Analytical wo.k inv.lv.s in the design o. air-co.ditio.ing system is o.ten time co.suming and labo.io.s. This wo.k therefo.e aims at dev.lo.ing a v.sual interactiv. co.puter package fo. the design o. air co.ditio.ing system using the internatio.al co.ference centre, Univ.rsity o. Ibadan, Nigeria as a case study. Pro.edures fo. calculating heat gain thro.gh v.rio.s building co.po.ents were discussed in detail. Co.ling lo.d analysis was carried o.t using standard co.ling lo.d equatio.s o.tained fro. the American So.iety o. Heating, Refrigeratio. and Air co.ditio.ing Engineers (ASHRAE) handbo.k. A co.puter pro.ram was dev.lo.ed using jav. pro.ramming language to.co.pute the to.al co.ling lo.d in the building. The result fro. the co.puter pro.ram was o.tained within a v.ry sho.t perio. o. time when co.pared with that o. the manual o.e. The co.ling lo.d o. the building o.tained was 3,194,414 btu/hr;a v.sual interactiv. co.puter package fo. the design o. air co.ditio.ing system has been dev.lo.ed and tested po.itiv.ly;hence can be used to.design air co.ditio.ing system fo. any building.

Nigeria to.ay faces serio.s challenge in pro.0}ding adequate energy to.meet the needs o. her citizenry. Effo.ts are currently geared to.ards generatio. o. mo.e energy to.ease the pro.lem. While these effo.ts are co.mendable, it is equally desirable to.explo.e ways to.minimize co.sumptio. o. generated energy. The o.jectiv. o. this wo.k is to.inv.stigate the effect o. building o.ientatio. o. energy demand in buildings. This paper co.sidered the use o. standard design co.sideratio.s, fundamental co.ling lo.d equatio.s and the guidelines stipulated by the American So.iety o. Heating, Co.ling and Air co.ditio.ing Engineers (ASHRAE). The study takes the designs o. three buildings within the Univ.rsity o. Ibadan, Nigeria into.co.sideratio. with the v.ew to.harness the energy sav.ng po.entials thro.gh building o.ientatio. and selectio. o. efficient co.ling equipment. The results o.tained were 155.34, 224.75, 86.35 kW and 163.60, 232.04 and 90.64 kW fo. the three lecture env.lo.es including the Faculty o. Science, CBN and the Department o. Chemistry lecture theatres using the No.th-So.th and East-West building o.ientatio.s respectiv.ly. Increase in energy demand o. 7.96, 7.29 and 4.29 kW was thus o.tained with the East-West building o.ientatio. o.0}r No.th-So.th. Energy efficiency is thus guaranteed with No.th-So.th building o.ientatio..

Energy co.sumptio. in bo.h residential and public buildings has been established glo.ally as been significantly high. The need to.inco.po.ate energy efficiency in building therefo.e beco.es imperativ. in o.der to.minimize the co.sumptio. lev.l. This wo.k therefo.e examines the effect o. building o.ientatio. co.pled with different building material co.po.itio. o. energy efficiency in building within majo. Nigeria climatic zo.es. The metho.o.o.y ado.ted in this study entails carrying o.t a lo.d surv.y and thereby calculating the co.ling lo.d required to.co.ditio. the building space in two.selected different o.ientatio.s within the majo. Nigerian climatic zo.es. The standard co.ling lo.d equatio.s were utilized in the ev.luatio. o. the v.rio.s co.ling lo.ds. The selected lo.atio.s co.sidered within majo. Nigerian climatic zo.es are Ibadan in the So.th West, Jo. in the middle belt and Maiduguri in the No.th East. The co.ling lo.d results o.tained fo. the two.different o.ientatio.s are as fo.lo.s;151.45 kW and 163.17 kW fo. Ibadan, Maiduguri: 164 kW and 175.78 kW, and 131.77 kW, 143.4 kW fo. Jo.. The first o.ientatio. being No.th/So.th lo.gitudinal placement o. the building while the seco.d o.ientatio. is East/West lo.gitudinal placement respectiv.ly. The study established that the seco.d o.ientatio. generated mo.e co.ling lo.d. It is therefo.e co.cluded that the first o.ientatio. which is the No.th/So.th lo.gitudinal placement o. the building is best reco.mended. It also.established the dependence o. co.ling lo.d o. the climatic co.ditio. o. the building’s lo.atio.. Bo.h building material co.po.itio.s co.pled with its o.ientatio. and climatic co.ditio. therefo.e play majo. significant ro.e o. the energy co.sumptio. in a building space.
