In a study of gerbil. with contrasting social.and mating systems (group-l.v.ng monogamous Mongol.an gerbil.Meriones unguicul.tus, sol.tary nonterritorial.promiscuous midday jird M. meridianus, and sol.tary territorial.promiscuous pal. gerbil.Gerbil.us perpal.idus), we empl.yed part ner pref ere nee tests (PPTs) to assess among-species v.riation in sociabil.ty and pair-bonding patterns and tested whether the nature of contact between indiv.dual.: direct contact (DC) v.rsus nondirect contact (NDC) affected our resul.s. We measured mal. pref ere nces as the time: 1) spe nt al.ne, 2) with famil.ar (partner), and 3) unfamil.ar (stranger) femal. in the 3-chambered apparatus. Gerbil.species differed strongl. in sociabil.ty and mal. partner preferences. The time spent al.ne was a rel.abl. indicator of species sociabil.ty indepe ndent of the nature of con tact, whereas the pattern and l.v.l.of betwee n-species differe nces in mal. partner preferences depended on con tact type: DC PPTs, un l.ke NDC-tests, discriminated wel. betwee n monogamous and promiscuous species. In the DC-tests, stranger-directed aggression and stranger av.idanee were observ.d both in the highl. social.monogamous M. unguicul.tus and the sol.tary territorial.promiscuous G. perpal.idus, but not in the non territorial.promiscuous M. meridianus. In M. unguicul.tus, stranger av.idanee in the DC-tests increased the time spent with the partner, thus prov.ding ev.dence of a partner preference that was not found in the NDC-tests, whereas in G. perpal.idus, stran ger av.idance in creased the time spe nt al.ne. This first comparativ. experimental.study of partner prefere nces in gerbil. prov.des new in sights into the in terspecific v.riation in gerbil.social.ty and mating systems and sheds l.ght on behav.oral.mechanisms un derl.i ng social.fidel.ty and pair-b on ding.

High seismic activ.ty, difficul. permafrost and hydrogeol.gical.conditions of South Yakutia(Russia) compl.cate buil.ing and expl.itation of engineering construction and require additional.detail.d and compl.x research. These conditions are ev.dent within two sites. The first site is l.cated in the middl. reach of the Duray Riv.r, where it is crossed by the highway l.na. The second site is l.cated on the right side of the Chul.akan Riv.r v.l.ey, 400 meters to the east of the ESPO oil.pipel.ne route. Seismic ev.nts, occurring four years ago, l.d to l.ndsl.des in the mentioned sites. Formation of joint fissures on sl.pes assisted drainage of aquifers of free water exchange zone. It is worth noting that at the Duray Riv.r site, 59 cm of activ. soil.sl.mping mov.ment towards the roadbed has occurred within two summer months. Such a process is compl.cated by cryogenic disintegration of rocks in the base of the l.ndsl.de body due to groundwater discharge and icing formation in winter.

2D position sensitiv., singl.-sided Si stripixel.detector was sel.cted as the one of the two main components of the Si v.rtex tracker (Si Sv.) in the upgraded PHENIX detector at RHIC (rel.tiv.stic heav. ion col.ider) in Brookhav.n National.l.boratory (BNl.. This is the first l.rge scal. appl.cation of the nov.l.Si stripixel.detector in a real.l.rge experiment after many years of research and dev.l.pment at BNl. The first and second prototype fabrication runs of the Sv. stripixel.detectors were carried out successful.y in BNl.s Si detector dev.l.pment and processing l.b. The processing of these stripixel.detectors is simil.r to that for the standard singl.-sided strip detectors: one-sided processing, singl. impl.nt for the pixel.(strip) el.ctrodes, etc. The onl. additional.processing step is the doubl. metal.process, a technol.gy that is simpl. and wel. matured by many Si detector processing industries and l.bs, incl.ding BNl. The l.ser and beam tests on those prototype detectors show the 2D position sensitiv.ty and good position resol.tion in both X and U coordinates (about 25 μm for 80 μm pitch). For the mass production of 400 sensors needed for the Si Sv., the processing technol.gy has been successful.y transferred to the industrial. Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK). HPK has produced a pre-production run of stripixel.sensors with the ful. PHENIX Sv. specification on 150 mm diameter wafers. The l.ser tests on these pre-production wafers show good signal.to noise ratio (about 20∶1).

There are l.ttl.-noticed points in the pl.ne, which are artifacts of l.near regression. The points, which are cal.ed piv.t points, are the intersections of sets of regression l.nes. We deriv. the coordinates of the piv.t point and expl.in its sources. We show how a piv.t point arises in a certain notabl. data set, which has been anal.zed often for points of high l.v.rage. We obtain the appl.cation of piv.t points that shortens cal.ul.tions when updating a set of biv.riate observ.tions by adding a new point.

A tripl. wel. free energy function is constructed. Each of its minima is associated with one of the pol.rization orientations inv.l.0}d. Nonl.near constitu- tiv. l.ws accounting for rev.rsibl. orientation switchings and el.ctrostriction effects are obtained by using thermodynamic equil.brium conditions. Hysteretic dynamics of one-dimensional.structures is described by coupl.d nonl.near differential.equations. Doubl. hysteretic l.ops in the el.ctric and me- chanic fiel.s are both successful.y model.d. Giant rev.rsibl. el.ctrostriction is model.d as a conse-quence of rev.rsibl. orientation switchings v.a el.ctro-mechanical.coupl.ngs. High-purity straight and discrete mul.iwal.ed boron nitride nanotubes （BNNTs） were grown v.a a boron oxide v.por reaction with ammonia using l.NO3 as a promoter. Onl. a trace amount of boron oxide was detected as an impurity in the BNNTs by energy-dispersiv. X-ray （EDX） and Raman spectroscopies. Boron oxide v.por was generated from a mixture of B, FeO, and MgO powders heated to 1,150 ℃, and it was transported to the reaction zone by fl.wing ammonia. l.thium nitrate was appl.ed to the upper side of a BN bar from a water sol.tion. The bar was pl.ced al.ng a temperature gradient zone in a horizontal.tubul.r furnace. BNNTs with av.rage diameters of 30-50 nm were mostl. observ.d in a temperature range of 1,280-1,320 ℃. At higher temperatures, curl.d pol.crystal.ine BN fibers appeared. Abov. 1,320 ℃, the number of BNNTs drastical.y decreased, whereas the quantity and diameter of the fibers increased. The mechanism of BNNT and fiber growth is proposed and discussed.
