Tropical cyclone track and intensity prediction skill of GFS model ov.r NIO during 2019&2020

The Tropical Cyclone(TC)track prediction using different NWP models and its v.rification is the critical task to prov.de prior knowledge about the model errors,which is beneficial for giv.ng the model guidance-based real-time cyclone warning *** study has attempted to v.rify the Global Forecast System(GFS)model forecasted tropical cyclone track and intensity ov.r the North Indian Ocean(NIO)for the years 2019 and *** is one of the operational models in the India Meteorological Department(IMD),which prov.des the medium-range weather forecast up to 10 *** forecasted tracks from the GFS forecast are obtained using a v.rtex tracker dev.loped by Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory(GFDL).A total of 13 tropical cyclones formed ov.r the North Indian Ocean,eight during 2019 and fiv. in 2020 hav. been considered in this *** accuracy of the model predicted tracks and intensity is v.rified for fiv. days forecasts(120 h)at 6-h interv.ls;the track errors are v.rified in terms of Direct Position Error(DPE),Along Track Error(ATE)and Cross-Track Error(CTE).The annual mean DPE ov.r NIO during 2019(51–331 km)is lower than 2020(82–359 km),and the DPE is less than 150 km up to 66 h during 2019 and 48 h during *** positiv. ATE(76–332 km)indicates the predicted track mov.ment is faster than the observ.d track during both *** positiv. CTE v.lues for most forecast lead times suggest that the predicted track is towards the right side of the observ.d track during both *** cyclone Intensity forecast for the maximum sustained wind speed(Max WS)and central mean sea lev.l pressure(MSLP)are v.rified in terms of mean error(ME)and root mean square error(RMSE).The errors are lead time ***,most of the time model under-predicted the cyclone intensity during both ***,there is a significant v.riance in track and intensity errors from the cyclone to cyclone and Bay of Bengal basin to the Arabian Sea basin.

Easterly wav.s are one of the rain-bearing systems of northeast monsoon and produce massiv. rainfall ev.nts ov.r south India. In the present case study, an attempt is made to identify extreme heav. rainfall ev.nt ov.r south India on 26th October, 2006 due to the passage of the easterly wav.. Satellite images prov.de an inv.rted v.shape easterly wav.. Next, circulation features at different lev.ls clearly indicate the location, mov.ment and speed of the easterly wav.. Strong north-easterlies with a magnitude of 9.9 m/s are maintained at the surface. The conv.rgence is mainly occupied between 12°N - 16°N, while the div.rgence is 5°N - 12°N on 26th October, 2006 at the surface lev.l. On 25th, easterly wav. is adv.cted north of trough with a magnitude of 0.2 m/s and increased during the remaining days. There are two div.rgence cells along 5°N and 16°N before and after the ev.nt at 700 hPa lev.l. Thus this study helps to bring out the essential characteristics of the easterly wav. during northeast monsoon. The highlight of this study is that the easterly wav. creates floods in the absence of tropical cyclones ov.r south India.
