The largest accidental marine oil spill (4.9 million barrels) in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) seabed (1600 m) caused by the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in 2010, put to the test once again the resilient capacity of the pelagic and benthic realms of this Large Marine Ecosystem. Many are the ecological services provided by its waters (fisheries, tourism, aquaculture and fossil fuel reserves) to neighboring countries (US, Mexico and Cuba). However, the unprecedented volumes of hydrocarbons, gas and chemical dispersants (Corexit) introduced in the system, represent ecological stressors whose deleterious effects are still the subject of civil claims and scientific controversy. Presumably, the short scale effects were confined to the Gulf’s northeastern shallow waters, and the combined actions of weathering, biodegradation, and oil recovery left the system almost under pre-spill conditions. Unfortunately, surface and subsurface oil plumes were detected in the spill aftermath, and their dispersion trajectories threatened Mexico EEZ. Surface oil slicks were detected in the pristine waters of northern Yucatán, while subsurface oil plumes from the Macondo’s well blowout were dangerously advancing southwest towards key fishing grounds in the northwestern GoM. This disaster prompted the Mexican government to implement an ambitious ocean monitoring program adopting a bottom-up approach focused on building a base line for more than 42 physicochemical and biological variables for water, sediment and biota from the continental shelf-slope region of the NW GoM. Technological constraints have precluded systematic observations in the vast Mexican EEZ that could discriminate natural variability and oil seep emissions from antropic disturbances. Therefore, preliminary risk analyses relied on seasonal and historical records. We investigate the DC transport properties of 60v_(2)O_(5)-5P_(2)O_(5)-(35-x)B_(2)O_(3)-xDy_(2)O_(3)(x=0.4,0.6,0.8,1.0 and 1.2 mol%)glasses as function of temperature which were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching *** glasses are characterised by thermo gravimetric-differential thermal analysis(TG-DTA).Activation energy(E_(DC))is obtained from Arrhenius plots of temperature-dependent DC conductivity,and it is found to be 0.30 ev for high conducting *** order to understand the role of Dy_(2)O_(3) in these glasses,the density and molar volume are *** results show that molar volume of the glass increases with the increasing of Dy2O_(3) *** ionic conductivity is found to be dominant over the electronic conductivity and varies between 82%and 96%.

The nutritive value of 25 edible Orthoptera in Mexico is shown. Protein content ranges from 43.93% to 77.13% (mix of Edible Acrididade of Puebla). Fat percentage goes from 4.22% to 34.21%. Richest species in ashes were Arphia fallax S., Sphenarium histrio G. and Sphenarium purpurascens Ch. with 16.5%. Energy contribution varies from 14.05 kJ to 21.88 kJ. Their amino acids profile was compared with the WHO/FAO/UNU Pattern (1985). The total quantity of es-sential amino acids that all insects species provides was superior to those signaled in the pattern. The highest quantity (53.60 g) was for Sphenarium histrio G. Chemical score goes from 50% to 88%. In vitamins, the highest value in Thiamine and Riboflavine was for Sphenarium magnum M., in Niacine for Sphenarium borrei B., in vitamin C and for vitamin D Acheta domestica L., and in vitamin A for Periplaneta americana L. In minerals, all species were very rich in magnesium. All the edible orthopterans results were compared with those of the most conventional mexican foods used to obtain proteins. The quantity and quality of the nutrients that these edible orthopterans allows, provides a significant contribution to the nutrition of the peasants who eat them.

Effect of vanadium and chromium on the microstructural features of v–Cr–Mn–Ni spheroidal carbide cast irons

The objective of this investigation is to study the influence of vanadium（5.0wt%–10.0wt%） and chromium（0–9.0wt%） on the microstructure and hardness of Cr-v-Mn-Ni white cast irons with spheroidal vanadium carbides. The alloys＇ microstructural features are presented and discussed with regard to the distribution of phase elements. The structural constituents of the alloys are spheroidal vC, proeutectoid cementite, ledeburite eutectic, rosette-shaped carbide eutectic（based on M7C3）, pearlite, martensite, and austenite. Their combinations and area fraction（AF） ratios are reported to be influenced by the alloys＇ chemical composition. Spheroidized vC particles are found to be sites for the nucleation of carbide eutectics. Cr and v are shown to substitute each other in the vC and M7C3 carbides, respectively. Chromium alloying leads to the formation of a eutectic（γ-Fe ＋ М7С3）, preventing the appearance of proeutectoid cementite in the structure. vanadium and chromium are revealed to increase the total carbide fraction and the amount of austenite in the matrix. Cr is observed to play a key role in controlling the metallic matrix microstructure.

