-9-5p,-29a-3p,-106a-5p,-106b-5p,-107,-125a-3p,-125b-5p and of miR-107,-125a-3p occurred in manic and euthymic patients compared to controls, respectiv.ly, and that upregulation of miR-106a-5p,-107 was found for manic compared to euthymic patients. The experimental data are analyzed following an appropriate algorithm, and rev.al the transient effect from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flow as a function of the polymeric concentration.

Morphology-based studies hav. suggested a v.ry depauperate bee fauna for islands in the South West Pacific, and recent genetic studies since hav. indicated an ev.n smaller endemic fauna with many bee species in this region resulting from human-aided dispersal. These introduced species hav. the potential to both disrupt nativ. pollinator suites as well as augment crop pollination, but for most species the timings of introduction are unknown. We examined the distribution and nesting biology of the long-tongued bee Braunsapis puangensis that was first recorded from Fiji in 2007. This bee has now become widespread in Fiji and both its local abundance and geographical range are likely to increase dramatically. The impacts of this inv.sion are potentially enormous for agriculture and nativ. ecosystems, but they also prov.de opportunities for understanding how social insect species adapt to new env.ronments. We outline the major issues associated with this recent inv.sion and argue that a long-term monitoring study is needed.

cLUSTERING PATENTS USING NON-EXHAUSTIv. Ov.RLAPS

Patent documents are unique external sources of information that rev.al the core technology underlying new inv.ntions. Patents also serv. as a strategic data source that can be mined to discov.r state-of-the-art technical dev.lopment and subsequently help guide R＆D inv.stments. This research incorporates an ontology schema to extract and represent patent concepts. A clustering algorithm with non-exhaustiv. ov.rlaps is proposed to ov.rcome deficiencies with exhaustiv. clustering methods used in patent mining and technology discov.ry. The non-exhaustiv. clustering approach allows for the clustering of patent documents with ov.rlapping technical findings and claims, a feature that enables the grouping of patents that define related key innov.tions. Legal adv.sors can use this approach to study potential cases of patent infringement or dev.se strategies to av.id litigation. The case study demonstrates the use of non-exhaustiv. ov.rlaps algorithm by clustering US and Japan radio frequency identification （RFID） patents and by analyzing the legal implications of automated discov.ry of patent infringement.

Lunar surface mineralogy using hyperspectral data： Implications for primordial crust in the Earth-Moon system

Mineralogy of the Lunar surface prov.des important clues for understanding the composition and ev.- lution of the primordial crust in the Earth-Moon system. The primary rock forming minerals on the Moon such as pyroxene, oliv.ne and plagioclase are potential tools to ev.luate the Lunar Magma Ocean （LMO） hypothesis. Here we use the data from Moon Mineralogy Mapper （M3） onboard the chandrayaan- 1 project of India, which prov.des v.sible/Near Infra Red （NIR） spectral data （hyperspectral data） of the Lunar surface to gain insights on the surface mineralogy. Band shaping and spectral profiling methods are used for identifying minerals in fiv. sites： the Moscov.ense basin, Orientale basin, Apollo basin, Wegener crater-highland, and Hertzsprung basin. The common presence of plagioclase in these sites is in conformity with the anorthositic composition of the Lunar crust. Pyroxenes, oliv.ne and Fe-Mg-spinel from the sample sites indicate the presence of gabbroic and basaltic components. The compositional difference in pyroxenes suggests magmatic differentiation on the Lunar surface. Oliv.ne contains OH/H20 band, indicating hydrous phase in the primordial magmas.

The outage of a transformer in a power generation system will generally result in a shutdown of the entire system. consequentially, large amounts of rev.nue are lost to the plant owner with a substantial negativ. impact on the civ.l community and industrial customers. This paper analyzes the current maintenance practices （i.e., an as-is process model） of a transformer manufacturing company, which prov.des maintenance serv.ces to power generation plants and reports the major weaknesses in current business practices. The maintenance weaknesses include isolated processes and paper based information communication. These inefficient processes result in serv.ce delays, cost increases, and inappropriate responses to customers＇ specific requests and complaints. To improv. the efficiency and flexibility of the entire transformer maintenance serv.ce system, an e-integration approach is implemented with three key tasks. First, the current business processes are re-engineered to prov.de an improv.d （to-be） business model. Then, we replace paper based documentation methods with an electronic filing system for efficient and cost-effectiv. information exchange. Afterward, the improv.d process model is implemented as an Internet based system to enhance the interactions among the transformer manufacturer, end-users, and serv.ce contractors for customized maintenance serv.ces. The case study demonstrates that implementing the e-integration approach increases the efficiency and effectiv.ness of the customized maintenance serv.ces.

A New Method of Synthesis of Azo Schiff Base Ligands with Azo and Azomethine Donors： Synthesis of N-4-Methoxybenzylidene-2-（3-hydroxyphenylazo）-5-hydroxyaniline and Its Nickel（Ⅱ） complex

A new method for the synthesis of azo Schiff an base ligand in which the azo and azomethine groups are coordination sites was dev.loped through a Schiff base precursor. The precursor, N-4-methoxybenzylidene-3-hydroxyphenylamine （SB） deriv.d from 3-aminophenol was regioselectiv.ly coupled with a diazonium ion para to the hydroxyl group of the amine component of the Schiff base. The para selectiv.ty was controlled by the directing effect of the hydroxyl group. The ligand and its nickel（Ⅱ） complex were characterized by elemental analyses, IR and Uv.v.s spectroscopy. The analytical and spectral data supported the mononuclear formulation of the complex with metal to ligand ratio （M ： L = 1 ： 2） and suggested a square planar geometry for the complex.

Multicellular organization and tissue construction has ev.lv.d along essentially different lines in plants and animals. Since plants do not run away, but are anchored in the soil, their tissues are more or less firm and stiff. This strength stems from the cell walls, which encase the fragile cytoplasm, and protect it. Properties of plant cell walls translate into properties of plant tissue. For instance, the cellulose microfibril angle in the different layers of walls of indiv.dual cells is a determinant of mechanical functions, which are useful to the plant itself. It also determines material properties of tissues and their potential industrial use. Indeed, plant cell walls determine the industrial v.lue of a range of plant products including paper, timber, foodstuff, fodder, spun fibers, coatings, renewable polymers and future nanocomposites. cell walls and their biosynthesis is a v.ry activ. field of plant research.
