The International Symposium ‘Towards Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mountainous Regions＇, held in Chiang Mai from 7-9 March 2006 （hereafter referred to as ‘Mountain Symposium＇）, brought together a wealth of experience from mountain research and development in four continents. Some of its highlights are presented in this Special Issue. If one were to choose a ＇leitmotif that would best capture the present state of knowledge in mountain research, it would be recognizing heterogeneity, complexity, interdependency, and learning how to deal with it. We are in the middle of a learning process and it is important to remember Rod Lefroy＇s statement in the panel discussion of the Mountain Symposium：＂perfection is the enemy of progress＂（Lefroy 2006）.

Stretched polymers will lose their possible configurations if they are mixed with nanoparticles or touch a hard wall, which leads to a strong depletion attraction responsible for the enrichment of nanoparticles near substrates. Moreover, it is found that there exists a sacrifice mechanism in confined pure polymer samples or polymer-nanoparticle mixtures, that part of the polymers, in order to reach a minimum free energy for the total system, are adsorbed on hard walls even though they lose their conformation. The current study provides a simple yet effective approach for the design of thin polymer composites.

This contribution is a preliminary techno-economic assessment of a biogas-based oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) process. Biogas is frequently utilized as a renewable energy source within small scale combined heat and power plants or as a natural gas substitute. The activation of methane also enables its utilization as a feedstock to produce chemicals. In this sense, the OCM process allows for the direct conversion of methane into ethylene, which is a major building block for the chemical and polymer industries. Biogas resulting from the anaerobic digestion of vinasse, a liquid effluent from bioethanol industry, is treated for contaminant removal and its methane content is converted into ethylene, which is then purified as the main product. The biogas cleaning process is assessed based on literature data, while an experimentally validated simulation model is used to assess the OCM process. A techno-economic evaluation is then performed through a Monte Carlo simulation, wherein uncertain parameters take random values between reasonable bounds. The net present value results positive in 74% of the cases, indicating that the project is profitable under a wide range of scenarios. Some performance improvement opportunities have been identified and highlighted to guide future studies in the topic.

Endoscopic extraperitoneal radical prostatectomy （EERPE） is a well-established and standardized technique for treating patients with localized prostate cancer. Nevertheless, the procedure is continuously being refined with the expansion of anatomical knowledge. The development of a nerve-sparing approach and improvements in currently used equipment are expected to yield better results in cosmesis and convalescence without sacrificing the procedure＇s established benefits in terms of potency, continence and oncological management. In this study, the technique and its evolution are presented in detail, along with an analysis of its clinical efficacy. We also consult the literature to compare EERPE to transperitoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and we also discuss new technical advancements regarding the use of robotic assistance during EERPE.

Chromium shavings are wet by-products of the leather industry,of which thousands of tons accrue worldwide during leather *** to their chromium content,chromium shavings are responsible for the most important ecological challenges caused by the leather *** are stable towards temperatures of up to 110°C and enzymatic *** high stability is caused by the three-dimensional native structure,typical for collagen,and additional chemical cross-links between the collagen fibres achieved by Cr3+salts in the tanning ***,hitherto chromium shavings are not utilized industrially to produce *** order to generate biogas,this stable structure has to be *** shavings were pre-treated by extrusion and hydrothermal *** prove the enzymatic degradability,the different pre-treatments were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),enzymatic assays,and by measuring the solubility in *** biogas production potential was investigated using batch trials to examine *** demonstrated that both pretreatments allowed enzymatic attack and increased degradability of the chromium shavings reducing the lag-phase of biogas production and the remaining waste.

2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) was firstly treated with air ions generated by electric discharge, and high dechlorination (53%) was observed after 60 min treatment, indicating that air ions are an efficient dechlorination means and might have a future in the oxidative removal of chlorinated phenols. In addition, a stepwise degradation of TCP, beginning with the formation of a major product 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzenediol via substitution, is proposed through a detailed analysis of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Background:Microvascular invasion(MVI)can only be assessed on a full surgical *** aimed at evaluating,whether the histology of the primary tumor is predictive of MVI in a hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)***:Patients,who underwent liver resection or orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT)for recurrent HCC from January 2001 until June 2018 were eligible for this retrospective *** specimens were evaluated for HCC subtype/morphology,vessels encapsulating tumor clusters(VETC)-pattern and *** parameters were analyzed using χ^(2)-test andϕ-values,with P values<0.05 being considered ***:Of 230 HCC recurrences,37(16.1%)underwent repeated liver resection(n=22)or OLT(n=15).Of these,67.6%initially exceeded the Milan *** correlated Milan criteria(P=0.005),tumor size(P=0.015)and VETC-pattern(P=0.034)in the primary *** recurrences shared many features of the primary HCC such as tumor grade(P=0.002),VETC-pattern(P=0.035),and MVI(P=0.046).In recurrences,however,only the concordance with the Milan criteria correlated with MVI(P=0.018).No patient without MVI in the primary HCC revealed MVI on early recurrence(<2 years)(P=0.035).Conclusions:HCC recurrences share many biological features of the primary ***,early recurrences of MVI-negative HCC never revealed *** finding offers novel concepts,e.g.,patient selection for salvage OLT.

Influence of bladder neck suspension stitches on early continence after radical prostatectomy： a prospective randomized study of 180 patients

Several techniques have been introduced to improve early postoperative continence. In this study, we evaluated the impact of bladder neck （vesicourethral anastomosis） suspension on the outcome of extraperitoneal endoscopic radical prostatectomy （EERPE）. In this research, a total of 180 patients underwent EERPE. Group 1 included patients who underwent nerve-sparing EERPE （nsEERPE）（n=45）, and Group 2 included patients who underwent nsEERPE with bladder neck suspension （BNS, n=45）. Groups 3 （n=45） and 4 （n=45） included patients who received EERPE and EERPE with BNS, respectively. Patients were randomly assigned to receive BNS with their nsEERPE or EERPE procedure. Perioperative parameters were recorded, and continence was evaluated by determining the number and weight of absorbent pads （pad weighing test） on the second day after catheter removal and by a questionnaire 3 months postoperatively. Two days after catheter removal, 11.1% of Group 1, 11.1% of Group 2, 4.4% of Group 3 and 8.9% of Group 4 were conti nent. The average urine loss was 80.4, 70.1, 325.0 and 291.3 g for the each of these groups, respectively. At 3 months, 76.5% of Group I and 81.3% of Group 2 were continent. The continence figures for Group 3 and 4 were 48.5% and 43.8%, respectively. Similar overall rates were observed in all groups. In conclusion, although there are controversial reports in the literature, early continence was never observed to be significantly higher in the BNS groups when compared with the non-BNS groups, regardless of the EERPE technique performed.