Direct-fed microbes: A tool for improving the utilization of low quality roughages in ruminants

For many years, ruminant nutritionists and microbiologists have been interested in manipulating the microbial ecosystem of the rumen to improve production efficiency of different ruminant species. Removal and restriction of antibiotics subtherapeutic uses from ruminant diets has amplified interest in improving nutrient utilization and animal performance and search for more safe alternatives. Some bacterial and fungal microorganisms as a direct-fed microbial（DFM） can be the most suitable solutions. Microorganisms that are commonly used in DFM for ruminants may be classified mainly as lactic acid producing bacteria（LAB）, lactic acid utilizing bacteria（LUB）, or other microorganism＇s species like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Bacillus, Propionibacterium, Megasphaera elsdenii and Prevotellabryantii, in addition to some fungal species of yeast such as Saccharomyces and Aspergillus. A definitive mode of action for bacterial or fungal DFM has not been established; although a variety of mechanisms have been suggested. Bacterial DFM potentially moderate rumen conditions, and improve weight gain and feed efficiency. Fungal DFM may reduce harmful oxygen from the rumen, prevent excess lactate production, increase feed digestibility, and alter rumen fermentation patterns. DFM may also compete with and inhibit the growth of pathogens, immune system modulation, and modulate microbial balance in the gastrointestinal tract. Improved dry matter intake, milk yield, fat corrected milk yield and milk fat content were obtained with DFM administration. However, the response to DFM is not constant; depending on dosages, feeding times and frequencies, and strains of DFM. Nonetheless, recent studies have supported the positive effects of DFM on ruminant performance.

Abdominal compartment syndrome(ACS)develops when organ failure arises secondary to an increase in intraabdominal *** abdominal pressure is determined by multiple factors such as blood pressure,abdominal compliance,and other factors that exert a constant pressure within the abdominal *** conditions in the critically ill may increase abdominal pressure compromising organ perfusion that may lead to renal and respiratory *** surgical and trauma patients,aggressive fluid resuscitation is the most commonly reported risk factor to develop *** conditions that have also been identified as risk factors are ascites,hemoperitoneum,bowel distention,and large *** patients with abdominal trauma possess a higher risk of developing intra-abdominal hypertension(IAH).Certain surgical interventions are reported to have a higher risk to develop IAH such as damage control surgery,abdominal aortic aneurysm repair,and liver transplantation among *** monitoring of organ function and intra-abdominal pressure(IAP)allows clinicians to diagnose ACS rapidly and intervene with target-specific management to reduce *** decompression followed by temporary abdominal closure should be considered in all patients with signs of organ *** is still a great need for more studies to determine the adequate timing for interventions to improve patient outcomes.

Prevalence and risk factors of acute-on-chronic liver failure in a single center from Argentina

AIMTo study the prevalence, characteristics, risk factors and mortality at 28 d of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). METHODSA total of 100 cirrhotic patients admitted to our hospital for more than one day were included during the period between June 2013 and December 2015. We used the European Association for the Study of the Liver-Chronic Liver Failure-Consortium diagnostic criteria for ACLF, considering it as the acute decompensation of cirrhosis associated with the presence of one or more organ failure. For the diagnosis of organic failure the Chronic Liver Failure-Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score was used. Our population was divided into patients with and without ACLF. Clinical characteristics, presence of precipitating events, potential risk factors for developing ACLF and causes of mortality were analyzed. Mortality at 28 d was evaluated. RESULTSTwenty-nine patients (29%) developed ACLF criteria. Alcoholism, detected in 58 patients (58%), was the major etiological agent of cirrhosis. Bacterial infections were recognized as a precipitating event in 41.3% of cases and gastrointestinal bleeding in 27.5%. No precipitating event was identifiable in 27.5% of patients with ACLF. Comparing patients with and without ACLF, statistically significant risk factors were: Child Pugh score 10.2 ± 2.1 vs 8.4 ± 1.6 (P ˂ 0.0001), MELD score 20.7 ± 8.5 vs 12.3 ± 4 (P ˂ 0.0001), presence of ascites 27 (93%) vs 43 (60.5%) (P = 0.001), leukocytosis 15300 ± 8033 per cubic millimeter vs 10770 ± 5601 per cubic millimeter (P ˂ 0.0001), and high plasma levels of C reactive protein values 50.9 ± 46.4 mg/L vs 28.6 ± 23.4 mg/L (P ˂ 0.0019). Mortality rate was 62% (18 patients) vs 5.6% (4 patients), respectively (P CONCLUSIONWe observed that the ACLF is a frequent entity in this group of patients and has a significantly higher mortality rate.

Currently, partial hepatectomy is the treatment of choice for a wide variety of liver and biliary conditions. Among the possible complications of partial hepatectomy, acute kidney injury(AKI) should be considered as an important cause of increased morbidity and postoperative mortality. Difficulties in the data analysis related to postoperative AKI after liver resections are mainly due to the multiplicity of factors to be considered in the surgical patients, moreover, there is no consensus of the exact definition of AKI after liver resection in the literature, which hampers comparison and analysis of the scarce data published on the subject. Despite this multiplicity of risk factors for postoperative AKI after partial hepatectomy, there are main factors that clearly contribute to its occurrence. First factor relates to large blood losses with renal hypoperfusion during the operation, second factor relates to the occurrence of post-hepatectomy liver failure with consequent distributive circulatory changes and hepatorenal syndrome. Eventually, patients can have more than one factor contributing to post-operative AKI, and frequently these combinations of acute insults can be aggravated by sepsis or exposure to nephrotoxic drugs.
